The best alternative depends on what you need next. Use a hosted online distributor for a permanent viewing home, a specialist web-series festival for awards and credibility, a curated showcase for discovery, or an industry-facing episodic program for meetings with buyers and funders. You can combine these routes, but protect premiere eligibility and your rights before making any episode public.
Choose the route by your primary outcome
A web series does not need to follow the traditional film-festival path. Episodic work can build an audience online, earn recognition in web-native competitions, appear in curated digital showcases, or reach distributors through an industry market. Each route solves a different problem, so decide what success means before you submit.

VersusMedia
VersusMedia accepts independent films, short films and web series. A creator can open a free account and upload work for review. Approved titles may appear on the service’s web experience and its iOS, Android, Roku and Apple TV applications. This route is strongest when you need a persistent place where people can watch the series after a festival window ends.

Treat approval as a gate, not a guarantee of a large audience. Prepare a complete series package—episode files, synopsis, stills, captions, credits and rights information—so the review team can assess it without chasing missing materials. Ask how the service handles episode ordering, thumbnails, captions, takedowns, analytics and territorial availability before you commit.
RTV’s online edition
RTV describes an online edition with free direct entry. Its stated arrangement lets creators keep videos on the original platform while granting RTV permission to display submitted materials. That can reduce the disruption of moving an established channel, but the permission language matters: confirm whether the grant is non-exclusive, how long it lasts, where the material can be shown and whether RTV can use clips or artwork in promotion.
RTV’s current edition, audience reach and rights wording should be verified at the time you submit. A free entry is not the same as free distribution, and retaining a video on your original platform does not automatically preserve every right you may need for future licensing.
When hosted distribution is the right choice
- You want viewers to find the complete series months after a premiere.
- You need playback on televisions and mobile devices without building your own apps.
- Your episodes are already public or you do not need an exclusive premiere.
- You can accept a platform review and its display or hosting terms.
Use a hosted service alongside, not instead of, your owned channel when possible. Keep a master archive, your own mailing list and a direct link hub so a platform change does not erase your audience relationship.
Specialist web-series festivals and competitions
Web-native events understand formats that conventional festivals may overlook: short episodes, vertical video, social-first storytelling, pilots and seasons released over time. They can supply recognition and feedback without requiring a feature-length film. Read each cycle’s rules carefully; eligibility, fees, dates and rights can change.
Hollywood Series
Hollywood Series is an online web festival aimed at OTT and digital creators. Its eligible formats include long- and short-form series, web documentaries, TikToks, Instagram Reels, vlogs, pilots, podcasts and other web series. It says it is connected to a global network of more than 50 international web festivals (2026 statement).
The broad format list is useful if your project does not fit a conventional episodic definition. Before entering, determine which category best describes the work, whether the judges evaluate a pilot or a full season, and what a selection provides beyond a digital badge. A network claim is most valuable when you can identify the actual partner events, territories and introductions available to selected creators.

Web Series Festival Global
Web Series Festival Global accepts online content from YouTube and Facebook as well as episodes hosted on digital platforms. It presents itself as an IMDb-recognized opportunity for exposure and connections with audiences and industry professionals. That positioning may help a creator who needs a web-specific credential, but recognition should be treated as one signal rather than proof of distribution or sales.
Submit a clean screener that makes the series easy to evaluate: start with the strongest eligible episode, include season order and running times, and provide a concise statement explaining the intended audience. Check whether the event requires a premiere, limits public availability or asks for permission to use your trailer and stills.
WRPN.tv Global Webisode Competition
The WRPN.tv Global Webisode Competition (WGWC) accepts webisodes and television series. Its 2025 competition page advertises creator feedback, optional screening on WRPN.tv and stated distribution reach in more than 70 countries. The same page cites 13 years of dedication to web-series creators.
These benefits are separate decisions. Feedback can be worthwhile even when you do not want a public screening; optional screening can add exposure but may affect later exclusivity. Treat the 70-plus-country figure as the organizer’s stated reach, not a guaranteed audience for every title. Fees, deadlines and screening terms are cycle-specific, so confirm them for the year you enter.

