There is no single drop-in replacement for CUDA-X. For a CUDA-oriented C++ application that must run on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, start with HIP. Choose SYCL when one modern C++ codebase must span CPUs and GPUs from several vendors. Choose Kokkos when an HPC or scientific code needs a higher-level execution and data abstraction. Choose OpenMP offload or OpenACC when directives can accelerate an existing C, C++ or Fortran application with minimal kernel rewrites. Use OpenCL or Vulkan compute for specialized device or graphics-stack requirements.

Benchmark representative kernels and complete application workflows before committing. Published comparisons show workload-specific winners, not a universally fastest programming model.

What an alternative to CUDA-X actually replaces

CUDA-X is commonly used to describe NVIDIA’s collection of CUDA-accelerated libraries and tools for domains such as linear algebra, machine learning, communication and scientific computing. A portable application therefore has two separate problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Programming-model portability: how kernels, parallel loops, memory and synchronization are expressed.
  • Library portability: how the application obtains BLAS, FFT, sparse-matrix, collective-communication, inference or domain-specific functionality on every target device.

HIP, SYCL, Kokkos, OpenMP and OpenACC primarily address the first problem. They do not automatically replace every CUDA-X library call. A successful migration inventories both the kernels and the vendor-specific libraries, then selects a portable implementation or isolates a backend for each library. An application can use a portable programming model while retaining a vendor-tuned library behind a narrow interface; that is often more practical than attempting a total rewrite.

The right choice depends on the hardware you must support, how much CUDA code you already have, whether Fortran is involved, the control you need over memory and execution, and the compiler, library, profiling and debugging tools available to your team.

Quick recommendations by goal

Primary goal Best starting point Why it fits Important qualification
Move an existing CUDA-style C++ codebase to AMD, with NVIDIA support retained HIP CUDA-like C++ runtime and kernel language make source migration comparatively direct. Audit CUDA-specific libraries, extensions and compiler assumptions; HIP releases can introduce incompatibilities.
Use modern C++ across CPUs and GPUs from multiple vendors SYCL Standard-oriented heterogeneous C++ model with several implementations and host/device targets. Compiler and library behavior differs between implementations, so establish a supported implementation matrix.
Keep HPC algorithms stable while changing execution backends Kokkos Separates execution and data management from application algorithms and supports many backends. Adopting the abstraction requires refactoring data structures and parallel patterns rather than a purely mechanical translation.
Incrementally accelerate a mature C, C++ or Fortran application OpenMP offload or OpenACC Directives can add accelerator execution without hand-writing every kernel and transfer. Performance and supported features depend strongly on the compiler and on how data regions and loops are expressed.
Target a broad range of heterogeneous devices with an established low-level stack OpenCL Explicit kernel and device model with broad historical device coverage. More low-level code and tuning are required; developer experience may be less convenient than newer C++ models.
Combine compute with a cross-platform graphics or rendering engine Vulkan compute Compute can share the Vulkan device, memory and synchronization ecosystem. It is a specialized graphics-stack choice, not the default replacement for HPC CUDA applications.

How to compare candidates before migrating

Evaluate every candidate against the same eight questions. A model that looks portable on paper can still fail your project if its compiler, libraries or tools do not cover the target systems.

  1. Migration effort: How much CUDA syntax, build logic and memory code can be retained, and how much must be redesigned?
  2. Hardware reach: Which AMD and NVIDIA GPU generations, CPU architectures and operating systems are supported by the implementation you will deploy?
  3. Abstraction and control: Do you need explicit streams, events, memory placement and launch configuration, or are higher-level parallel loops sufficient?
  4. Compiler and library maturity: Are the required language features, math libraries, communication libraries and debugging tools available for every device in your matrix?
  5. Host-language reuse: Can you preserve C++, C or Fortran code and its build system, or will the model force a substantial language change?
  6. Tooling: Can your team profile kernels, inspect memory transfers, debug device code and reproduce failures on each backend?
  7. Team expertise: Which model can your developers maintain, including its compiler flags, device plugins and release cadence?
  8. Measured performance: What happens on representative kernels and end-to-end workloads, including data movement, startup, reductions and I/O?

Record the answers for each target rather than treating “supports GPUs” as a sufficient specification. A framework can compile successfully on two vendors while exposing different performance or library behavior.

