For most Steam Machine setups, choose a low-latency OLED monitor or TV, enable its game mode, and begin at 1080p. OLED gives you the closest modern combination of deep blacks, fast pixel response and compact size, but it does not reproduce CRT scanlines or phosphor motion on its own. A good LCD/VA gaming display is the better value when brightness, price or burn-in anxiety matters more.

If you also use original 240p/288p consoles, add a RetroTINK 5X Pro or OSSC scaler. Keep the source at 4:3 and use integer scaling or scanline processing instead of stretching the picture to 16:9. The display is only half of a CRT replacement; signal handling determines whether retro games look authentic, merely sharp or visibly distorted.

Start with the connection your Steam Machine actually supports

Valve’s current Steam Support documentation identifies HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 as the Steam Machine display interfaces. It also identifies 1080p as the system-default game resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes a display with a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort input, a usable 1080p mode and a low-latency game mode the safest starting point.

  • Output: HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 from the Steam Machine.
  • Input: The chosen port must accept the output without an adapter that changes timing or adds another conversion stage.
  • Mode: Look for a game or low-latency mode that disables unnecessary image processing.
  • Resolution: Set 1080p initially, then test a game’s own resolution options.
  • Retro source: If you are connecting an original console, verify that the display or an external scaler accepts its 240p/288p signal.

DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters can work, but each additional conversion creates another possible failure point. For a troubleshooting-friendly installation, connect the Steam Machine directly to the display whenever possible and reserve a dedicated scaler for legacy console inputs.

What a CRT replacement must reproduce—and what it cannot

A CRT combines several characteristics that modern flat panels separate: near-black blacks, phosphor glow, scanlines, analog softness, variable image geometry and distinctive motion behavior. A modern display can reproduce some of these traits through panel performance and processing, but no single setting turns an OLED or LCD into a physical CRT.

Contrast and black level

OLED pixels can switch off individually, so dark scenes have a genuinely black baseline and bright pixels remain sharply separated from it. This is the strongest reason to choose OLED for a compact retro-style setup. VA LCD panels generally produce deeper blacks than many other LCD designs, but their black level depends on backlight behavior and room lighting. In a bright room, the difference may be less obvious; in a dark room, OLED’s advantage is easier to see.

Motion and response

Fast pixel response prevents the smearing that can make scrolling sprites look muddy. OLED is particularly strong here. A fast LCD/VA display can still work well, especially with its game mode enabled, but panel response varies substantially between models and overdrive settings. Do not treat a high refresh-rate specification as a guarantee of CRT-like motion; refresh rate and pixel response are related but not identical.

Scanlines and phosphor appearance

A flat panel does not create CRT scanlines by itself. The OSSC Guidebook describes scanlines as the blank lines between portions of an image produced by a CRT display mode. To add a scanline-style appearance, use a scaler or software shader that deliberately inserts lines or darkens alternating rows. This is an artistic approximation, not the same optical effect as a CRT’s beam and phosphor structure.

Geometry and aspect ratio

Most classic console artwork was composed for a 4:3 frame. Stretching it to 16:9 makes circles wider, changes character proportions and can alter the perceived speed of scrolling. Keep 4:3 unless you intentionally want a widescreen presentation. A scaler or display with a “4:3,” “original,” or “aspect” control is more useful than a panel’s maximum refresh rate for this purpose.

Comparison of the practical alternatives

Option Best use Strengths Trade-offs Extra equipment
OLED monitor Desk-based Steam Machine and mixed modern/retro games Deep blacks, high contrast, fast response, compact 24–27-inch formats Higher purchase cost and a need to manage burn-in risk; no CRT scanlines without processing Optional scaler or shader for original low-resolution sources
OLED TV Shared-room or couch gaming Large image, strong contrast and convenient console-style use Viewing distance and integer scaling matter more; confirm game mode and suitable HDMI bandwidth Optional scaler for legacy consoles
LCD/VA gaming monitor Budget-conscious or bright-room installations Usually easier to budget, bright and readily replaceable Weaker black levels than OLED and no CRT behavior without processing Optional scaler; game mode recommended
RetroTINK 5X Pro Original 240p/288p consoles feeding a modern panel Dedicated handling for legacy signals, line multiplication and scanline-style processing Additional cost, cables and configuration; it is not a display HDMI display and short, reliable cables
OSSC Users who want hands-on control of line multiplication and aspect settings Configurable output, 4:3 handling and scanline presentation Some displays reject particular line-tripled timings; setup is less automatic HDMI display and a compatible source cable
Steam Deck OLED with dock Portable Steam gaming with occasional external-screen play 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800, up to 90 Hz and USB-C DisplayPort output Small built-in screen and a handheld workflow; not a drop-in desktop Steam Machine replacement USB-C cable or the official Docking Station for external displays

