For very long documents, the strongest documented alternatives are Google Gemini long-context models, Anthropic Claude variants with 1M-token windows, and Meta Llama 4 Scout with a 10M-token maximum context. Gemini and Claude are the simplest managed APIs. Llama 4 Scout is the most capable open-weight option when data control, customization, or an unusually large window justifies the hosting work. The right choice depends on effective context, retrieval accuracy, document modality, request limits, cost, latency, governance, and whether you really need to send the entire corpus at once.

Which model is best for an extremely long document?

There is no universal accuracy winner. For a managed workflow, start with Gemini if you need very large multimodal uploads, Google Cloud integration, or repeated processing that can benefit from context caching. Choose Claude when a managed API with a documented 1M-token context and a strong long-document or codebase workflow is the priority. Choose Llama 4 Scout when open weights, data residency, customization, or a 10M-token architectural maximum outweighs the cost of operating the model yourself.

A context-window number is only a capacity ceiling. The usable amount is lower after system instructions, tool state, conversation history, and the requested output are counted. Providers can also impose file-size, request-body, rate, concurrency, or plan limits before a nominal token maximum is reached. Test the exact model version and document types you will use rather than selecting by headline capacity alone.

Documented long-context options

Option Documented context Deployment Best fit Main caveat
Google Gemini long-context models Many models have 1 million or more tokens. Current Gemini documentation describes a unified 1M-token window for Gemini 4 Argon. Managed API and Google cloud ecosystem Large multimodal uploads, managed operations, and repeated workloads using caching Model version, pricing, request limits, and regional availability change; verify current terms.
Anthropic Claude 1M variants 1M tokens Managed API, with selected cloud channels announced by Anthropic Large document sets, codebases, and long-running analysis Large files can hit request-size limits before the token limit; access depends on model and plan.
Meta Llama 4 Scout 10M-token maximum context Open-weight download or partner/cloud hosting Data control, customization, self-hosting, and an extreme context ceiling Hardware, serving software, licensing, and real-world quality require your own validation.
Meta Llama 4 Maverick 1M-token maximum context Open-weight download or hosted inference Teams wanting Llama 4 deployment with a smaller documented window than Scout The 1M maximum is still not a guarantee of reliable retrieval or synthesis across every task.

Google AI for Developers says many Gemini models provide context windows of 1 million or more tokens and documents uploading large document sets plus context caching for repeated work. Anthropic’s context documentation states that its 1M-token variants use 1M as the default, without requiring a beta header, while its Claude Sonnet 4 announcement describes the same scale. Meta’s model documentation lists Scout at 10M tokens and Maverick at 1M; Scout is described as natively multimodal, with 17B active parameters across 16 experts and an efficiency target of running on a single H100 GPU. Those are published capabilities, not a promise that every deployment will deliver the same latency, throughput, or answer quality.

What “effective context” means in practice

The advertised maximum is the largest accepted token sequence under specified conditions. Effective context is what remains usable for your task after all other request components are included. A request containing a long system prompt, tool definitions, several prior turns, and a large answer budget may have substantially less room for source documents.

Check the full request budget

  • Measure the tokens in the system and developer instructions.
  • Count conversation history, tool schemas, metadata, and any retrieved passages.
  • Reserve output tokens for the answer, citations, structured data, or code.
  • Account for provider-specific file wrappers and multimodal representations; a PDF upload is not always counted in the same way as pasted text.
  • Leave headroom for retries and documents that tokenize more densely than expected.

Do not assume that a document fitting numerically will be economical or fast. A full-corpus request can move a large input on every call, increase time to first token, and make a single missed instruction expensive to diagnose.

How the three leading choices differ

Google Gemini: managed scale and multimodal ingestion

Gemini is the most straightforward starting point when you want a hosted API for very large text, PDF, image, or other multimodal inputs. Google documents context windows of 1 million or more tokens across many models and describes uploading large document sets directly. Its context-caching path is particularly relevant when the same reference corpus is queried repeatedly: cache the stable input and send only the changing question where the supported model and pricing rules permit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini’s practical constraints still matter. Confirm the exact model’s context size, maximum file and request body, output limit, supported regions, retention terms, and current input, output, and cached-token prices. A model that accepts a large PDF may interpret selectable text, scanned pages, charts, and complex tables with different reliability. For recurring legal, financial, or technical analysis, test each modality separately.

