The best alternative depends on the work you do most: choose Ryobi 40V or Greenworks 60V for a homeowner-focused outdoor range, DeWalt 20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT or Milwaukee M18 for mixed trade and outdoor work, and Makita 18V LXT or 40V XGT when you are already invested in Makita’s professional ecosystem. Keep EGO, FLEX or SKIL if their battery architecture and tool range fit your priorities better.
The battery and charger are usually the long-term switching cost. A bare tool may look inexpensive, but a new platform can also require batteries, a charger, storage and replacement accessories. Compare the complete ecosystem—not just one mower, drill or saw—before committing.
What is the best alternative to EGO/FLEX/SKIL?
There is no defensible universal winner across every mower, drill, blower, saw and specialty tool. No single independent score covering all three reference brands and every alternative was available; Consumer Reports’ platform coverage, updated July 23, 2026, discusses comparative testing but does not provide a complete cross-brand score table. The useful answer is a platform-fit decision:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Ryobi 40V: the strongest starting point for many homeowners who want a broad outdoor catalog and frequent retail availability.
- Greenworks 60V: an outdoor-first option worth comparing when its local mower, snow-tool and service range is stronger than the alternatives.
- DeWalt 20V MAX and 60V FLEXVOLT: a good mixed-use candidate for construction hand tools plus higher-power outdoor equipment, particularly if you already own DeWalt batteries.
- Milwaukee M18: a trade-oriented choice with a deep professional hand-tool catalog and compatible outdoor products in the same broad ecosystem.
- Makita 18V LXT or 40V XGT: a professional-ergonomics choice, provided you understand that LXT and XGT are separate battery families unless a specific tool says otherwise.
EGO remains compelling when high-power outdoor equipment and one 56V battery family matter most. FLEX remains a logical professional-trade platform, while SKIL can make sense for lower-cost DIY work, USB-C charging convenience and a compact outdoor range.

Why the battery platform matters more than one tool
Interchangeable batteries reduce the number of chargers and spare packs you need, let a charged pack move between jobs, and make the next tool purchase less expensive when you buy a bare tool. Consumer Reports uses this platform logic in its cordless-tool coverage: a shared battery system can save money and keep charged batteries interchangeable. The trade-off is that leaving a platform later means replacing more than the original tool.
The switching-cost calculation
Before comparing brands, list the equipment you expect to buy over the next several years. Include the main tool, a second battery for longer jobs, a charger, storage and consumables such as mower blades, trimmer line or chains. Then compare the price of a complete starter kit rather than the lowest bare-tool price.
- One-tool owner: buying the best complete kit for that single task may matter more than a large ecosystem.
- Growing homeowner collection: choose the platform with the exact mower, trimmer, blower, chainsaw and snow tool you are likely to need.
- Trade user: prioritize the hand-tool catalog, battery availability, charger speed, service network and compatibility with your existing packs.
The three reference ecosystems
EGO POWER+ 56V
EGO positions its Power+, Professional and Pro X ranges around the same 56V ARC Lithium battery family. EGO’s technology information says, "Our industry-leading 56V ARC Lithium™ battery works with all EGO POWER+ tools." That single high-voltage family is attractive for demanding outdoor equipment, where snow blowers, large mowers and other high-load tools benefit from higher-voltage battery architecture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose EGO when your priority is a coordinated outdoor lineup and you want to stay inside one 56V family. Check the exact battery size, charger and included accessories for each model; a statement that packs fit the platform does not establish identical runtime or weight for every tool.
FLEX 24V
FLEX describes its system as a 24V Lithium platform with cross-compatible tools, batteries and chargers. Its official platform wording says, "FLEX Stacked Lithium battery technology delivers power that changes everything – and it’s 100% cross-compatible with all FLEX 24V tools and chargers." FLEX also advertises a five-year limited warranty when its registration requirements are met.
FLEX is most naturally compared with professional trade ecosystems. Verify the registration deadline, proof-of-purchase rules and the service arrangements in your market before treating the advertised warranty as a guaranteed term for your purchase.
SKIL PWRCORE 12, 20 and 40
SKIL separates its cordless products into PWRCORE 12, PWRCORE 20 and PWRCORE 40. SKIL states that every battery powers tools within the same PWRCORE system. PWRCORE 12 and PWRCORE 20 support two-way USB-C charging, while PWRCORE 40 is aimed at lawn and garden work.
These are separate voltage families, not one universal SKIL battery. A PWRCORE 20 pack should not be assumed to fit a PWRCORE 40 tool. Confirm the system name on both the tool and battery before ordering.