1. OLED monitor: the strongest all-round CRT substitute

Choose an OLED monitor when black level, response and a compact setup matter more than the lowest purchase price. A 24–27-inch panel around 1080p–1440p is a practical range for desk distance: 1080p keeps the Steam Machine’s default target simple, while 1440p gives desktop applications and modern games more room without making a 4:3 retro image excessively large.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to configure it

  1. Connect the Steam Machine directly through HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
  2. Set the operating system and display to 1080p first.
  3. Enable the monitor’s game or low-latency mode.
  4. Set the aspect control to 4:3 or original for retro software.
  5. Use integer scaling when the monitor or game offers it. If the resulting image is too small, choose a carefully controlled non-integer scale rather than stretching to 16:9.
  6. For scanline styling, apply a shader in the emulator or place an OSSC or RetroTINK 5X Pro between the original console and the monitor.

OLED’s self-emissive pixels do not automatically make old games look soft. Pixel-art edges can appear extremely crisp, sometimes more sharply than they did on a consumer CRT. A modest shader, scanline mask or scaler filter supplies the missing texture while preserving the panel’s contrast advantage.

Burn-in and panel-care decisions

OLED owners should treat static elements as a management issue rather than assume the panel is indestructible. Avoid leaving a paused game, desktop toolbar or static menu on screen for hours, use the panel’s automatic pixel-care functions, and let its compensation cycle run when the display requests it. If the Steam Machine will show the same interface continuously in a public or always-on installation, an LCD/VA panel may be the lower-risk choice.

2. LCD/VA gaming monitor: the sensible value choice

A low-latency LCD or VA monitor is appropriate when you want a light, replaceable display, high brightness or a lower entry cost. VA technology can provide convincing dark scenes, although black levels and motion behavior vary by model. Use the monitor’s game mode and disable aggressive smoothing, noise reduction and dynamic processing that can add delay or make pixel art look unstable.

When LCD/VA is preferable

  • The room is bright and sustained brightness matters more than absolute black.
  • The display will show static desktop content for long periods.
  • You want to spend less on the panel and put the remaining budget into a scaler, cables or additional controllers.
  • You prefer a conventional panel that is easy to replace after years of use.

LCD/VA will look clean and sharp with Steam games, but it will not reproduce CRT phosphor behavior without a shader or scanline processor. A good scaler can make the presentation deliberate; it cannot change the LCD’s underlying glow and response characteristics.

3. OLED TV: best when the Steam Machine lives in a shared room

An OLED TV makes sense for couch play, a living-room cabinet or a setup shared with other consoles. The larger panel turns 4:3 handling into a more visible decision: a correctly proportioned image may occupy only the center of the screen, while a stretched image fills the panel but distorts the artwork.

TV checks before purchase

  • Confirm that the intended HDMI input supports the Steam Machine’s HDMI 2.0 signal.
  • Verify that game mode is available on that input and does not disable the controls you need.
  • Check for a 4:3, original or just-scan aspect option.
  • Measure viewing distance. A large screen viewed too closely can make integer-scaled pixels look harsher; viewed too far away, scanline effects may disappear.
  • Ensure the TV remembers separate settings for the Steam Machine and other sources.

TV image processors often apply more enhancement than monitors. Game mode is therefore especially important. If the TV has no useful 4:3 control, let the scaler output a correctly framed image and keep the TV in a neutral aspect setting.