HIP: the most direct CUDA migration route

When HIP is the right fit

AMD describes HIP as a C++ runtime API and kernel language for AMD GPUs that is closely aligned with CUDA. Its stated purpose is to simplify porting NVIDIA CUDA applications to AMD GPUs while maintaining performance and a familiar C++ experience. That makes HIP the first candidate for an established CUDA-oriented application whose deployment must include AMD and may continue to include NVIDIA.

HIP is most attractive when the code already uses CUDA-like kernels, thread and block concepts, explicit device memory and asynchronous execution. The closer your code is to CUDA’s common C++ subset, the more migration can resemble a source and build conversion rather than a new algorithm implementation.

What still requires engineering work

  • CUDA libraries: Calls into domain libraries need HIP-compatible implementations or a backend abstraction. A kernel that ports cleanly can still be blocked by a library with no equivalent on the target device.
  • Extensions and intrinsics: Vendor-specific warp operations, assembly, special memory spaces and compiler attributes may require replacement or separate code paths.
  • Compiler assumptions: Build scripts, device-architecture flags, host compiler versions and warning settings must be tested on every supported toolchain.
  • Numerical behavior: Different instruction selection, reduction order and math implementations can expose tolerances that were hidden on one GPU family.

Plan a compatibility audit rather than assuming that a successful HIP translation proves portability.

Version management is part of the migration

AMD’s HIP documentation warns that HIP API 7.0 changes are incompatible with earlier releases and may require recompilation. Pin the HIP, compiler, SDK and dependent-library versions used for production, record the supported GPU architectures, and test upgrades in a separate compatibility job. Recompilation is not optional simply because application source code has not changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical HIP migration sequence

  1. Inventory the CUDA surface: List runtime calls, kernel launches, device properties, memory types, synchronization, libraries, intrinsics and build-system assumptions.
  2. Establish a clean baseline: Capture correctness results and timings for representative kernels and complete workflows on the current CUDA build.
  3. Convert the build: Add the HIP compiler and target architecture configuration while keeping the original CUDA build available for differential testing.
  4. Port ordinary kernels first: Resolve syntax and API differences before tackling architecture-specific intrinsics or hand-tuned code.
  5. Replace or isolate libraries: Put linear algebra, FFT, sparse and communication operations behind interfaces so each backend can select an implementation.
  6. Validate numerics and synchronization: Compare outputs, race-sensitive paths and error handling across devices; do not rely only on a final application score.
  7. Benchmark both vendors: Measure transfer time, kernel time, synchronization and end-to-end throughput on the GPUs you will actually deploy.

SYCL: modern heterogeneous C++ across vendors

Where SYCL fits

SYCL is a modern C++ heterogeneous programming model for expressing work on CPUs and accelerators. Implementations named in the NHR@FAU comparison material include Intel oneAPI DPC++, AdaptiveCpp, triSYCL and ComputeCpp. SYCL is a strong choice when a single source base must span multiple CPU and GPU vendors and the team is prepared to manage implementation-specific compiler and library behavior.

Its abstraction can cover device selection, queues, buffers or USM-style memory, parallel kernels and synchronization while keeping the application in C++. The model is attractive for new code or for teams willing to redesign interfaces around standard C++ concepts rather than preserve every CUDA launch detail.

Trade-offs for a CUDA codebase

  • A direct mechanical translation is less likely than with HIP when code depends heavily on CUDA-specific launch mechanics or intrinsics.
  • Different SYCL implementations can expose different supported language features, extensions, device plugins and library integrations.
  • Performance tuning may require implementation-specific choices even when the source remains portable.
  • Library availability must be checked separately for each vendor and operation; a portable kernel does not guarantee a portable high-performance math stack.

Define a small set of supported SYCL implementations and compiler versions. Treat that set as a product requirement, not as an assumption that every SYCL implementation behaves identically.

When to choose SYCL over HIP

Choose SYCL when CPU execution is a first-class target, when modern C++ abstractions matter more than preserving CUDA source, or when the project expects to add vendors beyond AMD and NVIDIA. Choose HIP when minimizing changes to an existing CUDA-style C++ codebase and reaching AMD quickly are the dominant goals.

Kokkos: a higher-level HPC portability layer

Execution and data as explicit abstractions

Kokkos Core is a C++ performance-portability model that abstracts parallel execution and data management. Its documented backends include CUDA, HIP, SYCL, HPX, OpenMP and C++ threads. The Kokkos documentation describes the goal as writing performance-portable applications for all major HPC platforms.

