There is no single fund that reproduces Berkshire Hathaway’s mix of insurance float, wholly owned operating businesses, public equities and cash. For most investors, the practical choice is to match the part of Berkshire’s appeal they actually want: Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) for direct large-cap value exposure, iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) for the simplest diversified core, Avantis U.S. Large Cap Value ETF (AVLV) for a more explicit factor approach, or Fairfax Financial and Markel for concentrated insurance-company analogues.
The right substitute depends on whether you value diversification, value intensity, operating-company resemblance or simplicity. The comparison below separates those trade-offs so you can choose deliberately instead of treating every “Berkshire alternative” as the same investment.
What makes Berkshire Hathaway difficult to replace?
Berkshire Hathaway is not a single-style holding. Its appeal comes from several activities operating together: insurance businesses that generate float, wholly owned operating companies, a portfolio of publicly traded equities and a large cash position. An investor buying Berkshire stock receives that combination through one corporate balance sheet and one management team.
An exchange-traded fund can diversify company-specific risk, but it does not own Berkshire’s operating subsidiaries or run an insurance operation. An individual insurer can look more like Berkshire’s corporate structure, but it leaves the investor exposed to one underwriting platform, one capital-allocation team and one governance system. That is why the best alternative is role-specific rather than universal.

- Value plus profitability and expected-return screens: AVLV is the more explicit factor option.

None of these choices exactly recreates Berkshire’s combination. The decision is therefore about which characteristics matter most to your portfolio.

Vanguard Value ETF (VTV): the closest direct value-ETF substitute
What VTV is designed to do
Vanguard says VTV seeks to track a benchmark measuring the investment return of large-capitalization value stocks. That makes it the most direct ETF answer to the question, “Which fund is most like Berkshire Hathaway if I mainly want value exposure?” It spreads company risk across a portfolio instead of making the result depend on one conglomerate’s decisions.

VTV is a style substitute, not a business-model substitute. Its holdings are selected for large-cap value characteristics, so the fund does not generate insurance float, own operating subsidiaries or hold a corporate cash balance in the way Berkshire does. The return will reflect the performance of its benchmark constituents and the fund’s implementation, not the success of one capital allocator.
When VTV fits
- You want a clear large-cap value allocation rather than a broad-market fund.
- You prefer index-style diversification over researching an individual insurer.
- You want the value sleeve of a portfolio to be easy to size and rebalance.
What to verify before buying
The current VTV expense ratio and holdings were not stated in the available material. Vanguard’s product page and latest fact sheet are dynamic, so verify the fee, benchmark description, number of holdings and sector mix immediately before investing. A value label does not guarantee that the fund will behave like Berkshire in every market: it remains an ETF whose exposure changes as the benchmark and constituent prices change.

iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV): the broad, low-cost core
What IVV provides
BlackRock describes IVV as tracking the S&P 500 and serving as a low-cost core building block. The current prospectus data cited for 2026 lists 505 holdings and a 0.03% expense ratio. Those figures make IVV the broadest and simplest choice among the options discussed here, although it is not a dedicated value fund.
Because the S&P 500 is market-cap weighted, the fund can be more growth heavy than VTV or AVLV. That is an important distinction for an investor searching for “value” in the title of this article. IVV maximizes broad U.S. large-company diversification and liquidity, while accepting that the portfolio’s style mix will be whatever the index’s market-cap weights produce.
When IVV fits
- You want one broad U.S. equity core rather than a specialized value sleeve.
- You place a high priority on the stated 0.03% expense ratio from BlackRock’s 2026 prospectus data.
- You would rather avoid the additional model or management decisions involved in an actively managed value fund.
What IVV does not solve
IVV does not provide Berkshire-like insurance operations, wholly owned businesses or a dedicated capital-allocation team. It also does not guarantee value outperformance; its purpose is broad S&P 500 exposure. If your main objective is an explicit value tilt, VTV or AVLV is a more targeted match.
Avantis U.S. Large Cap Value ETF (AVLV): value with factor and profitability screens
How the strategy differs
Avantis reports that AVLV is actively managed and uses current prices and company financials to overweight securities with higher expected returns. The approach includes profitability-to-book information rather than relying only on a traditional index classification. As of 2026-09-30, Avantis reported 303 holdings and a 0.15% net expense ratio.
This design gives AVLV a more explicit factor orientation than IVV and a different implementation from a plain large-cap value index. The additional decision-making is also the key risk: results depend on the factor model, portfolio construction and the managers’ execution. A screen that looks attractive at one date can produce different exposures as prices and financial data change.

