For most projects, use OSV-Scanner as the transparent dependency baseline, add Trivy when you build container images or ship operating-system packages, and add Semgrep or CodeQL for vulnerabilities in your own source code. Anthropic OSS Scanner is different: it is an opt-in, periodic, model-driven audit for enrolled open-source projects. It can produce reproduction steps and proposed patches, but Anthropic says its reports are fully model-generated and may be incorrect.
The right choice depends on what you need to inspect (lockfiles, source trees, images, or OS packages), whether findings must be reproducible locally, and how much automation your repository can support.
What Anthropic OSS Scanner does—and why you may need another tool
Anthropic announced OSS Scanner on October 8, 2026. Enrolled open-source projects receive periodic scans at no cost, using Anthropic’s strongest models. A project joins by opening a pull request that adds the required configuration. The build uses the project’s Dockerfile; Anthropic then moves the resulting image into an isolated virtual machine with no Internet access for the scan. Findings are emailed to maintainers.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The service is intended as a deep audit rather than a conventional software-composition-analysis (SCA) feed. Its agents can reason about behavior, attempt to reproduce a suspected issue, and suggest a patch where one is available. Anthropic’s FAQ says the harness checks that a report corresponds to a vulnerability in the target project and runs agents in hardened, Internet-disabled sandboxes.

There are important boundaries. Scans are periodic rather than a command you run on every pull request, enrollment is limited to projects that meet the service’s process, and the reports are not human-reviewed. Anthropic explicitly warns that a report can be wrong. That makes OSS Scanner a potentially useful second opinion, not a replacement for deterministic dependency checks, source-code analysis, or an incident-response process.

No reliable, directly comparable performance benchmark is established for these tools. Treat the table as a scope and workflow comparison, not a ranking by detection rate.
1. OSV-Scanner: the closest transparent dependency alternative
What it scans
OSV-Scanner is an officially supported frontend to the OSV database. It can inspect dependency declarations and lockfiles in a source tree, and its current V2 workflow also covers container images. It extracts packages first, then matches their versions against advisories whose affected ranges are represented in machine-readable OSV format.
This design is valuable when you need to explain a finding. The result is a package, a resolved version, and an advisory range rather than an opaque model judgment. The OSV database is open, and the scanner can run without sending your source tree to a hosted analysis service.
Why choose it
- Reproducibility: a teammate or CI runner can repeat the same package-to-advisory match locally.
- Broad input options: source trees, lockfiles, and container images can be handled in one tool family.
- Automation: the CLI is designed for terminals and CI/CD, while a Go library is available when you need to embed scanning in another program.
- Fix guidance: the documented V2 usage includes guided-fix workflows for supported manifests.
Where it stops
OSV-Scanner answers “Does this resolved package version match a known advisory?” It does not, by itself, prove that your application reaches the vulnerable code path, find a novel logic flaw, or replace source-code data-flow analysis. Advisory coverage also depends on an ecosystem publishing a usable OSV record; an unlisted or newly discovered issue may not appear until an advisory exists.
Practical rollout
- Run a source-tree scan against the repository that contains your manifests and lockfiles.
- Review each result against the actual resolved version, not only the version range written in a top-level manifest.
- Enable the scanner in CI so new dependency changes are checked before merge.
- Add image scanning for the artifacts you publish, and retain the scan result with the image digest.
- Use the guided-fix workflow where it supports your package manager; otherwise update, regenerate the lockfile, and rerun the scan.
Choose OSV-Scanner first when your central requirement is an open, inspectable dependency record that developers can reproduce on a laptop and in CI.