Instead of exposing every kernel launch directly, Kokkos encourages algorithms to operate on views and execution spaces. The application selects an execution backend while much of the algorithm code remains stable. This is useful for scientific and HPC teams that need to run the same methods on GPUs and CPUs or to change accelerator vendors without rewriting every loop.

What adoption entails

  • Refactor data structures into portable views or compatible interfaces.
  • Express parallel loops, reductions and scans through Kokkos patterns.
  • Make memory layout and execution space choices explicit where they affect locality.
  • Keep backend-specific code isolated for exceptional operations or vendor libraries.

Kokkos reduces repeated backend code, but it is not a zero-effort wrapper around arbitrary CUDA. Code built around raw pointers, implicit host/device assumptions or custom intrinsics still needs architectural changes.

Backend and compilation considerations

Kokkos can target CUDA, HIP, SYCL, HPX, OpenMP and C++ threads, allowing one project to cover device and host execution spaces. Its execution-space documentation notes that the SYCL backend can use just-in-time compilation when no GPU architecture is specified. Make architecture selection and deployment-time compilation behavior explicit in reproducible builds so that a production run does not unexpectedly compile or select a different device path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kokkos is usually the better fit than a direct HIP conversion when long-term algorithm portability and CPU execution matter more than preserving CUDA kernel source. It is less compelling for a small, highly hand-tuned CUDA component where introducing a new abstraction would cost more than maintaining two specialized kernels.

OpenMP offload and OpenACC: incremental directive-based acceleration

Why directive models are attractive

OpenMP offload and OpenACC let developers annotate existing C, C++ or Fortran loops and data regions instead of writing every device kernel and memory operation explicitly. This can shorten the path from a CPU application to an accelerator prototype, especially when the code already has clear loop nests and well-defined data ownership.

NVIDIA’s HPC compiler guide documents compiler switches for OpenACC, OpenMP GPU offload, standard-parallelism offload and CUDA. The exact command line and supported features depend on the compiler release and target, so use the documentation for the compiler installed on each system rather than copying flags between toolchains.

OpenMP offload

OpenMP is a broadly recognized shared-memory programming model with accelerator directives. It can preserve a common C, C++ or Fortran source base and combine host threading with device offload. Teams already using OpenMP can often extend existing parallel regions, but they still need to reason about data mapping, synchronization, reductions and unsupported constructs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenACC

OpenACC is designed around accelerator directives and is documented as portable across operating systems, host CPUs and accelerator types. It can be effective for incremental modernization of large scientific codes, including Fortran applications, when the compiler supports the required directives and runtime.

Limits compared with explicit models

  • Less explicit control can make it harder to tune occupancy, memory movement and launch behavior for a specific GPU.
  • Compiler decisions determine how loops are transformed; inspect generated reports and profile the result.
  • Complex pointer graphs, irregular parallelism and fine-grained synchronization may need restructuring or explicit device code.
  • Portability is constrained by compiler support, so test every directive and data clause on every target.

Use directives when reducing source disruption and preserving Fortran or established CPU code is more valuable than maximum low-level control. Move selected hotspots to an explicit model only where profiling shows that directives cannot meet the requirement.

OpenCL and Vulkan compute: specialized alternatives

OpenCL

OpenCL remains a lower-level heterogeneous kernel model with broad historical device coverage. It can be appropriate when an organization already operates an OpenCL stack, needs a C-based kernel environment, or targets devices not covered by its preferred C++ framework. Expect to manage explicit contexts, queues, buffers, kernels and synchronization. That control can help specialized deployments, but it increases boilerplate and tuning responsibility compared with SYCL or Kokkos.

Vulkan compute

Vulkan compute is most compelling when compute work is coupled to a cross-platform graphics or rendering stack. Sharing a Vulkan device, memory model and synchronization framework can avoid a second GPU API in an interactive application. For a traditional HPC replacement for CUDA-X, however, Vulkan is usually a specialized choice rather than the starting point.

What published performance evidence actually shows

A 2025 study titled Taking GPU Programming Models to Task for Performance Portability evaluated CUDA, HIP, Kokkos, RAJA, OpenMP, OpenACC and SYCL. It reported that SYCL was the fastest non-native programming model in 11 of 25 application/system pairs, including six cases on AMD systems. The same study reported that Kokkos and RAJA were near or above native performance on every combination except specified CloverLeaf and miniBUDE cases.

