For most small-business users, Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7, Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3, and HP ProBook 400 are the closest documented alternatives to Dell Pro Essential. They occupy the same commercial-laptop tier and can handle Microsoft 365, browser work, email, video meetings, spreadsheets, and typical line-of-business software. ASUS ExpertBook B1 is the better fit when explicit security, cellular connectivity, or durability testing is a priority. Acer TravelMate can reduce purchase cost or suit a branch office, but its exact model, battery behavior, and service terms need closer checking.
Do not compare these families by badge alone. Processors, memory, storage, displays, wireless options, operating-system editions, warranties, and local support vary by generation and country. Choose a specific configuration and verify its service terms before placing a fleet order.
What Dell Pro Essential sets as the baseline
Dell’s 2026 small-business buying guide positions Pro Essential for employees who spend their day in email, Microsoft 365, web browsers, and video calls. Dell describes the range as delivering “smooth, reliable performance at the most approachable price in Dell’s business lineup.” Its stated baseline is a travel-friendly 14-inch option, essential security and manageability, and optional ProSupport or ProSupport Plus services.

That description is a useful comparison point, not a fixed specification. A Pro Essential system may be sold with different CPU generations, RAM capacities, SSD sizes, display panels, wireless cards, Windows editions, and support packages. A 14-inch model and a 16-inch model also serve different mobility and spreadsheet needs. Treat the family name as a positioning guide, then compare the exact part number.

1. Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7: the closest 14-inch replacement
ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 is the clearest direct substitute when a company wants a conventional 14-inch business laptop rather than a consumer notebook. Lenovo’s 2025 Commercial Product Selector places it in the same comparison row as Dell Pro 14 and HP ProBook 400. That is stronger evidence of market positioning than simply calling any 14-inch laptop a “business alternative.”
Why it fits ordinary office work
- The 14-inch format balances screen area with portability for commuting and customer visits.
- It is suited to Microsoft 365, browser-based systems, email, video calls, documents, accounting portals and moderate spreadsheets when configured with adequate memory and storage.
- ThinkPad keyboards and pointing-device preferences can matter to employees who type all day; assess the exact regional keyboard and layout rather than assuming every listing is identical.
Configuration checks
Specify the exact Gen 7 configuration in a quote or purchase order. Confirm the processor generation, installed RAM, SSD capacity, display resolution and brightness, webcam, wireless standard, operating-system edition, included charger and upgrade options. A low-cost listing with limited memory can feel very different from a higher-memory configuration carrying the same E14 Gen 7 name.
2. Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3: more workspace for spreadsheets
ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 is the larger-screen counterpart for employees who benefit from a 16-inch workspace. Lenovo’s selector compares it with Dell Pro 16 and HP ProBook 400, making it another documented commercial peer rather than an unrelated consumer model.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the larger chassis is worth it
- Finance, operations and inventory users can keep wider spreadsheets or two application windows visible with less scrolling.
- Desk-based employees may prefer the larger keyboard and display, especially when the laptop is used without an external monitor.
- The larger format can be less convenient for frequent travel. Check the listed weight, power adapter dimensions and whether a USB-C dock is required at the desk.
Trade-offs versus a 14-inch fleet
A 16-inch notebook generally consumes more bag space and may weigh more, although the actual figures depend on the configuration. Do not infer battery life from screen size or from another E16 generation. Compare the manufacturer’s battery specification with independent testing when available, and decide whether employees will carry the system daily.
3. HP ProBook 400: a direct mainstream peer
HP ProBook 400 is listed beside Dell Pro 14/16 and ThinkPad E14/E16 in Lenovo’s 2025 commercial selector. That makes it a sensible shortlist candidate for a small business seeking a standard Windows fleet with a recognized commercial support channel.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What to compare on a ProBook listing
- Generation and processor: “ProBook 400” identifies a family, not one fixed CPU or performance level.
- Memory and storage: Confirm installed RAM and SSD capacity, not merely the maximum supported specification.
- Display: Check resolution, brightness, finish and whether a touch panel changes weight or battery behavior.
- Service: Read the regional warranty length, repair method, accidental-damage exclusions and availability of onsite response.
- Fleet controls: Confirm Windows Pro, firmware-management features and any enterprise-management requirements your administrator has.
ProBook 400 is therefore best treated as a direct peer to evaluate configuration by configuration. A favorable family reputation cannot establish that every marketplace listing has the memory, panel or warranty your staff needs.
4. ASUS ExpertBook B1: strongest stated security and durability angle
ASUS presents ExpertBook as a line for small and medium businesses. Its SMB material highlights Wi-Fi 6E or 4G/5G connectivity, TPM 2.0 for passwords and encryption keys, optional Intel vPro, and military-grade testing for temperature, altitude, humidity, vibration, shock and drops. SITA’s certification database contains ExpertBook B1 B1403 and B1503 entries.

