Arc is still listed for Mac download, but the available official information does not establish its current feature-development status.
These are workflow-based recommendations, not a tested performance ranking. Compare the browsers by ecosystem fit, organization tools, privacy controls, extensions and compatibility with your Mac before switching.
What to check before replacing Dia
Dia is not just a conventional browser: its plans page describes a free browser tier with profiles, tab groups, split view, picture-in-picture video, ad and tracking blocking, and cross-device sync. Paid tiers add AI functions such as asking about pages and using context from connected tools. The Browser Company says, “When the trial ends, choose a paid plan to keep using AI features, or keep using Dia as a free browser.” Plan details can change, so check the current Dia plans page before deciding whether you need a replacement.
The official Dia availability information lists macOS 14 or later and an Apple M1 chip or later. Verify the current download requirements before relying on that as a definitive compatibility statement.

- Extensions and engine: whether you need particular add-ons or prefer a browser that is not Chromium-based.
- AI and page data: whether you want browser AI and what information you are comfortable sending to an AI provider.
Best Dia alternatives for Mac at a glance
| Browser | Best fit | What the official information supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari | Apple-device continuity | Apple describes syncing passwords, bookmarks, history and tabs across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. | Apple’s feature descriptions are not an independent comparison of battery life or speed. |
| Vivaldi | Tab and workspace customization | Its desktop page lists tab stacks, tab tiling, workspaces, web panels, notes, sync, translation, page capture, pop-out video and Chrome extension support. | Its range of features may add complexity; a feature list does not establish ease of use. |
| Brave | Built-in blocking | Brave says Shields block ads, trackers, fingerprinting and cookies by default. Its features page also lists vertical tabs, sync, extensions, translation and Speedreader. | Blocking may need adjustment on sites that depend on scripts or ads. |
| Firefox | A non-Chromium browser with privacy controls and extensions | Mozilla says Firefox is not based on Chromium. Its pages list extensions, sync, tracker and fingerprinting protections, translation and picture-in-picture. | Check the availability of the extensions you rely on and compatibility with your important sites. |
| Arc | Continuity with The Browser Company’s earlier browser | The official page offers a Mac download and describes Dia as “the next evolution of Arc.” | The available official information does not establish Arc’s current feature-development status. |
Safari: best for staying in Apple’s ecosystem
If your priority is moving between Apple devices, Safari is the most direct alternative to consider. Apple documents syncing passwords, bookmarks, history and tabs across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch, and lists iCloud Tabs among its integrated features. See Apple’s Safari feature page.
Safari is a natural fit if you already use Apple services and want your browsing state available across your devices. Apple also makes performance and battery claims on that page; those are the company’s claims, not an independent test comparing Safari with the other browsers here.
Rank #2
- POWERFUL, LIGHTNING-FAST ANTIVIRUS: Protects your computer from viruses and malware through the cloud; Webroot scans faster, uses fewer system resources and safeguards your devices in real-time by identifying and blocking new threats
- IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION: Protects your usernames, account numbers and other personal information against keyloggers, spyware and other online threats targeting valuable personal data
- REAL-TIME ANTI-PHISHING: Proactively scans websites, emails and other communications and warns you of potential danger before you click to effectively stop malicious attempts to steal your personal information
- ALWAYS UP TO DATE: Webroot scours 95% of the Internet three times per day including billions of web pages, files and apps to determine what is safe online and enhances the software automatically without time-consuming updates
Vivaldi: best for configurable tabs and workspaces
Vivaldi is worth considering if Dia’s tab groups and split view are central to your workflow and you want more ways to arrange pages. Its desktop browser page lists tab stacks, tab tiling, workspaces, web panels, notes, sync, translation, page capture, pop-out video and support for Chrome extensions.
That breadth can suit people who like shaping their browser around different tasks. It can also mean more settings and features to learn. The feature list establishes availability, not that Vivaldi’s tools will feel simpler or work better for every user.
Brave: best for built-in blocking
Brave’s main distinction is its built-in Shields. Brave says they block ads, trackers, fingerprinting and cookies by default. The company also lists vertical tabs, sync, extensions, translation and Speedreader on its features page; Mac downloads are available from its download page.
Rank #3
- Firefox is designed to protect and respect your private information. Mozilla was voted the Most Trusted Internet Company for Privacy.
- How you use the Web is unique. Firefox lets you change it to match. Remove what you don't use, keep what you do and put it just about anywhere you want.
- Firefox was named the "speed king" in independent benchmark and performance tests against other browsers. Save time and do just about anything quicker than before.
Blocking can interfere with sites that rely on scripts or advertising to function. If an important page breaks, adjust Shields for that site and check whether the change fixes it. Brave’s descriptions of its protections are vendor statements, not independent verification.
Brave’s privacy policy, last updated September 23, 2026, says it does not collect or retain browsing history and also discusses processing tied to particular features. Read the policy for the features you use rather than treating that statement as a guarantee about every kind of browser activity.
Firefox: best for a non-Chromium browser
If you want an alternative browser engine, Mozilla says Firefox is not based on Chromium. Mozilla’s Firefox FAQ says it works on Mac and excludes macOS 10.14 and earlier. Confirm current requirements on Mozilla’s download page before installing.
Rank #4
- Friendly, colorful interface and error pages (such as when BumperCar blocks a page)
- Grown-up menu, accessible only with an administrator password
- Three pre-set fully customizable levels of protection from low to high
Mozilla’s features page lists extensions, sync, tracker and fingerprinting protections, translation and picture-in-picture. Before switching, check that the specific extensions and websites you depend on work for you; the feature pages do not provide a comparative site-compatibility test.
Arc: a Mac download, but an uncertain development picture
If you liked The Browser Company’s approach and want to see what remains available in Arc, its official page still offers a Mac download and presents Dia as Arc’s next evolution. That supports considering Arc as an option, but it does not establish whether Arc is currently receiving feature development. Do not choose it on the assumption that it is either actively developed or abandoned without more current, direct information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and AI: decide what page content you will share
The Browser Company’s Dia security page says a prompt and relevant page content may be sent to a third-party AI model when a user requests page-aware help. It also says Morning Brief summarizes pages viewed and that Dia is not HIPAA-compliant. These statements describe the situations identified on Dia’s page; they should not be generalized to all browsing activity.

If you handle confidential work, check the current privacy terms for the browser features you plan to use, especially AI and sync. Privacy statements from different vendors describe different practices and are not directly comparable guarantees or independent audits.
How to choose
- Choose Safari if keeping tabs and other browser information in step across Apple devices is your main goal.
- Choose Vivaldi if you want workspaces, tab stacks, tiling and extensive configuration, and are comfortable with a feature-rich interface.
- Choose Brave if built-in blocking is your priority and you are willing to adjust it when a site does not work as expected.
- Choose Firefox if you want a browser Mozilla describes as non-Chromium-based and its extension and privacy features meet your needs.
- Consider Arc if you specifically want to continue with the company’s earlier browser, but check its current status and support directly rather than inferring them from the download page.
Check each browser’s current download page for your Mac’s macOS version and processor requirements. The available official pages do not provide a complete, common-date compatibility matrix for all five browsers, and they do not establish a controlled cross-browser ranking for speed, memory use, battery life, security or site compatibility.