When AVLV fits
- You want a large-cap value fund that incorporates profitability and expected-return information.
- You accept a higher stated fee than IVV in exchange for an active, factor-based process.
- You understand that model and manager risk are part of the investment, not just market risk.
Questions to ask about AVLV
- Is the 0.15% net expense ratio still current for the share class and date you are considering?
- How has the portfolio’s sector, size and profitability exposure changed since the 2026-09-30 holdings date?
- Are you comfortable with factor periods in which the strategy can lag a broad market index?
AVLV can be a useful value-oriented building block, but it should not be described as a replicated Berkshire portfolio. It is a rules-and-management-driven equity strategy, not an insurance conglomerate.
Fairfax Financial: a concentrated corporate analogue
Why investors compare it with Berkshire
Fairfax Financial is an operating company rather than a diversified fund. That makes it more comparable to Berkshire’s corporate form than any ETF: results depend on insurance underwriting, investment decisions, capital allocation and governance at one enterprise. Kiplinger’s 2025 reporting on Fairfax states that book value per share increased an average 18.7% per year from 1985 through 2024, with the performance attributed to Fairfax Financial.
The figure is a historical average over the stated period, not a forecast or a promise of future returns. It also describes book value per share, not a total-return series for an investor’s account. Use it as context for the company’s long record, then examine current underwriting results, capital position and management decisions separately.
Risks that an ETF avoids
- Underwriting risk: insurance results can deteriorate if pricing or claims experience worsens.
- Catastrophe risk: severe events can create concentrated losses for an insurer.
- Capital-allocation risk: one management team determines where earnings and investment capital go.
- Governance risk: a shareholder owns one corporate decision-making system rather than an index methodology.
Fairfax may appeal to an investor who specifically wants an insurance-and-investment company, but it is not a diversification substitute for a multi-holding ETF. Any position requires tolerance for company-specific drawdowns and the work of following one insurer’s disclosures.
Markel: another insurance-and-investment company, not a fund
Markel is likewise a single-company alternative whose results depend on underwriting, investments and management execution. Kiplinger reported in 2025 that Markel’s share price increased roughly 15% annualized over 38 years. The period and measure matter: this is a historical share-price annualization, not a current valuation, a total-return figure or a guarantee.

Markel’s corporate structure can look more like Berkshire than an index ETF because an investor is buying an operating insurance business and its capital-allocation decisions. The same resemblance creates concentration. A problem in underwriting, a catastrophe loss, an investment mistake or a governance issue can affect the entire holding rather than one small position inside a diversified fund.
Who should consider a corporate analogue?
- Investors who deliberately want one insurance company and are prepared to research it as an individual security.
- Investors who accept that management quality and capital allocation can dominate the result.
- Investors who can withstand idiosyncratic volatility without abandoning the position at an unfavorable time.
If your actual goal is to diversify beyond one conglomerate, replacing Berkshire with another single insurer does not achieve the same diversification as owning an ETF. It changes the company, not the concentration structure.
Choosing between VTV, IVV and AVLV
| Your priority | Most direct fit | Why | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated large-cap value exposure | VTV | Vanguard defines it around a large-cap value benchmark | Current fee and holdings require verification; no Berkshire operating businesses |
| Maximum simplicity and broad diversification | IVV | Tracks the S&P 500, with 505 holdings and a 0.03% expense ratio in BlackRock’s 2026 data | Can be growth heavy and is not a pure value strategy |
| Value plus profitability and expected-return signals | AVLV | Actively uses prices and company financials, including profitability-to-book information | 0.15% net expense ratio and exposure to manager and factor-model risk |
| One-company insurance resemblance | Fairfax or Markel | Operating insurers are structurally closer to Berkshire than funds | No fund-level diversification; underwriting, catastrophe and governance risk |
There is no requirement to choose only one role. An investor could use a broad-market or value ETF as the diversified foundation and treat an individual insurer, if suitable, as a separately sized satellite position. The appropriate mix depends on your risk tolerance, research capacity and reason for owning Berkshire in the first place.
A step-by-step way to select an alternative
- Identify the feature you are replacing. Write down whether your attraction is value stocks, diversification, insurance exposure, a long-term capital allocator or a simple one-ticket holding. If you cannot name the feature, do not assume another “Berkshire-like” label solves the problem.
- Choose the structure before the ticker. Select a multi-holding ETF if reducing company-specific risk is the priority. Select an operating company only if you intentionally want concentrated underwriting and management exposure.
- Match the style intensity. Choose VTV for a straightforward large-cap value benchmark, IVV for broad S&P 500 exposure, or AVLV if you want profitability and expected-return screens in an active factor process.
- Check current documents. Confirm the latest expense ratio, holdings, benchmark or mandate, and any “net” fee qualification. The figures in this article are dated and should not be treated as permanent product specifications.
- Decide how the position will be sized. A diversified ETF can serve as a core holding; an individual insurer needs a size that reflects its one-company risk. Do not let a familiar corporate story substitute for a concentration decision.
- Set a review rule. For an ETF, review whether the fund still delivers the intended exposure and cost. For Fairfax or Markel, review underwriting, catastrophe exposure, capital allocation and governance. Avoid changing the thesis solely because one short period lags another option.
- Rebalance deliberately. Use a written target or range and a calendar or threshold rule. Rebalancing is a portfolio decision; it should not be driven by a headline comparing one historical performance number with another.
How to diversify beyond one conglomerate without losing your objective
Use a core-and-satellite interpretation
A practical framework is to separate the diversified core from any concentrated expression of the Berkshire idea. IVV can represent broad U.S. large-company exposure, while VTV or AVLV can supply a deliberate value tilt. Fairfax or Markel, if included at all, can be evaluated as individual-company satellites rather than as the portfolio’s entire diversification plan.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This framework does not prescribe a percentage allocation. The important distinction is structural: ETFs spread company risk across holdings, while a single insurer leaves the portfolio dependent on one underwriting and management platform.