Anthropic Claude: a managed 1M-token workflow

Claude variants with a documented 1M-token context suit teams that prefer a managed API and need to reason over large document collections or codebases. Anthropic’s documentation explicitly says 1M is the default context for models that support it. That removes an activation step, but it does not remove operational limits.

Anthropic warns that large files can encounter request-size limits before the nominal token limit. Check the maximum body size and upload method for your selected model and plan. If a corpus fails at the transport layer, reduce file size, split the material into logical batches, or use retrieval rather than repeatedly retrying an oversized request. Validate quote fidelity, cross-document references, and contradiction handling on your own representative set.

Meta Llama 4 Scout: open weights and a 10M ceiling

Scout is the strongest documented open-weight option in this comparison for maximum context. Meta lists a 10M-token maximum and native multimodal input, and describes a design aimed at single-H100 efficiency. Open weights can support private deployment, custom safety controls, data-residency requirements, and fine-tuned or otherwise customized serving.

Those benefits transfer operational responsibility to you. Budget for GPUs or an inference provider, memory and storage, quantization decisions, batching, observability, upgrades, security patches, and model-license review. “Single H100 efficiency” is a design description, not a guarantee that your chosen precision, sequence length, concurrency, and latency target will fit on one card. A 10M-token maximum may also be unnecessary if your workload can be solved with retrieval at a fraction of the cost.

When a retrieval pipeline is better than full-context prompting

RAG, chunking, and staged summarization remain useful even when a model accepts millions of tokens. Use them when only a subset of a corpus is relevant, when the corpus is continually changing, or when sending everything on every request is too slow or expensive. Google explicitly discusses RAG’s historical role alongside long context and describes caching for repeated high-input workloads.

Use full context when

  • The question depends on relationships spread across the entire document set.
  • You need a holistic review, such as tracing a policy change through all sections.
  • The corpus is stable and comfortably fits the effective request budget.
  • You can tolerate the latency and have tested retrieval and synthesis quality at the target length.

Use RAG or staged processing when

  • Only a small fraction of the corpus is relevant to most questions.
  • Documents exceed practical request or file-size limits.
  • Users need low latency, high concurrency, or predictable per-query cost.
  • You need source-level access controls, document freshness, or auditable passage citations.

A practical hybrid design

  1. Ingest and normalize files, preserving page, section, table, and figure identifiers.
  2. Extract text and images with a parser that handles scanned pages and run OCR where needed.
  3. Create retrieval units that keep headings, captions, footnotes, and nearby definitions together; avoid splitting a table from its column labels.
  4. Retrieve a broad candidate set for the question, then rerank it using semantic and lexical signals.
  5. Place the selected passages in a long-context request and require the model to cite the supplied section or page identifiers.
  6. For questions that require global coverage, summarize batches first, then ask a second pass to reconcile those summaries against the original evidence.
  7. Cache stable instructions or reference material when the provider supports it, and monitor cache-hit behavior rather than assuming every repeat is discounted.

How to evaluate long-document accuracy

Benchmarking only the maximum window is misleading. Build a test set from the documents your users actually submit and score the tasks that matter.

Retrieval and location tests

  • Needle retrieval: place a precise fact, exception, or definition at different positions and ask for an exact quotation.
  • Distributed evidence: require an answer that combines facts from distant chapters or files.
  • Table extraction: ask for row and column values while checking units, footnotes, and merged cells.
  • Negative evidence: include documents that do not contain the requested fact and test whether the model says it is absent.

Reasoning and reliability tests

  • Give conflicting versions of a policy and ask the model to identify which is newer using dates supplied in the documents.
  • Ask for a calculation whose inputs appear in separate sections, then verify every intermediate value.
  • Request citations and compare each quotation with the source, including punctuation and qualifiers.
  • Repeat the same prompt at several corpus sizes to detect degradation, lost-in-the-middle behavior, or rising refusal and hallucination rates.