Alternative battery platforms compared
| Platform | Primary fit | Battery architecture | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryobi 40V | Homeowner outdoor equipment and a broad, readily available range | 40V outdoor family; exact pack capacity and charger vary by kit | Exact mower, trimmer, blower or chainsaw model, current local price and battery included |
| DeWalt 20V MAX / 60V FLEXVOLT | Mixed construction hand tools and higher-power outdoor equipment | Separate 20V MAX and 60V FLEXVOLT product families with model-specific compatibility | Whether the tool accepts 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT or both, plus the required battery |
| Milwaukee M18 | Professional hand tools with a growing cordless outdoor range | M18 battery family; outdoor products can require particular pack sizes | Specific M18 outdoor model, recommended battery and local service support |
| Makita 18V LXT / 40V XGT | Professional users who value ergonomics and a large catalog | LXT and XGT are separate families unless a tool explicitly states compatibility | Whether your existing packs are LXT or XGT and which family the new tool requires |
| Greenworks 60V | Outdoor-first use, including lawn and seasonal equipment where available | 60V outdoor family; model and regional availability vary | Mower and snow-tool breadth, battery supply, parts and local service |
Voltage is only one comparison point. Battery capacity, motor design, load, cutting width, operating mode and weather all affect runtime, so a voltage label cannot substitute for a model-specific test.
Ryobi 40V: the practical homeowner alternative
Ryobi 40V is the best first platform to investigate when you want one outdoor battery family and expect to buy several lawn tools. Its appeal is breadth and availability rather than a claim that every Ryobi product outperforms EGO, FLEX or SKIL. A homeowner can evaluate a mower, string trimmer, blower, chainsaw and other outdoor tools as one purchasing plan.
When Ryobi fits
- You want a broad outdoor range from one brand.
- You value frequent availability through local retailers and replacement-battery access.
- Your work is mainly mowing, trimming, blowing and occasional cutting rather than daily professional construction.
- You prefer to add bare tools after buying a starter kit.
Checks before buying
Compare the exact cutting width, self-propelled configuration, included battery capacity, charger type, warranty terms and replacement-pack price. A Ryobi 40V battery is not interchangeable with Ryobi’s lower-voltage tool families, and a 40V label does not prove that two tools include the same charger or deliver the same runtime.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Greenworks 60V: outdoor-first competition for EGO
Greenworks 60V deserves a direct comparison with EGO when your collection will remain focused on outdoor equipment. Assess the mower deck and drive system, blower and trimmer lineup, chainsaw options, snow-tool availability where relevant, and the ability to obtain batteries and service locally.
The important decision is not whether 60V is automatically better than EGO’s 56V. Those nominal figures do not predict a complete tool’s performance, runtime or ergonomics. Choose the platform with the specific equipment, battery sizes, controls and support that suit your property.
DeWalt: one ecosystem for trade tools and outdoor power
DeWalt is a strong candidate if your collection includes drills, impact drivers, saws and other construction tools as well as outdoor equipment. The platform spans 20V MAX products and higher-power 60V FLEXVOLT products, but those labels must be checked at the model level.
20V MAX and FLEXVOLT compatibility
Do not assume that every DeWalt battery fits every DeWalt tool. Read the tool’s battery specification and the pack’s compatibility information. A FLEXVOLT battery may support particular 20V MAX tools while also operating in selected 60V tools, but the exact model determines whether that cross-use is allowed.
When DeWalt is preferable
- You already own several DeWalt batteries and chargers.
- Your core work is construction or maintenance, with outdoor tools as a secondary requirement.
- You need access to higher-power outdoor equipment without creating a completely separate brand collection.
Compare the complete kit: a high-power outdoor tool may need a larger or additional battery, and the battery can be the most expensive part of the purchase.