Those results are useful evidence that portable models can be competitive, but they do not establish a universal ranking. The winning model can change with the application, compiler, GPU generation, problem size, data layout and library mix. Use the study to design questions for your own benchmark, not to skip that benchmark.

Build a benchmark that can decide the question

  1. Select representative workloads: Include the kernels that dominate production time, plus at least one complete end-to-end workflow.
  2. Measure the full path: Separate host-to-device transfers, device-to-host transfers, kernel execution, synchronization, startup and I/O.
  3. Use production-sized data: Tiny examples can hide launch overhead and memory pressure; oversized examples can hide latency problems behind throughput.
  4. Check correctness: Compare tolerances, conservation rules and convergence behavior, not just elapsed time.
  5. Repeat across targets: Run the same input and measurement procedure on every CPU and GPU family you plan to support.
  6. Record the software matrix: Capture framework, compiler, driver, runtime, library and architecture versions with each result.
  7. Profile before tuning: Determine whether the bottleneck is arithmetic, memory bandwidth, synchronization, transfers, compilation or a library call.
  8. Evaluate maintenance cost: Include build complexity, debugging time and the number of backend-specific exceptions alongside performance.

A migration playbook for CUDA-X applications

1. Map the dependency surface

Create a component list for kernels, runtime APIs, memory allocation, streams and events, device discovery, synchronization, math and communication libraries, generated code and build scripts. Mark each item as portable, replaceable, or requiring a backend-specific implementation.

2. Separate algorithms from device services

Introduce interfaces for allocation, copies, synchronization, math primitives and collectives before changing every kernel. This prevents vendor calls from spreading through business logic and lets a HIP, SYCL, Kokkos or directive implementation coexist with the original path during validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select the smallest viable pilot

Choose one production-representative workflow that includes a dominant kernel and its surrounding data movement. A toy vector-add example cannot expose library gaps, memory-layout problems or synchronization costs.

4. Port correctness before optimization

Keep deterministic inputs and reference outputs. Check boundary conditions, reductions, atomics, error paths and asynchronous lifetimes. Only after the new path is numerically trustworthy should you tune layouts, launch configuration or compiler options.

5. Define a support matrix

Write down supported GPU families, CPU hosts, operating systems, compilers, framework releases and libraries. A portability claim without a tested matrix is only a source-code claim.

6. Keep a fallback during rollout

Retain the original CUDA path or a CPU reference until the replacement has passed correctness, performance and operational tests. A fallback also provides a useful differential oracle when a backend upgrade changes results.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

7. Automate regression testing

Run compilation, unit tests, numerical comparisons and representative performance checks for every backend in continuous integration or scheduled hardware testing. Include a toolchain-upgrade job so incompatibilities are discovered before a production deployment.

Architecture patterns that improve portability

Use a narrow backend boundary

Keep device allocation, synchronization, collectives and vendor libraries behind a small interface. The application should express domain operations, while the backend decides whether to call HIP, a SYCL implementation, Kokkos, a directive-generated kernel or a host fallback.

Make data movement visible

Portable performance depends on where data lives and when it moves. Avoid hidden copies and temporary allocations in inner loops. Represent ownership and lifetime clearly so a backend can map data regions, views or unified memory without guessing.

Avoid accidental hardware assumptions

Do not encode a fixed warp width, subgroup size, cache line, alignment, atomic behavior or floating-point reduction order unless the code has a guarded backend path and a tested fallback. Query or express the capability through the chosen model where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep specialized kernels exceptional

There are legitimate reasons to retain a vendor-tuned kernel for one hotspot. Isolate it behind the same interface as the portable implementation and document the hardware and compiler assumptions. Portability is improved when exceptions are few, visible and replaceable.

