For a prompt that becomes an editable, playable browser game, Google Playground is the closest match. If you mean an explorable AI-generated world, Project Genie is the better comparison; if you want a game published within Roblox, use Roblox Build. Those are different outcomes, not interchangeable game makers.

Google announced Playground on October 7, 2026, as an early experiment. Its launch and access details can change, so check the linked official help pages before choosing a service.

Which alternative fits the kind of game you want?

Service What it makes Best fit Important trade-off
Google Project Genie Interactive worlds generated from text and images, which users can explore and remix. Trying out a generated environment or world experience. Experiences are limited to 60 seconds, and Google notes issues with controls, latency, prompt or image adherence, and real-world physics.
Google Playground Custom games created from text prompts, with options to edit, share, publish, and export. Making and revising a small browser game that you can take away as files. It is an early experiment, and game-creation access is being rolled out in tiers.
Roblox Build Playable, publishable games for Roblox. Creating for Roblox players and its platform. The result is Roblox-native, with specific creator, audience, and editing rules.
Unity Spark A planned Playground integration intended to support more advanced mechanics, high-fidelity 3D, and Unity runtime flexibility. Following a possible route from a generated concept toward a Unity-based experience. Google described it as in testing with a closed beta forthcoming; general availability is not established by the announcement.

Google Playground: closest to a prompt-to-game tool

Playground is the most direct fit if by “playable game” you mean a custom game made from a text idea, rather than an environment to walk through or a game confined to a separate platform. Google describes creating games from prompts and editing, sharing, or publishing them. Its help center says an export downloads a ZIP containing the game’s HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and generated assets. That gives you files to keep and inspect, rather than only a hosted experience.

Access and limitations

  • At launch, Google described Playground as available to adults in the United States. Catalog play is free, but creating games is being phased in.
  • The help center describes a limited free token allowance that refreshes weekly, with free-tier creation access rolling out in batches. Google One AI subscribers can unlock immediate creation access and higher limits; check the help center for current eligibility and terms.
  • Multiplayer is an early preview and is available only for selected genres, according to Google’s announcement.

Because Playground is an early experiment, treat its availability and limits as current-service details, not permanent guarantees.

Project Genie: for exploring generated worlds

Project Genie is an experimental research prototype for creating, exploring, and remixing interactive worlds with text and images. Google says the world is generated as the user moves through it. That makes it a useful alternative if your goal is to experience an AI-generated place, but not a like-for-like replacement for a tool focused on authoring an editable game.

What to expect

  • Google documents a 60-second experience limit.
  • Its announcement and help documentation describe imperfect prompt and image adherence, occasional control problems, latency, and results that may not follow real-world physics closely.
  • Current help documentation says access requires Google AI Ultra and age 18+. Consult Google’s Project Genie help page for current eligibility; the initial announcement described a U.S. rollout, but that launch detail should not be assumed to define present availability everywhere.

These constraints matter if you need a sustained game loop, reliable controls, or a world that closely follows a detailed brief. Google presents Genie as an experimental prototype, not a conventional game engine.

Roblox Build: choose it for Roblox publishing

Roblox Build is a better fit when the destination matters as much as the creation process. Roblox describes Build as a mobile-first, prompt-based tool for making playable, publishable Roblox games. A game made with it is intended for Roblox, rather than exported as a standalone browser project.

Rules to know before starting

  • Each Build game has one creator.
  • Build games default to a 16+ audience.
  • Editing a Build game in Roblox Studio converts that version into a standard Studio game and removes its Build status.
  • Roblox’s generative AI policy sets content standards and requires disclosures or maturity labels for certain interactive AI features. Review the current Roblox generative AI guidance alongside the Build documentation.

Choose Build if you want the Roblox ecosystem and accept its publishing and platform rules. Choose Playground if exporting browser-game files is more important than Roblox distribution.

Unity Spark: a possible next step, not a confirmed alternative yet

Google’s Playground announcement describes a planned integration with Unity Spark for more advanced mechanics, high-fidelity 3D, and Unity runtime flexibility. The same announcement says it is in testing, with a closed beta forthcoming. It does not establish that Unity Spark is generally available, so verify access before treating it as a usable option.

How to choose

  • Want to make, revise, and export a small browser game? Start with Playground, and check whether creation access is available to your account.
  • Want to explore a generated world? Consider Project Genie, with its short session length and experimental behavior in mind.
  • Want a Roblox game for Roblox players? Use Roblox Build and review its audience and generative-AI requirements.
  • Want a more advanced Unity workflow? Watch the Unity Spark integration, but confirm that you can actually access it before planning a project around it.

Sources and context

Product capabilities and access details above are based on official Google and Roblox materials available on October 7, 2026. Google Cloud and The Harris Poll reported that 97% of surveyed game developers said generative AI was reshaping the industry. That was a survey response—not a measured adoption rate or evidence that any one tool produces better games. The survey covered 615 developers in the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, conducted in late June and early July 2025. Read the survey report.
