The most flexible replacement for a power bank with a permanently attached cable is a conventional USB-C Power Delivery (PD) laptop power bank with open USB-C ports and a separate, correctly rated cable. You can replace the cable, carry different lengths, connect USB-C or USB-A accessories with adapters, and choose a cable rated for the laptop’s actual charging power.

Choose the bank by its maximum output on one port, not by its headline capacity alone. A 65W model suits many ultrabooks, 100W or more is a safer class for larger USB-C laptops, and up to 140W PD 3.1 EPR is intended for the highest-power USB-C systems that explicitly support it. Current phones generally need only 20W to 30W.

The best alternative: an open-port USB-C PD laptop bank

A built-in cable is convenient until it is too short, damaged, incompatible with a device, or unavailable when you need a different connector. An open-port bank separates the battery from the cable: the bank supplies the negotiated USB-C PD power, while you select the cable that matches the port, wattage and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a bank that lists USB-C PD output (and PPS if your phone benefits from PPS), a single-port rating high enough for the laptop, and a second port if you need to charge a phone or earbuds at the same time. Verify that the laptop accepts charging through USB-C PD; a USB-C-shaped socket used only for data or display will not charge from a bank.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The practical trade-off is size. Higher-output banks usually weigh more than phone-only models, but they avoid the serviceability problem of an attached lead. A detachable cable can be replaced instead of discarding the battery, and you can carry a short lead for travel or a longer one for desk use.

Shortlist of alternatives and comparable options

The following specifications are manufacturer-stated figures. “Total” output can be lower on an individual port when more than one device is connected, so read the power-sharing column before choosing a model.

Anker Nano 10K retractable-cable model 10,000mAh; 15W total Retractable integrated USB-C cable Compact phone backup TechRadar’s 2025 roundup describes the convenience positively but says 15W is insufficient for power-hungry devices

The first row is the clearest alternative to a permanently attached lead: it provides laptop-class output while leaving the cable choice to you. The other rows show where integrated-cable designs sit on the convenience-versus-serviceability spectrum and help explain why a phone bank should not be treated as a laptop replacement.

How many watts your laptop actually needs

Use the wattage printed on the laptop’s original USB-C charger as the starting point. The bank must be able to provide that power on the port used for the laptop; its combined headline wattage is not enough if power is divided among devices.

Phones, earbuds and small accessories

Belkin states that 20W to 30W is generally enough for current phones. A 30W port can also cover many earbuds cases and small USB-C accessories. A 10,000mAh phone bank is sensible when the phone is the only priority, but its lower energy reserve and output make it a poor substitute for a laptop bank.

13-inch MacBook Air and similar ultrabooks

Around 60W covers many 13-inch MacBook Air configurations and Windows ultrabooks. A 65W bank gives a modest margin and can continue charging a second device when its power-sharing behavior allows it. Check the bank’s per-port figures: the Anker 537, for example, assigns 45W to USB-C 1 and 20W to USB-C 2 when both are occupied.

14-inch and 16-inch laptops, workstations and gaming models

Choose a 100W-class bank when the laptop’s supplied charger is 90W or 100W, or when you need usable charging while the computer is under load. Gaming laptops may still draw more power than a bank can provide, so USB-C charging can maintain the battery or charge slowly rather than replace the original high-wattage adapter.

Systems that support 140W USB-C PD

A 140W bank is appropriate only when the laptop explicitly supports USB-C PD 3.1 EPR at that level. The Belkin 25K is specified at 140W and 92.5Wh; it is aimed at 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro use and similar high-power systems. If the laptop’s documentation lists a lower USB-C input, buying a 140W bank will not make it charge faster.

Device category Useful bank class What to verify
Phone or earbuds 20W–30W USB-C output and the phone’s preferred fast-charge protocol
13-inch laptop or ultrabook About 60W–65W That wattage is available on the single port used for the laptop
14/16-inch laptop or USB-C workstation 100W or higher The computer accepts USB-C PD at the advertised rate
High-power USB-C laptop Up to 140W PD 3.1 EPR The laptop, bank and cable all support the same EPR profile

Choose the right USB-C cable

The cable is part of the charging system. A high-output bank connected through an under-rated lead may fall back to a lower power level even though the bank and laptop can handle more.

