You usually do not need to build a card-grading model to identify cards, screen condition, or get a professional grade. The right alternative depends on the result you need: use a grading company for authentication and certification, a scanning app for identification and research, or a manual inspection for preliminary triage. A centering tool or magnifier can help with one part of that work, but neither produces a professional grade.
Do you need to build your own card-grading model?
Only if your specific workflow requires a custom automated system and you are prepared to validate it. For most collectors and card businesses, an existing service or a simpler screening method is more practical. The key distinction is the output: an app may identify a card or estimate its value, while professional grading services assess condition and authenticate cards, and may encapsulate them.

Use a professional grading service for authentication and certification
Sending a card to an established grader is the clearest alternative when you need professional assessment rather than an informal estimate. PSA says its graders authenticate cards, assess condition on a 1-to-10 scale, and encapsulate them. Its service page currently displays a Standard tier at $59.99 per card with an estimated turnaround of 90–100 business days. PSA cautions that estimates are not guaranteed and that prices and service offerings may change, so check its current service details before submitting.
Compare the kind of professional workflow you want
- PSA: Its published grading criteria address condition factors including surface, centering, paper condition, and print quality. PSA also recognizes subjective elements such as eye appeal. Its service includes authentication before grading.
- Beckett: It describes four core categories—centering, corners, edges, and surface—and says these appear as subgrades on its label. Check its current grading information for available services and submission details.
- CGC: CGC describes a process involving multiple professionals and technology. Its FAQ says AI assists with tasks such as card attribution and centering measurement, while forensic devices support detection of alterations and counterfeits. See its description of the grading process.
- AGS: AGS describes an AI-oriented workflow with service selection, card lookup, and attribute breakdowns such as centering and edges. Treat these as the company’s descriptions of its own service, not independent evidence that its grading is more accurate than another provider’s. Its website is the place to check its current offering.
These providers’ own materials explain their criteria and workflows, but do not establish an independent accuracy ranking or show which label produces the best resale result. Choose according to your intended use, the service’s current terms, and whether the people or venue that matter to you recognize its output.

Use a scanning app for identification and collection research
A card-scanning app can reduce manual cataloguing and help you decide what to investigate or submit. PSA says its app offers scanning and research features, including estimated values, population reports, sales history, and listings. Those features support research; they are not the same as PSA’s separate authentication and grading service. See the PSA app information and compare its role with the grading service.
Use an app’s value or grade-related information as a lead, not a certification. Estimates and market information can help prioritize cards, but do not establish that a particular card is genuine or predict the grade a professional will assign.

Use a manual screen to filter likely submission candidates
For inexpensive triage, inspect cards using the relevant grader’s published criteria. PSA discusses surface defects, centering, paper condition, and print quality; Beckett’s core categories are centering, corners, edges, and surface. Looking across the whole card is more useful than relying on one attractive feature: a well-centered card can still have corner, edge, or surface flaws.
Apply the stated standard, not a universal rule
PSA describes a PSA Gem-MT 10 as virtually perfect and publishes approximate centering tolerances of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. Those are PSA’s stated criteria, not a threshold to apply to Beckett, CGC, AGS, or every other grader. Review the relevant company’s grading standards before using a threshold to screen cards.

A manual screen can flag obvious flaws or help eliminate cards that are unlikely to merit a submission fee. It cannot authenticate a card, account for every grader’s judgment, or promise a final grade. PSA explicitly notes that grading includes both objective and subjective considerations.
Use narrow tools for narrow inspection tasks
Centering measurement
If the question is simply whether a card appears off-center, measuring centering may be more proportionate than building a full grading model. PSA publishes centering criteria, and CGC says its technology can assist graders with centering measurement. Those examples show that centering is a distinct inspection task; they do not validate a particular consumer centering app or establish its accuracy.

Use neutral light, handle the card as little as practical, and do not clean or alter it based on an app’s suggestion. Magnification helps you see details; it does not turn an inspection into a reliable grade prediction.

Follow the selected grader’s current packing instructions rather than assuming all companies use the same requirements. Beckett’s submission guidance gives oversized semi-rigid holders such as Card Saver I as an example. Confirm the instructions for your chosen service before packing, because requirements can differ and change.