Milwaukee M18: trade depth with outdoor capability
Milwaukee M18 is a natural alternative for trade users who prioritize a deep professional hand-tool catalog and want cordless outdoor products in the same broad ecosystem. It is not automatically the best outdoor platform for every homeowner; the exact mower, trimmer, blower or saw and its required battery should drive the decision.
Milwaukee’s M18 name identifies the family, not a promise that all packs provide identical runtime or balance. Check the recommended battery for the specific outdoor tool, especially if you are comparing a compact pack with a high-capacity pack. Weight with the battery installed can materially change handling even when the tool’s headline voltage is the same.
Makita 18V LXT and 40V XGT: choose the family deliberately
Makita is a candidate for users who value professional ergonomics and a large catalog. The key distinction is architectural: 18V LXT and 40V XGT are separate battery families unless a specific tool explicitly states otherwise.
Choose LXT when
- Your existing Makita collection is 18V LXT.
- You want the broadest continuity with your current chargers and packs.
- Your tools do not require the higher-power XGT range.
Choose XGT when
- You are starting a new high-power collection or already own XGT equipment.
- The exact outdoor tool you need is offered in XGT and its performance, controls or runtime justify a separate family.
Do not buy an XGT tool expecting it to accept an LXT pack. Check the family marking on every tool, battery and charger before purchasing.
Which cordless tool battery platform should I buy?
Use this sequence to turn the broad choice into a platform decision.
- Write down your next five tools. Include the mower, trimmer, blower, drill, saw or specialty tool you realistically expect to buy, not every product a catalog advertises.
- Separate outdoor from trade work. Outdoor-only collections usually favor Ryobi 40V, Greenworks 60V or EGO 56V; mixed construction and outdoor work points toward DeWalt or Milwaukee, while Makita suits users committed to its professional families.
- Check the exact models. Confirm that the platform has the required tool in your region, with the cutting width, capacity, attachments and controls you need.
- Compare complete kits. Record the kit price, included battery, charger, second-battery cost and consumables. Do not compare a bare tool with a kit from another brand.
- Evaluate handling. Compare tool weight with the battery installed, balance, controls, noise and storage. Manufacturer voltage does not tell you how comfortable a mower or saw will feel.
- Verify support. Check warranty registration, repair locations, parts availability and expected battery supply in your country.
- Buy the platform only after compatibility is clear. Keep screenshots or model numbers for the tool, battery and charger specifications so a later purchase does not introduce the wrong family.
Are Ryobi or DeWalt better than EGO?
Neither is categorically better. Ryobi is usually the more natural comparison when a homeowner wants a wide outdoor range and accessible tools. DeWalt is the stronger fit when construction hand tools are equally important and the 20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT ecosystem can cover both work types. EGO remains a serious choice when a dedicated 56V outdoor family, high-power equipment and a coordinated outdoor lineup are the priority.
Make the comparison model to model. A mower’s deck, drive system, battery capacity, charger and included accessories matter more than a brand-level slogan, and runtime should not be inferred without a test under comparable conditions.

Can one battery run all my tools?
Only within the compatible battery family and only where the tool is designed for that pack. EGO states that its 56V ARC Lithium battery works with all EGO POWER+ tools. FLEX states that its 24V batteries and chargers are cross-compatible across FLEX 24V tools. SKIL compatibility is organized inside each separate PWRCORE 12, PWRCORE 20 or PWRCORE 40 system.

Across brands, assume the answer is no. Across voltage families within one brand, also assume the answer is no unless the product page explicitly confirms compatibility. DeWalt 20V MAX and 60V FLEXVOLT, and Makita 18V LXT and 40V XGT, require particular attention to the tool and battery specification.
Power, runtime and charging: what the labels do—and do not—tell you
Voltage and load
Higher-voltage systems are generally aimed at more power-hungry tools; Consumer Reports uses snow blowers as an example of equipment that commonly benefits from higher-voltage batteries. That does not make voltage a complete performance ranking. Motor efficiency, tool design, battery capacity and the material being cut or moved all affect results.
Capacity and runtime
Match battery capacity to the load and the job duration. A compact pack may reduce weight for a drill or trimmer, while a larger pack can extend a mower or snow-tool session but add weight. Do not publish or rely on a universal runtime number without a model-specific test that states the conditions.