Cable marking Typical capability Use case
60W, 3A Up to 60W Phones, tablets, earbuds and lower-power USB-C devices
100W, 5A Up to 100W Full-speed charging for most ultrabooks and 100W-class laptop banks
240W, 5A EPR Required for 140W-or-higher USB PD 3.1 EPR output 140W banks and laptops that negotiate EPR power

Belkin’s guidance places phones and tablets in the 60W/3A category, most ultrabooks on 100W/5A cables, and 140W-or-higher EPR systems on 240W/5A EPR cables. Match both ends: USB-C to USB-C is required for USB-C PD laptop charging, and the cable’s rating must be at least as high as the negotiated power. A detachable cable is an advantage only when you carry a properly rated replacement.

When a separate cable is safer than an attached one

  • You can replace a frayed or bent cable without replacing the battery.
  • You can keep a short lead in a laptop sleeve and a longer one at a desk.
  • You can carry a 240W EPR cable for a high-power laptop and a lighter 60W cable for a phone.
  • You can isolate a cable fault: if the bank works with another lead, the battery does not need service.

Read capacity in watt-hours, not just milliamp-hours

Milliamp-hours describe charge at a nominal internal voltage and are not directly comparable across batteries with different cell configurations. Watt-hours are the more useful figure for estimating how much energy a laptop can receive. The UGREEN 67W model, for example, lists 20,000mAh and 72Wh; the Belkin 25K lists 25,000mAh and 92.5Wh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Energy is also lost as the bank converts its internal battery voltage to USB-C output. Anker says the A1637 loses 30% to 45% through battery cells and conversion circuitry, estimating that a 10,000mAh unit delivers roughly 5,500mAh to 7,000mAh to connected devices. Treat every capacity figure as a storage rating, not a guaranteed amount that reaches the laptop.

Use capacity to compare endurance

  • For a phone-only emergency kit, 10,000mAh is compact and usually easier to carry.
  • For an ultrabook and phone, 20,000mAh-class banks provide a larger reserve without moving into the highest-power category.
  • For a high-power laptop, compare Wh, output wattage and weight together; a large mAh number is not useful if the bank cannot sustain the laptop’s input requirement.

Travelers should also check the current airline and destination rules for lithium batteries. A 92.5Wh bank is close to common carry-on limits, so confirm the applicable policy before flying rather than relying on a general assumption.

Understand ports and power sharing

A bank’s maximum output normally describes one port under ideal conditions. Connecting a phone can change the laptop port’s output, and some banks reserve the highest-wattage path for one connector.

Two-port sharing example

On the Anker 537, using both USB-C ports changes the allocation to 45W on USB-C 1 and 20W on USB-C 2. That is useful for a laptop and phone combination when the laptop can accept 45W, but it is not equivalent to two independent 65W outputs.

Three-device arrangements

The UGREEN 67W model is specified for simultaneous laptop, phone and earbuds charging, while the UGREEN 145W model provides three-device charging through its integrated USB-C path, second USB-C port and USB-A port. Read the maker’s allocation table for the exact combination you plan to use. A bank may advertise a high total while assigning a smaller amount to each port once all three are occupied.

USB-A compatibility

USB-A is useful for older cables and accessories, but it is rarely the path for the highest laptop wattage. Use the bank’s USB-C PD port for the laptop and reserve USB-A for lower-power peripherals unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.

Recharge time and pass-through behavior

A bank that can charge a laptop quickly but takes all day to refill may not suit frequent travel. The UGREEN 145W 20,000mAh model is specified to recharge in about 1.5 hours when paired with an 80W-or-higher PD charger. That result depends on using a charger and cable capable of the stated input; a lower-power charger will take longer.

The UGREEN 67W model supports pass-through charging, allowing the bank and connected devices to be powered in the same setup. Pass-through can be convenient at a hotel desk, but it may reduce efficiency and is not a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s thermal and charging guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing models, record both the bank’s input rating and whether the required wall charger is included. A bank’s output wattage does not tell you how fast it recharges.