Google DeepMind reported near-perfect retrieval above 99% in its tested Gemini 1.5 long-context experiments. That is a vendor-reported result for the evaluated setup, not a universal guarantee for current Gemini versions, different document types, or your prompts. Independent evaluations should always name the exact model version, context length, task, scoring method, and date.

Cost, latency, and capacity planning

Compare total workload cost rather than a single input-token price. Include input, output, cached-input, embedding or reranking, storage, network transfer, retries, and support charges. For self-hosted Llama, include GPU rental or depreciation, electricity, orchestration, monitoring, engineering time, and idle capacity.

Cost or performance factor Questions to answer
Input volume How many tokens or files are sent per request, and can repeated material be cached?
Output volume How long are answers, citations, tables, or generated reports?
Latency What is time to first token and total completion time at your target context and concurrency?
Throughput How many simultaneous users or batch jobs must the system handle?
Failure handling What happens when a request exceeds file, body, rate, or output limits?
Infrastructure For open weights, what hardware, precision, memory, serving stack, and regional capacity are required?

Provider prices, quotas, model names, and cloud availability are volatile. Record the region, plan, date, and exact model when you calculate a forecast, then recheck those terms before committing to production.

Security, privacy, and governance choices

A managed API reduces infrastructure work but requires a review of data processing, retention, training use, regional routing, encryption, administrator access, and contractual controls. Ask whether uploaded files are retained, how deletion works, and whether enterprise controls differ from public endpoints.

Self-hosting Scout can keep documents inside your network and let you apply your own logging and access policy, but the model server, storage, monitoring system, and update pipeline become part of your security boundary. Open weights do not eliminate licensing obligations or the need for abuse and prompt-injection defenses.

  • Apply document-level authorization before retrieval or upload.
  • Strip secrets and unnecessary personal data before inference when feasible.
  • Treat instructions inside documents as untrusted content; separate them from system instructions.
  • Log document identifiers, model version, prompt template, and evidence passages for auditability without storing sensitive text unnecessarily.
  • Define a human-review path for legal, medical, financial, employment, or safety-critical conclusions.

Common failure modes and fixes

The upload is rejected before inference

The file or request body may exceed a provider limit even though the token count appears below the context maximum. Compress or convert the file, split it at semantic boundaries, use the provider’s file-upload mechanism, or switch to retrieval.

The answer ignores material in the middle

Long prompts can exhibit position-sensitive retrieval. Reorder evidence, add section-level indexes, retrieve relevant passages into a shorter working set, and test the same fact at the beginning, middle, and end of the corpus.

Quotes look plausible but are wrong

Require verbatim quotations with page or section identifiers, then run an automated comparison against the source. For high-stakes use, have a reviewer verify every cited passage.

Tables and scans are unreliable

Use a document pipeline that preserves layout and OCR confidence, provide the relevant page image when supported, and test charts, footnotes, merged cells, and rotated scans independently from ordinary prose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Latency or spend is unacceptable

Reduce repeated input with caching, retrieve only relevant sections, summarize in stages, lower unnecessary output budgets, batch offline jobs, or move to a self-hosted model only after measuring its total operating cost.

A decision checklist

  1. Define the largest real corpus, modalities, response format, latency target, concurrency, and data-residency requirement.
  2. Measure the tokenized size and file sizes, including system prompts and output reservations.
  3. Run the same evaluation set on Gemini, Claude, and Llama 4 Scout at the context lengths you expect to use.
  4. Score retrieval, cross-section synthesis, tables, citations, contradiction handling, refusals, and abstention—not just fluent prose.
  5. Model managed API costs, caching, retries, and quotas alongside self-hosted hardware and operations.
  6. Choose full-context, hybrid RAG, or staged processing per workload instead of forcing one architecture on every document.
  7. Revalidate model limits, prices, access tiers, and cloud regions whenever you change versions or sign a production contract.

Bottom line

Gemini is the pragmatic managed starting point for very large and multimodal document workloads, especially when repeated queries can use context caching. Claude is a strong managed alternative with a documented 1M-token context, subject to request-size limits. Llama 4 Scout offers the largest documented window—10M tokens—and the most deployment control, but demands substantially more infrastructure and evaluation. In all three cases, a carefully tested RAG or staged pipeline can be more accurate, faster, cheaper, and easier to govern than submitting an entire corpus on every request.