4. RetroTINK 5X Pro: the easiest dedicated scaler path

The RetroTINK 5X Pro belongs in the chain when original consoles or other native low-resolution sources are part of the room. It is an accessory, not a replacement display: the console feeds the scaler, the scaler produces an HDMI signal, and the OLED or LCD shows that output.

Why add a scaler

  • Legacy 240p/288p signals are not accepted reliably by every modern panel.
  • Line multiplication creates a timing modern HDMI displays are more likely to understand.
  • Aspect-ratio controls preserve 4:3 without relying on a TV’s inconsistent source handling.
  • Scanline-style processing can be applied before the signal reaches the display.

Use short, known-good HDMI cables and change one setting at a time. A scaler adds a configuration layer, so label the input and output cables and record the working mode. Keep the Steam Machine’s direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection separate from the original-console path unless there is a specific reason to route both through additional hardware.

5. OSSC: configurable line multiplication and scanline control

Choose an OSSC when you want direct control over line multiplication, 4:3 handling and scanline presentation. The OSSC Guidebook recommends Generic 4:3 for many retro sources. That setting is a safer starting point than forcing a widescreen mode and then trying to correct distorted artwork later.

Basic OSSC workflow

  1. Connect the original console to the OSSC using the appropriate source cable.
  2. Connect the OSSC’s HDMI output to the display.
  3. Select the input profile that matches the console signal.
  4. Set the aspect handling to Generic 4:3 unless the source is known to require another profile.
  5. Begin with a conservative line-multiplication mode that the display is documented to accept.
  6. Add scanline processing only after the image is stable and correctly framed.

Line multiplication is not universally compatible. If the display remains blank or reports an unsupported signal after enabling line triple, turn line triple off and retest. A lower multiplication mode that locks reliably is more useful than a theoretically sharper mode that the TV or monitor cannot sync to.

Keeping 4:3, integer scaling and scanlines correct

Use 4:3 as the default for original-era artwork

Set both the scaler and the display to preserve the source ratio. If both devices apply their own automatic correction, you can end up with double letterboxing or an image that is stretched twice. Pick one device to control aspect ratio and leave the other neutral.

Prefer integer scaling when the source permits it

Integer scaling enlarges each source pixel by the same whole-number factor. It keeps pixel edges uniform, but it may leave unused borders because the target panel’s dimensions are not always an exact multiple of the source. That empty space is preferable to unevenly sized pixels when a crisp, grid-like presentation is the goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat scanlines as a style choice

Scanlines can make a bright modern panel feel less clinical, but their strength should match the viewing distance and room light. Heavy dark lines can reduce brightness and hide fine detail. Start with a subtle setting, then adjust while looking at scrolling gameplay rather than a static title screen.

Steam Deck OLED: a portable branch of the decision

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display, 1280×800 resolution, refresh rates up to 90 Hz, less than 0.1 ms response time and a 1,000-nit HDR peak specification. Its USB-C port carries DisplayPort output. This makes it a compelling portable way to play Steam titles, but it is not a desktop Steam Machine replacement: the built-in screen is small, controls are handheld, and the external-screen experience depends on the cable or dock.

Using it with an external display

  1. Connect the Deck’s USB-C port to a compatible display cable or the official Docking Station.
  2. Choose a monitor or TV that accepts the dock’s DisplayPort-over-USB-C output path.
  3. Set the external display to its low-latency game mode.
  4. For retro software, preserve 4:3 in the game’s scaling settings or emulator and add a shader if you want scanline styling.
  5. Use the Deck’s built-in screen when portability is the priority; use the external panel when a larger image and seating distance matter more.

Valve explicitly describes the Deck’s USB-C connection as capable of driving a TV, monitor or even an old CRT with the right cables. A real CRT still requires compatible analog conversion and is a separate signal-engineering project; the practical modern path is USB-C DisplayPort to a digital monitor or TV.

Latency: what you can and cannot conclude from specifications

Choose the display’s game mode and avoid unnecessary frame interpolation, sharpening passes or dynamic contrast. Those controls can alter responsiveness even when the panel’s headline refresh rate looks excellent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no authoritative universal number that describes CRT-versus-OLED latency for this exact Steam Machine arrangement. Panel response, scaler processing, game frame pacing, output resolution and the display’s own pipeline all contribute. The Steam Deck OLED’s less-than-0.1-millisecond response figure is a Valve panel specification, not a complete end-to-end controller-to-photon latency measurement. Treat it as evidence of fast pixel switching, not a promise that every game feels identical to a CRT.