Charging logistics
Count chargers as part of the platform. A second battery is useful only if it can be charged in time for the next task. Compare charger speed, the number of packs you expect to cycle, USB-C capability where offered, and whether the charger is included in the starter kit.
Total cost of ownership
A realistic platform budget has at least four lines: starter kit, second battery, charger capacity and consumables. Add replacement blades, trimmer line, chains and storage when those items are part of your normal work. Accessory compatibility is model-specific, so verify the part number rather than buying solely from a brand name.
| Cost item | Question to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Starter kit | Does it include the battery and charger required for the tool? | A low bare-tool price can hide a high entry cost. |
| Second battery | What capacity is needed for the next job? | Extra runtime may cost more than the tool itself. |
| Charging | How quickly can the pack be ready, and how many chargers are needed? | Slow or limited charging can stop a multi-tool workflow. |
| Consumables | Are blades, line, chains and other parts easy to source locally? | Availability affects downtime and long-term ownership. |
| Service | Where are warranty repairs and replacement parts handled? | A strong tool is less useful if support is inaccessible. |
Common compatibility mistakes and fixes
Mistake: buying by brand instead of family
Brands often sell several voltage systems. Fix this by recording the family name—such as EGO 56V, FLEX 24V, SKIL PWRCORE 20, DeWalt 20V MAX, Makita LXT or Makita XGT—before adding a tool to your cart.
Mistake: assuming voltage labels are interchangeable
Nominally similar voltage figures do not make batteries interchangeable between brands. Use only the battery and charger combinations explicitly approved for the tool.

Mistake: overlooking regional differences
Product names, voltage labels, warranty terms and available tools vary by market. Confirm the model number, plug and charger version, service coverage and stock in your country before paying.
Mistake: forgetting registration requirements
FLEX’s advertised five-year limited warranty depends on meeting registration requirements. Read the current warranty document and complete registration within its stated period; do not assume the same terms apply to every brand or region.
Choosing by reader profile
Homeowner with a lawn and occasional projects
Start with Ryobi 40V or Greenworks 60V, then compare the exact mower and battery kit against EGO 56V. SKIL PWRCORE 40 is also worth considering when its lawn-and-garden range and local pricing meet your needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Homeowner who also builds and repairs
Compare DeWalt’s 20V MAX/60V FLEXVOLT and Milwaukee M18 first. A mixed platform can reduce duplicate chargers and keep drills, saws and outdoor tools in one ecosystem, provided the exact outdoor products are available where you live.
Professional tradesperson
FLEX 24V, DeWalt, Milwaukee M18 and Makita are the more natural starting points. Evaluate ergonomics, daily battery rotation, charger speed, repair turnaround and parts access before considering the purchase price.
Existing Makita owner
Stay within your current LXT or XGT family unless there is a clear reason to add the other. Starting a second Makita family creates the same charger and battery duplication that you were trying to avoid.
Final decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact tool models you will buy next?
- Do all of those models use the same battery family?
- Have you priced a kit, a second battery, charging and consumables?
- Is the installed-battery weight comfortable for the job?
- Can you obtain batteries, parts and warranty service locally?
- Have you checked regional model numbers and compatibility statements?
- Are you choosing a platform for your dominant work rather than a single attractive promotion?
For most homeowners, investigate Ryobi 40V and Greenworks 60V before committing to a new outdoor ecosystem. For mixed trade and outdoor work, compare DeWalt and Milwaukee. For professional users already invested in Makita, stay deliberate about LXT versus XGT. EGO, FLEX and SKIL are not automatically inferior alternatives to replace: each can be the right platform when its battery family, tool coverage and support match the work you actually do.