Toolchains, skills and operational requirements

Requirement What to verify Typical risk if ignored
Compilers and language support Required C++, C or Fortran version, device compilation, templates, exceptions and diagnostics on each backend. Code works on one implementation but fails or silently changes behavior on another.
Libraries Portable or backend-specific BLAS, FFT, sparse, communication and domain operations. Kernel portability is achieved while a critical library call remains vendor-locked.
Profiling and debugging Device traces, memory-transfer views, race detection, source-level debugging and reproducible profiling. Performance regressions and asynchronous faults become difficult to diagnose.
Build and packaging Architecture selection, compiler versions, runtime libraries, drivers and container or module policies. Developers and production use different binaries or incompatible runtimes.
Team capability Knowledge of the model, compiler diagnostics, memory behavior and target hardware. Portability abstractions accumulate backend-specific workarounds without clear ownership.

No single option eliminates these requirements. A higher-level model can reduce kernel boilerplate while increasing the importance of understanding its execution and data abstractions.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

“The code compiles, but a required CUDA-X library is missing”

Classify the operation as a standard algorithm, a portable math primitive or a vendor-specific service. Replace it with a supported implementation where available, isolate a backend call behind an interface, or redesign the algorithm to reduce the dependency. Do not label the application portable while leaving the unresolved call in the critical path.

HIP conversion breaks on an intrinsic or extension

Identify whether the operation expresses a general algorithm or a particular GPU instruction. Use a portable primitive for the former; provide guarded backend implementations for the latter. Add tests for boundary values and synchronization because an apparently equivalent intrinsic can differ in ordering or precision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SYCL builds on one implementation but not another

Pin a supported implementation and compiler combination, remove nonessential extensions, and isolate implementation-specific code. Expand the support matrix only after the common subset passes correctness and performance tests.

Kokkos performance is lower than the original kernel

Profile execution and data movement, then inspect execution space, memory layout, view placement, team or range policy and reduction strategy. Confirm that the intended backend and architecture were selected. Preserve a specialized kernel for a proven hotspot only after measuring the cost of maintaining it.

Directive offload produces little speedup

Inspect compiler reports and a profile for loop serialization, repeated data transfers, small kernels, unsupported calls or synchronization between regions. Enlarge data regions where safe, restructure dependencies, and move only the limiting loop to an explicit model if the directive implementation cannot expose enough control.

Results differ between vendors

Check reduction order, floating-point modes, atomics, uninitialized data, race conditions and library implementations. Define an application-level tolerance or invariant appropriate to the algorithm instead of requiring bitwise identity without justification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A framework upgrade invalidates the build

Reproduce the failure with the previously pinned toolchain, consult the release’s compatibility notes, and upgrade compiler, runtime and dependent libraries as a tested set. HIP API 7.0’s documented incompatibility with earlier releases is a concrete reason to treat upgrades as migration projects.

Which model should each team choose?

Existing CUDA C++ team with an urgent AMD requirement

Prototype HIP first. Measure how much of the code and library stack converts cleanly, then decide whether the remaining exceptions justify a longer-term abstraction such as Kokkos or a separate library interface.

New cross-vendor C++ project

Evaluate SYCL and Kokkos in a pilot. SYCL offers a modern heterogeneous C++ model; Kokkos offers a stronger separation between algorithms, data and execution spaces. Select the one whose compiler, library and debugging matrix matches the hardware you will operate.

Scientific or HPC code with substantial Fortran

Start with OpenMP offload or OpenACC when directives can preserve the existing language and data structures. Use profiling to identify sections that need explicit kernels or a library backend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application that must share a graphics device

Consider Vulkan compute when synchronization, memory and scheduling must live in the rendering stack. Do not select it solely because it is cross-platform; verify that its tooling and numerical libraries meet the workload’s needs.

Organization with many CPU-only deployments

Favor a model with a tested host backend, such as Kokkos, SYCL or OpenMP, and include CPU performance in the benchmark. A GPU abstraction that performs well only on accelerators may not be the most portable operational choice.

A practical selection rule

Use HIP for the shortest path from CUDA-style C++ to AMD and NVIDIA. Use SYCL for a modern, multi-vendor C++ codebase that treats CPUs and GPUs as peers. Use Kokkos when execution and data abstractions are central to an HPC codebase’s longevity. Use OpenMP offload or OpenACC when directives provide the fastest incremental route from established C, C++ or Fortran. Reserve OpenCL and Vulkan compute for requirements that specifically favor their lower-level or graphics-integrated ecosystems.

Whichever path you choose, make the decision with a benchmark and a support matrix. Portability is not just the ability to compile on another GPU; it is the ability to deliver correct, maintainable and sufficiently fast results across the hardware and toolchains you actually operate.