Why an SMB may choose it
- Security foundation: TPM 2.0 supports protected credentials and encryption keys. Verify that the operating system and your management policy actually use the hardware.
- Manageability: An optional vPro platform can be useful for organizations that already operate compatible remote-management tools. It is not present in every configuration.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E or optional 4G/5G can help employees who work from shared offices or locations with unreliable wired access. Confirm radio bands and carrier compatibility for your country.
- Durability: The stated testing categories are useful signals for mobile work, but they do not mean every SKU has identical construction or that accidental damage is covered by warranty.
How to avoid overbuying or assuming features
Ask the seller for the complete model code and a specification sheet. Check whether it names TPM 2.0, the exact wireless module, cellular modem, vPro-capable processor and the tested chassis. “ExpertBook B1” by itself is not proof that all of those features are installed.
5. Acer TravelMate: a value or branch-office option
TravelMate is a plausible alternative when acquisition cost, straightforward ports or deployment in a branch office matter more than having the strongest documented enterprise-management story. A 2026 TechRadar business-laptop review discusses an Acer configuration with full HDMI, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB-A and a 3.5 mm headset jack.
Ports that can simplify office deployment
Full-size HDMI can connect to a meeting-room display without an adapter. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports can support high-speed docks or displays, while USB-A remains useful for existing peripherals. Confirm that the exact TravelMate SKU retains these ports; port layouts change by model and generation.

Interpret the battery figure correctly
TechRadar recorded 6.5 hours in its general-use test for one Acer model, compared with Acer’s 10-hour claim for that model. This is one review configuration and one test method, not a universal TravelMate result. Use it as a warning to check independent testing and employee usage patterns rather than as a fleet-wide battery ranking.
Where TravelMate needs extra diligence
- Identify the complete model and regional part number.
- Confirm whether RAM is replaceable, soldered or offered in the capacity you need.
- Check the local warranty, repair route and availability of business support.
- Review webcam quality, keyboard comfort and display brightness for employees who spend long days in calls or documents.
Which alternative is best for each workload?
| Work pattern | Most suitable starting point | Reason | Checks before approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email, Microsoft 365, browsers and calls | ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 or HP ProBook 400 | Closest documented peers to the Dell Pro Essential productivity brief | At least the memory and SSD capacity required by your applications; webcam and microphone quality |
| Large spreadsheets and side-by-side windows | ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 | Larger 16-inch workspace | Weight, panel quality, keyboard, docking and desk-to-home portability |
| Mobile or mixed-connectivity work | ASUS ExpertBook B1 | Optional Wi-Fi 6E or 4G/5G is explicitly highlighted | Carrier support, radio bands, SIM/eSIM implementation and actual SKU |
| Rougher travel conditions | ASUS ExpertBook B1 | Stated testing includes temperature, altitude, humidity, vibration, shock and drops | Tested model, warranty exclusions and accidental-damage coverage |
| Branch office or cost-sensitive deployment | Acer TravelMate | Business-oriented ports and a value positioning | Exact model, battery evidence, local service and port inventory |
Configuration guidance for a small-business fleet
Memory and storage
For current Microsoft 365, browser tabs, video calls and routine business applications, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD are sensible purchasing targets when offered at a reasonable price. They are configuration guidance, not a claim that every model includes those capacities or that every user needs them. Employees running specialized databases, virtual machines, large creative files or heavy data analysis may need more memory or storage.
Processor selection
Compare the exact processor generation and class rather than relying on a family label. Office users usually benefit more from sufficient RAM, a responsive SSD and a good display than from paying for a high-tier CPU they will not use. For line-of-business software, check the application vendor’s requirements and any virtualization or security features your administrator needs.
Display, webcam and input devices
Employees spend hours reading documents and looking at calls, so verify display resolution, brightness, anti-glare treatment and viewing angles. Check webcam resolution, microphone arrangement and privacy controls. A nominally similar laptop can be a poor choice for meetings if its camera and microphones are weak.
Operating system and management
Confirm whether the quote includes Windows Pro or another edition required for your policies. Check TPM 2.0, firmware settings, device-enrollment support and compatibility with your endpoint-management platform. Optional vPro is valuable only when your organization has a process and tools that use it.