REALIST
REALIST combines an international web-series festival with a business-to-business program. Its site says competition entries are watched and voted on through the Chill vertical app and online platform. That audience interaction layer may suit creators who want viewers to participate rather than simply watch a private jury screener.
Ask how voting is moderated, whether public votes influence awards, what data participants receive and whether the B2B program includes scheduled meetings or only general networking. If the series deals with sensitive subjects, confirm what portions become public and whether you can restrict territories.
How to judge whether a web-series festival is worth entering
- Audience match: Look for comparable titles, language and genre, not just an international label.
- Outcome clarity: Identify the concrete benefit—jury feedback, a screening, a credential, press or meetings.
- Rights: Read hosting, clip-use, sublicensing and archival clauses.
- Proof of activity: Check recent winners, screening pages and whether selected work remains findable.
- Total cost: Count entry fees, captions, deliverables, travel and staff time.
A selection is useful when it moves the series toward your chosen outcome. Entering many events without a rights and audience strategy can consume a budget while producing little sustained viewership.

Curated online showcases for discovery
FestFlix.tv
FestFlix.tv describes online showcases designed to keep audiences engaged year-round. It promotes participating work through festival channels, social media, email marketing and filmmaker outreach. This model is different from a one-week premiere: the value lies in a programmed context and repeated discovery opportunities.
Ask for the exact showcase dates, replay period, placement of your title, promotional deliverables and any audience data. Confirm whether the organizer may host a copy or simply link to your channel. If you are planning a later distributor submission, check whether the showcase counts as public availability under that distributor’s rules.
When a curated showcase beats a competition
Choose a showcase when the series needs context and discoverability more than a judging result. A curator’s introduction can explain an unusual format, connect episodes into a season and place the project beside work with a similar audience. It is particularly useful after a controlled premiere, when you want a second wave of attention without claiming another award.
Industry-facing episodic programs
Tribeca NOW and the Tribeca Creators Market
Tribeca NOW explicitly accepts episodic projects, including web series. Selected submitters may also be considered for the Tribeca Creators Market, which brings emerging storytellers together with distributors, producers, networks, funders and other industry members. This is the clearest option in the list when your priority is a development, financing or distribution conversation rather than a public screening alone.
Prepare for an industry audience differently from a festival jury. Have a one-sentence logline, season synopsis, episode guide, creator statement, audience evidence, budget range, rights position and a specific ask. If the project is seeking a second season, state what has already been produced and what remains to finance.
Tribeca announced in December 2025 that Tribeca NOW would formally include social-media creators. Tribeca Festival Director Cara Cusumano described the expansion this way: “Tribeca’s interdisciplinary programming has always celebrated the best in cinematic storytelling across all platforms, injecting fresh creative voices into the independent ecosystem wherever they are found.” The change signals a broader definition of episodic storytelling, but it does not remove the need to read the current submission rules.
Sundance’s episodic category
Sundance is a mainstream festival route rather than a pure alternative, but it can matter for a high-profile series. Its rules include pilots, multi-episode series and web series with a total running time of 60 minutes or less. The rules also impose strict limits on public availability.