A practical installation procedure

  1. Inventory the sources. Separate the Steam Machine, original consoles and any handheld dock. Each may need a different input and scaling path.
  2. Select the panel. Choose OLED for contrast and response, LCD/VA for value, brightness or lower static-image concern, or an OLED TV for couch distance.
  3. Verify ports. Confirm HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 support for the Steam Machine and the correct HDMI or DisplayPort-over-USB-C path for a dock.
  4. Connect directly first. Run the Steam Machine straight to the display and establish a stable 1080p picture before adding any scaler.
  5. Enable game mode. Turn off processing that is not needed for games.
  6. Configure retro framing. Select 4:3 or original aspect and use integer scaling where practical.
  7. Add the scaler only for legacy needs. Put a RetroTINK 5X Pro or OSSC between an original console and the display when the source is not accepted cleanly or when you want line multiplication and scanlines.
  8. Test one game from each source. Check a static menu, fast horizontal scrolling and a dark scene. These reveal aspect, motion and black-level problems quickly.
  9. Document working settings. Record the scaler profile, output mode, display input and aspect setting so a later cable or source change is easy to reverse.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
No image from the Steam Machine Wrong input, unsupported mode or adapter issue Select the correct HDMI/DisplayPort input, return to 1080p and remove unnecessary adapters.
Image is wide or characters look stretched Display or scaler forced to 16:9 Set the source path to 4:3 or Generic 4:3 and disable automatic stretch.
Original console produces a black screen Display does not accept native 240p/288p timing Use a RetroTINK 5X Pro or OSSC and select a compatible line-multiplied output.
OSSC output is blank after line triple The display rejects that timing Turn line triple off, retest, then try a lower or different supported multiplication mode.
Retro picture looks too soft Non-integer scaling or excessive smoothing Enable integer scaling where possible and disable smoothing; add a restrained shader only if desired.
OLED shows a static menu for long periods Unmanaged static content Use screen-saving and pixel-care features, avoid leaving paused screens indefinitely, or choose LCD/VA for an always-on installation.
Motion looks smeared on LCD/VA Panel response or overdrive setting Use game mode, test the panel’s moderate overdrive options and avoid assuming maximum refresh alone will solve it.

Which option fits your priorities?

Choose OLED monitor if

  • You play at a desk and want one screen for modern Steam games and retro emulation.
  • Deep blacks and fast response matter more than minimizing purchase cost.
  • You are willing to use screen-care features and avoid prolonged static images.

Choose LCD/VA if

  • You need a bright, affordable and easily replaceable panel.
  • The display will show static interfaces for long periods.
  • You would rather spend the budget on a scaler, controllers or additional sources.

Choose OLED TV if

  • The Steam Machine is primarily a living-room or couch system.
  • You can control viewing distance and confirm 4:3 and game-mode behavior before buying.

Add RetroTINK 5X Pro if

  • Original 240p/288p consoles are part of the setup.
  • You want a relatively straightforward dedicated path to HDMI, line multiplication and scanline-style processing.

Choose OSSC if

  • You want hands-on control over line multiplication, Generic 4:3 handling and scanlines.
  • You are comfortable changing output modes when a particular display rejects a timing.

Choose Steam Deck OLED with a dock if

  • Portability is as important as a large external image.
  • You want Steam games on a 7.4-inch HDR OLED and occasional TV or monitor play through USB-C DisplayPort.

Final buying checklist

  • Does the display accept HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 from the Steam Machine?
  • Can you enable a low-latency game mode on the exact input you will use?
  • Does it preserve 4:3 without stretching?
  • Can the scaler or emulator provide integer scaling?
  • Will the room’s brightness and viewing distance suit the chosen panel size?
  • Are you comfortable with OLED static-image care, or would LCD/VA remove that concern?
  • If using original consoles, does your RetroTINK 5X Pro or OSSC output a timing the display accepts?
  • Have you tested the complete chain at 1080p before adding extra conversions?