A step-by-step buying method

  1. Confirm USB-C charging. Read the laptop manual or charger label and verify that the computer accepts USB-C Power Delivery. If USB-C is data-only, a power bank will not charge it.
  2. Record the required wattage. Use the original charger’s USB-C output as the minimum target. Include extra headroom if you expect to use the laptop while charging.
  3. Select the power tier. Choose approximately 60W–65W for a typical ultrabook, 100W or more for a larger or performance laptop, or 140W PD 3.1 EPR only when the laptop explicitly supports that level.
  4. Check single-port behavior. Find the output for the exact USB-C port you will use and inspect the table for two- or three-device combinations.
  5. Compare Wh and physical constraints. Use Wh alongside mAh, then check dimensions, weight and the travel rules that apply to your route.
  6. Buy the cable separately. Select a 60W/3A, 100W/5A or 240W/5A EPR cable according to the required power. Make sure both connectors are USB-C for a USB-C laptop.
  7. Plan your second device. If a phone must charge at the same time, ensure the remaining port still supplies enough wattage for the laptop.
  8. Check recharge requirements. Match the bank’s input rating with your wall charger. For the UGREEN 145W model’s approximately 1.5-hour recharge claim, use an 80W-or-higher PD charger.
  9. Test before travel. Connect the laptop while it is awake, confirm that it reports charging, then repeat with your phone attached to the second port. This exposes power-sharing limits before you need the bank.

Which alternative fits each situation?

You own a light laptop and want a replaceable cable

Choose a conventional 65W USB-C PD bank such as the Anker 537 class, plus a 100W-rated cable. It balances laptop capability, phone charging and serviceability. Accept that simultaneous use may reduce the laptop port to 45W, depending on the bank’s allocation.

You carry a laptop, phone and small accessories

A 20,000mAh multi-port design is the practical middle ground. The UGREEN 67W model lists 72Wh, three-device charging and pass-through, but its attached cable means you give up the replaceability that defines the open-port alternative.

You use a larger laptop or need more than 100W

Move to a 100W–145W class. The UGREEN 145W model offers 100W on its integrated USB-C path, 45W on the second USB-C port and up to 33W on USB-A. If the laptop requires 140W over USB-C, select a 140W PD 3.1 EPR bank such as the Belkin 25K class and carry a 240W EPR cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need the smallest phone backup

Use a 10,000mAh phone-first bank. The Anker A1637 adds an AC plug and up to 30W output; older iPhones require a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. The Anker Nano 10K retractable model is even more cable-convenient but is rated at 15W total, making it a phone solution rather than a general laptop bank.

When a built-in cable is still the right choice

An integrated lead removes one item from a travel kit and is hard to forget. It is attractive for a phone-first setup, especially when the bank includes a plug or retractable cable. The UGREEN 67W and 145W models demonstrate that an attached lead can coexist with additional ports and multi-device charging.

The limitations are fixed length, wear at the hinge or exit point, and a single connector type. On the UGREEN 145W model, the integrated cable is the 100W path; if it fails, the bank’s other USB-C port remains available but does not provide the same stated output. Choose this design when convenience outweighs cable replacement and you are comfortable carrying a separate high-rated lead as backup.

Troubleshooting USB-C bank and laptop problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Laptop says “not charging” USB-C port is data-only, cable is unsuitable, or the bank cannot meet the laptop’s input profile Try the laptop’s documented charging port, use a 100W or 240W-rated cable as appropriate, and compare the bank’s single-port output with the original charger
Charging stops when a phone is connected Power sharing reduced the laptop port below its requirement Disconnect the second device or move it to the port specified for lower-power charging; check the allocation table
Charging is much slower than expected Under-rated cable, low bank charge, thermal reduction or a laptop drawing power while running Use the correct cable, recharge the bank, reduce the laptop load and retest while the computer is asleep
140W output is unavailable The cable is not a 240W/5A EPR cable, or the laptop does not support PD 3.1 EPR Replace the cable with a 240W-rated EPR model and confirm the laptop’s specification; do not assume a 140W label overrides the device limit
Phone fast charging does not engage The phone needs a protocol or PPS profile the selected port does not provide Use the bank port that lists the phone’s supported protocol and a compatible USB-C cable

Stop using any cable or bank that becomes unusually hot, has a damaged connector, swells, leaks or shows impact damage. Do not bend an attached lead sharply at its exit point, and keep the battery away from prolonged high heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most laptop-and-phone owners, buy an open-port USB-C PD bank and a separate cable: 65W for an ultrabook, 100W-class for larger USB-C laptops, and 140W PD 3.1 EPR only when the laptop and a 240W EPR cable support it. Compare Wh, single-port output and power sharing rather than mAh alone. Compact integrated-cable banks remain excellent phone conveniences, but a detachable cable is the more durable and adaptable alternative when a laptop is part of the load.