Do not publish a qualifying screener publicly until you have checked the current Sundance rules. “Total running time” can affect whether you submit one pilot, several episodes or an edited package. Preserve a private screener and document every public release date so you can answer eligibility questions accurately.
Premiere, availability and rights: the checks that prevent expensive mistakes
Premiere status
Some programs reject work that is already available on streaming services or online platforms. Others accept public episodes but reserve premiere labels for unreleased work. Make a release calendar with separate dates for private links, password-protected screeners, public episodes, social clips and showcase pages. Ask each organizer whether an unlisted or password-protected video counts as public.
Rights grants and exclusivity
Look for permission to host, display, promote, archive or sublicense. A clause allowing display of “submitted materials” may include episodes, trailers, posters and stills. Confirm whether the grant is exclusive, the territory, the term, the ability to withdraw and what happens to copies after the event. If music, archive footage, performers or locations have limited licenses, make sure the proposed territory and term fit those contracts.
Audience and geography
The New Zealand Film Commission recommends researching a festival’s audience and track record rather than submitting indiscriminately. Apply that test to every online opportunity: identify the dominant language, genre interests, time zone, age profile and territory restrictions. A smaller event with the right audience can outperform a global-sounding program that offers no meaningful path to viewers.
Cost and effort
Do not compare entry fees alone. Build a submission budget that includes caption creation, translations, poster design, screeners, platform delivery, legal review, travel and staff hours. The available information does not establish standard fees for these programs; treat every amount as cycle-specific and verify it on the current submission page.
A practical release plan that combines alternatives
A staged plan lets you preserve options while building an audience. Adjust the sequence if a particular program requires a premiere or prohibits public release.
- Package the series. Export high-quality masters, caption files, transcripts, episode stills, a trailer, credits, a season synopsis and a rights log. Keep a private screener separate from any public channel.
- Map eligibility. List the current rules for one industry-facing program, one or two specialist web-series events and any showcase you are considering. Record deadlines, total running-time limits, premiere language, territory restrictions and rights grants.
- Submit while eligibility is intact. Use the controlled screener for Tribeca NOW, Sundance or another program with public-availability limits. Do not release the episodes publicly until the relevant decision window closes or the rules confirm that release is allowed.
- Enter selectively. Choose one or two specialist programs whose audience and format fit the series. Submit the strongest complete package rather than every available category.
- Release deliberately. Once premiere obligations are satisfied, publish through your owned channel or a hosted service such as VersusMedia. Keep episode metadata consistent so search engines and viewers can follow the season.
- Add curated discovery. Use an online showcase such as FestFlix.tv for a second wave of attention. Coordinate the showcase dates with your own release calendar and newsletter.
- Measure the result. Track completed episodes, subscriber or mailing-list growth, territory, referral source, inquiries and introductions. A program that produces no audience, credential or conversation may not merit a repeat entry.
Submission checklist for an independent web series
- Confirm that every episode is cleared for the requested territory and term.
- Check whether the program wants a pilot, a full season, selected episodes or a total-runtime package.
- Verify caption, subtitle, aspect-ratio, frame-rate and file-size requirements.
- Prepare a private screener URL with a stable password and an expiration date you control.
- Write a logline that identifies the protagonist, conflict and episodic hook in one sentence.
- Include episode numbers, titles and running times so reviewers can understand the season structure.
- State whether the series is public, unlisted, password-protected or unreleased.
- Read permissions for hosting, display, clips, stills, press, voting and sublicensing.
- Record the deadline, fee, time zone, notification date and withdrawal policy.
- Save a PDF or screenshot of the rules that applied when you submitted.
Common failure modes and fixes
Publishing too early
Symptom: A program later says the series is ineligible because episodes were public. Fix: Keep an access-controlled screener, ask for a written interpretation of “public,” and delay open release until the decision window closes.

Chasing badges without an audience plan
Symptom: The project accumulates selections but viewers cannot find the episodes. Fix: Reserve budget for a stable viewing home, an email list and coordinated promotion; select events that provide replay pages or measurable referrals.
Granting broader rights than intended
Symptom: An organizer requests permission that conflicts with a music, cast or distributor agreement. Fix: Limit the territory, term and materials to what you can legally provide, and remove an entry if the organizer will not clarify the clause.
Submitting the wrong cut
Symptom: Reviewers see an episode that starts slowly or a package that exceeds a runtime cap. Fix: Label the pilot and season versions clearly, check arithmetic on total running time, and use the strongest eligible opening.

Symptom: A large stated reach produces no useful viewers or contacts. Fix: Compare language, genre, geography, comparable titles and the event’s recent track record before paying or surrendering rights.
Decision framework
Choose a hosted service first if your immediate need is reliable access to the full season. Choose a specialist competition if independent validation or structured feedback is the priority. Choose a curated showcase when you need a programmed discovery moment after release. Choose an industry-facing episodic program when the next milestone is financing, representation or distribution.
For many creators, the strongest sequence is controlled industry submissions, one or two well-matched web-series competitions, a public release on an owned or hosted channel, and a curated showcase that extends discovery. Recheck every program’s deadline, public-release rule, rights grant and geographic availability immediately before submitting; those details determine whether an opportunity expands your options or quietly removes them.