2. Trivy: the practical choice for images and operating-system packages
What it adds
Trivy is designed for projects that ship container images or depend on operating-system packages. Its documentation covers vulnerability detection in container and ecosystem packages and automatic retrieval and caching of vulnerability databases. It can therefore inspect the packages introduced by a base image as well as application dependencies present in the image.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Important coverage qualification
Trivy’s result depends on the advisory source for the operating system or ecosystem. Its documentation notes that some third-party repositories are not covered by official OS advisories. A clean result is consequently not proof that every package source or private component is vulnerability-free.
Recommended workflow
- Build the exact image you intend to release, including the production stage rather than only a development stage.
- Run Trivy against that image in CI and retain the output with the image digest and build metadata.
- Set a policy for severity and exploitability that matches your release process; do not silently treat every advisory as an exploitable application flaw.
- Rebuild when the base image or package database changes, because a previously scanned image can acquire newly published advisories without any source-code change.
- For a failing result, identify whether the package comes from the base operating system, a language dependency, or your own layer, then update the relevant input and rescan.
Use Trivy alongside OSV-Scanner when you need both a source-tree dependency view and an image-layer view. The two scans answer different questions and can legitimately report different package sets.
3. Semgrep and CodeQL: source-code complements
When dependency matching is not enough
A vulnerable library is only one class of risk. Bugs in authentication, input validation, authorization, command construction, deserialization, and data handling can exist even when every dependency is current. Rule-based analyzers inspect your code for known insecure patterns; data-flow analysis follows values across functions and files to identify paths that a simple text match would miss.
Semgrep
Semgrep is a practical choice when you want fast rules that can run on every pull request and be customized for your framework or coding conventions. Teams can begin with relevant security rules, then add organization-specific checks for dangerous APIs or required validation. Keep custom rules narrowly scoped and test them against safe examples to control false positives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCodeQL
CodeQL builds a representation of the code and evaluates semantic queries over it. That makes it useful for multi-step data-flow issues where a source, sanitizer, and sink may be separated across several files. It generally requires more setup and analysis time than a lightweight pattern check, so schedule it appropriately for the languages and repository size you support.

How to combine them with SCA
- Run OSV-Scanner or Trivy to identify vulnerable package versions.
- Run Semgrep on every pull request for quick, actionable rules.
- Run CodeQL on supported languages when deeper data-flow coverage justifies the compute and maintenance.
- Route findings to owners with the file, rule or query, and remediation guidance attached.
- Suppress only with a documented reason and an expiry or review date.
Neither Semgrep nor CodeQL is a substitute for dependency-advisory matching; they cover the code your team writes rather than proving that a package version is outside an advisory’s affected range.
4. GitHub Dependabot: update automation inside GitHub
Dependabot is best understood as repository-native dependency alerting and update automation. It uses the GitHub dependency graph and advisory information to flag affected dependencies and can open pull requests that update versions. This is a different workflow from a model-driven audit: it keeps dependencies current and reduces maintenance effort, but it does not attempt to reason about arbitrary project behavior or produce an agent-generated reproducer.
Choose it when
- Your code and dependency manifests are already managed in GitHub.
- Maintainers want update pull requests rather than a separate scanning service.
- You can run tests automatically on proposed upgrades.
Guardrails for update pull requests
- Require the full test suite and security checks before merging an update.
- Review major-version changes manually; an automated pull request does not guarantee compatibility.
- Group low-risk updates only when your team can still identify which advisory each change addresses.
- Keep a separate process for vulnerabilities in private packages or code paths that the dependency graph cannot represent.
How the alternatives compare with Anthropic OSS Scanner
| Decision question | Anthropic OSS Scanner | OSV-Scanner | Trivy | Semgrep / CodeQL | Dependabot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Can I run it on demand locally? | No; enrollment leads to periodic hosted scans. | Yes, as a CLI or Go library. | Yes, as a CLI. | Yes, through local or CI workflows, depending on setup. | Primarily through GitHub’s hosted repository workflow. |
| Does it match known dependency advisories? | It may identify them during an agent audit, but the report is model-generated. | Yes, using OSV records and affected-version ranges. | Yes, using cached vulnerability databases and ecosystem sources. | Not as its primary function. | Yes, through the dependency graph and advisory data. |
| Can it inspect application logic? | Yes, within the behavior its agents can exercise. | Not as a source-code vulnerability analyzer. | Not as a general source-code analyzer. | Yes, with rules and semantic data-flow queries. | No; its core function is dependency alerting and updates. |
| Are findings deterministic and independently reproducible? | Not guaranteed; Anthropic warns reports may be incorrect. | Generally yes for the same package and advisory data. | Reproducible with the same image, database, and configuration. | Repeatable with the same code, rules or queries, and configuration. | Alerts depend on the graph and advisory data at the time. |
| What privacy model applies? | The project is built online and scanned in an isolated, Internet-disabled VM. | Local execution is available. | Local execution is available; databases are retrieved and cached. | Local or hosted deployment depends on the chosen workflow. | Repository data is processed within GitHub’s service. |
The privacy descriptions above concern execution models, not a blanket security guarantee. Review each tool’s current documentation and your organization’s rules before sending proprietary code or artifacts to a hosted service.
A layered setup for an open-source project
A maintainable program separates fast feedback from deeper analysis. The following sequence avoids asking one scanner to cover every risk:
- On every pull request: run dependency extraction and advisory matching with OSV-Scanner, plus fast Semgrep rules. If the change builds an image, scan the resulting image with Trivy.
- On the default branch: run the complete supported-language CodeQL analysis on a schedule that fits repository size and CI capacity.
- Before release: rebuild the production image, scan it with Trivy, and archive the result with the immutable image digest.
- Continuously in GitHub: enable Dependabot alerts and update pull requests if your repository uses GitHub’s dependency graph.
- Periodically: if the project qualifies and the maintainers accept the hosted-build model, enroll in Anthropic OSS Scanner as an additional audit layer rather than disabling the deterministic checks.
Choosing by project profile
Library or command-line project with lockfiles
Start with OSV-Scanner in local development and CI. Add Semgrep for insecure API or input-handling rules. Dependabot is useful if the repository is on GitHub and maintainers want automated upgrade pull requests.
Service distributed as a container
Use OSV-Scanner for repository dependencies and Trivy for the final image. Add CodeQL or Semgrep for application logic. Scan the production image, not merely the builder image, because multi-stage builds can produce different package sets.