Support, warranty and service: how to compare fairly
Dell’s baseline includes optional ProSupport and ProSupport Plus. Alternatives may offer different standard warranties, upgrade packs, onsite repair terms or accidental-damage coverage. There is no supported universal ranking of which brand has the best support because coverage varies by country, seller, product code and purchased service level.
Questions to put in every quote
- What is the exact manufacturer part number and generation?
- How long is the standard warranty in the buyer’s country?
- Is repair depot, courier, onsite or next-business-day service included?
- Are accidental drops, liquid damage and battery wear excluded?
- Can the vendor provide loan equipment if a repair interrupts operations?
- Who handles support when the laptop is bought through a reseller?
- Are spare chargers, keyboards and batteries available locally?
For a ten- or twenty-device fleet, a slightly higher purchase price can be justified if the service contract reduces downtime. Record the service level and response-time commitment in the purchase documentation rather than relying on a salesperson’s general description.
Ports and connectivity checklist
Map each employee’s peripherals before choosing a model. Confirm USB-C charging, the number and speed of USB-A ports, HDMI or DisplayPort support, headphone connectivity, Ethernet availability and whether a dock is required. A laptop that appears inexpensive can cost more after adding docks, adapters and replacement chargers.
For wireless work, verify the exact Wi-Fi generation and antenna configuration. If cellular connectivity is important, check whether the modem is built in, whether a SIM or eSIM is supported, which carrier bands are available locally and whether a separate data plan is required.
How to buy the right alternative: a repeatable process
- Define the user groups. Separate mobile staff, desk-based spreadsheet users, call-heavy employees and specialized application users.
- Set a minimum specification. Write down the required RAM, SSD, Windows edition, display characteristics, webcam, ports and wireless features before looking at prices.
- Shortlist exact models. Use ThinkPad E14 Gen 7, ThinkPad E16 Gen 3, HP ProBook 400, ASUS ExpertBook B1 or a named TravelMate SKU—not a vague family name alone.
- Validate compatibility. Test your VPN, endpoint-management agent, accounting or line-of-business software, docking station and security policies on the proposed configuration.
- Compare service terms. Put warranty duration, repair method, response time and accidental-damage options in the same spreadsheet as the hardware specifications.
- Order a pilot. Give one or two employees each proposed model and check keyboard comfort, webcam behavior, battery endurance in your normal workload, docking and wireless reliability.
- Standardize the approved SKU. Record the part number, BIOS or firmware policy, image version, accessories and support contact so replacement orders do not silently change the specification.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Comparing family names instead of configurations
Symptom: A listing looks cheaper but has less RAM, a smaller SSD or a lower-quality display. Fix: Compare complete part numbers and include accessories and support in the total.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming an advertised feature is universal
Symptom: A buyer expects vPro, 4G/5G, Wi-Fi 6E or a tested rugged chassis that is absent from the delivered unit. Fix: Require the feature in the written specification and verify it against the manufacturer’s configuration sheet.
Using a battery claim as a guarantee
Symptom: Employees report shorter runtime than the headline figure. Fix: Compare test-method details, screen brightness, wireless use and application load; evaluate a pilot unit under real work conditions.
Ignoring regional service differences
Symptom: A model bought from another market has a different keyboard, charger, warranty or cellular-band support. Fix: Buy the local part number or obtain written confirmation that warranty and accessories are valid in the deployment country.

- Choose HP ProBook 400 when it meets your required configuration and its local support contract is stronger or easier to administer.
- Choose ASUS ExpertBook B1 when documented SMB security, optional cellular connectivity or durability testing addresses a real operational requirement.
- Choose Acer TravelMate when the exact SKU offers the ports, price and service coverage your branch or value deployment needs.
What cannot be ranked reliably from the family names
The available manufacturer and review material does not establish one current price table, a universal battery winner or a single best warranty across these brands. Prices change by country, promotion, processor, memory, storage, display and reseller. Battery results depend on test method and configuration; the 6.5-hour Acer result is explicitly one TechRadar test against one 10-hour manufacturer claim. Support quality depends on the purchased plan and local service network.
The defensible conclusion is therefore configuration-led: start with the documented peer families, select the hardware your workload requires, and then choose the supplier that gives you the clearest warranty and service commitment in your region.