Do not confuse labels with exposures
“Value,” “quality,” “insurance” and “Berkshire alternative” describe different things. VTV is defined by large-cap value exposure. IVV follows a broad market index and may lean toward growth. AVLV combines value-oriented selection with profitability and expected-return information. Fairfax and Markel are operating businesses. Compare the actual mandate and risks, not just the marketing shorthand.
Fees, holdings and dates that require a fresh check
Product data changes. Before investing, open the current issuer document and confirm:
- VTV: latest expense ratio, holdings and benchmark description from Vanguard’s current fact sheet.
- IVV: current holdings and expense ratio; the figures cited here are 505 holdings and 0.03% from BlackRock iShares’ 2026 prospectus data.
- AVLV: current net expense ratio and holdings; the cited figures are 0.15% and 303 holdings as of 2026-09-30 from Avantis Investors.
- Fairfax and Markel: current annual reports and insurance disclosures, rather than relying on the historical figures reported by Kiplinger.
Fees should be compared on the same basis. AVLV’s figure is a net expense ratio, while IVV’s cited figure is an expense ratio from current prospectus data. VTV’s current fee was not stated in the material used for this article, so it should not be guessed or inferred from an older page.

Kiplinger reproduced Warren Buffett’s statement from Berkshire’s 2020 annual meeting: “In my view, for most people, the best thing to do is to own the S&P 500 index fund. People will try to sell you other things because there’s more money in it if they do.” Kiplinger also records his 1994 statement that “periodically investing in an index fund, a know-nothing investor can actually outperform most investment professionals.”
Those remarks support the case for a simple broad-market core such as IVV when simplicity and diversification are the primary objectives. They do not establish that IVV is the best choice for every investor seeking a value tilt, nor do they turn Fairfax, Markel, VTV or AVLV into Berkshire replicas. Use the comments as a reminder to match complexity to your actual goal.
Common mistakes when replacing Berkshire
- Replacing one concentrated stock with another: Fairfax or Markel may resemble Berkshire operationally, but neither provides ETF-style diversification.
- Assuming every value fund behaves alike: VTV’s benchmark exposure and AVLV’s active factor process can produce different holdings and outcomes.
- Treating a historical number as a forecast: Fairfax’s 18.7% average book-value-per-share growth from 1985–2024 and Markel’s roughly 15% annualized share-price increase over 38 years are backward-looking measures.
- Ignoring the date on a fee or holding count: IVV’s 505 holdings and 0.03% expense ratio are cited as 2026 prospectus data; AVLV’s 303 holdings are as of 2026-09-30.
- Expecting an ETF to generate insurance float: diversified funds provide market exposure, not Berkshire’s insurance operating model.
- Buying a label without reading the mandate: verify the benchmark, active-management approach, factor screens and current portfolio before deciding.
Bottom line
For most investors seeking a diversified value alternative, start by choosing the exposure rather than the story. VTV is the closest direct large-cap value ETF substitute; IVV is the broad, low-cost core with 505 holdings and a 0.03% expense ratio in BlackRock’s 2026 data; AVLV is the factor-oriented value option with a 0.15% net expense ratio and 303 holdings as of 2026-09-30. Fairfax Financial and Markel are closer to Berkshire’s operating-company form, but they remain concentrated insurers with underwriting, catastrophe, governance and management risks.
No choice duplicates Berkshire Hathaway. The strongest decision is the one whose diversification, value intensity, cost, factor exposure and operating risk match the job you need the investment to perform.