Operating-system image or agent
Make Trivy the image gate because OS-package coverage is central. Use OSV-Scanner where its package extraction supports your application dependencies, and use source analyzers for code-level flaws.
Small volunteer-maintained project
Favor tools that run locally and have low operational overhead: OSV-Scanner plus a small Semgrep rule set. Dependabot can reduce update work in GitHub. Treat Anthropic OSS Scanner as optional supplementary review, remembering that its reports are model-generated and require maintainer verification.
Handling findings without creating noise
Verify the affected component
Confirm the exact resolved package, image layer, or source path. A top-level version declaration can differ from the lockfile, and a vulnerable package in an image may be unreachable in the running service.
Separate exposure from severity
An advisory’s severity is not identical to your deployment’s risk. Check whether the vulnerable feature is enabled, whether an attacker can reach it, and whether compensating controls exist. Record that reasoning with the finding.
Choose the smallest safe fix
Prefer the vendor’s fixed version or a minimal patch that preserves compatibility. For a major upgrade, run regression tests and review release notes rather than accepting an automated update blindly.
Validate model-generated reports
For an Anthropic OSS Scanner finding, reproduce the claimed behavior in a controlled environment, inspect the proposed patch, and confirm that the issue exists in the project revision that was scanned. Do not merge a patch solely because an agent suggested it.

Common failure modes
- Only scanning manifests: this misses packages introduced by the final container image. Add an image scan.
- Only scanning images: this can hide source-level flaws and makes developer feedback arrive too late. Add pull-request analysis.
- Treating a clean advisory result as proof of safety: unknown vulnerabilities and logic bugs are outside database matching. Use source analysis and review.
- Ignoring database freshness: scanners rely on advisory data that changes. Cache databases for repeatability, but refresh them on a planned schedule.
- Failing builds on every low-confidence result: define severity, exploitability, and exception rules so developers can act on signal rather than bypass the gate.
- Trusting a proposed patch without tests: run the project’s tests and review behavior changes, especially when the patch spans public APIs.
Bottom-line recommendation
For a general open-source project, install OSV-Scanner first and make its dependency checks part of CI. Add Trivy when containers or operating-system packages are shipped. Add Semgrep for fast pull-request rules and CodeQL where deeper data-flow analysis is justified. Enable Dependabot when GitHub-native update pull requests fit your workflow. Anthropic OSS Scanner can add a periodic, model-driven perspective for enrolled projects, but its findings must be treated as hypotheses to verify—not as authoritative, human-reviewed proof.
