Start with Brave Search if you want a free, privacy-focused service whose provider says it maintains a built-from-scratch index. Choose Kagi when you will pay for ad-free search and want results that combine anonymized traditional-index requests with Kagi’s Teclis and TinyGem indexes, both designed to surface more non-commercial publishing. Choose Ecosia when environmental funding and European search infrastructure are priorities, but check which provider is serving results in your market.
No search engine guarantees that every result comes from a small publisher. The practical way to find independent websites is to combine an engine’s index model with exact-phrase searches, exclusions, domain filters, and cross-checking on at least two services.
What counts as an independent search engine?
“Independent” can describe two different things, and confusing them leads to poor recommendations.
An independent index
A search engine has an independent index when it crawls, stores, and ranks web pages using its own infrastructure rather than simply returning another company’s results through an API. Brave says its index was built from scratch and that Brave Search does not rely on Bing for its independent results. Its April 27, 2023 announcement said that every web result was then served by its own index, after removing Bing API calls that had represented about 7% of query results.

That announcement is a historical milestone, not a current traffic or quality measurement. It reported approximately 22 million queries per day in 2023 and warned that image and video results were not yet covered by the independent index at that point. Treat those details as dated context rather than a promise about present-day coverage.
Independent ranking and business incentives
A service can also be independent in how it ranks or funds search, even when it obtains some documents from another index. Kagi’s model is an example: it sends anonymized requests to traditional indexes while also using its own Teclis web index and TinyGem news index. Kagi says those indexes crawl millions of domains and focus primarily on non-commercial, high-quality content.
Ecosia’s independence depends on the provider used for a particular search and market. Its documentation describes the European Search Perspective (EUSP) as an index built by Ecosia and Qwant in Paris, with its own ranking systems and the goal of creating European search infrastructure. The documentation identified France as the initial availability market and said expansion was planned. A result page in another country may instead come from Bing or Google, so Ecosia should not be treated as a single, universal index.

Quick recommendations by priority
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free search with a documented independent web index | Brave Search | Brave says its web index is built from scratch and that privacy is enabled by default. |
| Ad-free search and stronger small-web emphasis | Kagi Search | Kagi combines anonymized traditional-index requests with Teclis and TinyGem, which it describes as focused on non-commercial, high-quality content. |
| European search infrastructure and climate funding | Ecosia | Ecosia funds tree planting and climate projects, while EUSP provides an independent European index where available. |
| Critical research or fact checking | At least two engines | No provider material establishes a universal quality winner, so comparing independent results is safer than trusting one ranking system. |
Brave Search: the clearest free independent-index option
How its index works
Brave’s product material says that “Even supposedly ‘neutral’ or ‘private’ search engines rely on big tech for results” and presents Brave Search as a built-from-scratch alternative. Its help documentation says the independent index does not rely on Bing and that Brave does not collect personal information to profile searches.
Those statements make Brave the most straightforward choice when your definition of independence is “the provider operates its own general web index.” It does not mean every page is authored by a small publisher or that every query will outperform larger services. Index size, language coverage, freshness, and local search can vary by query.
Privacy and advertising
Brave describes Search as private by default. Its business model is ad-supported, with an optional Search Premium tier. The presence of ads does not by itself determine whether results are independent, but it can influence how much commercial material appears around the results and whether you prefer a paid, ad-free service.

Controls that help uncover smaller sites
Brave provides operators, quotation marks, site filters, Bangs, Discussions, and Goggles. Goggles are community-created ranking rules that can rerank or filter results. A Goggle designed for technical blogs, personal sites, or another niche can make the small web easier to discover than a default ranking page.
Step-by-step Brave workflow
- Begin with an exact phrase. Put a distinctive phrase in quotation marks, such as
“self-hosted photo gallery”. This reduces pages that merely contain loosely related words. - Remove dominant commercial results. Add minus terms for words that repeatedly bring shopping pages, large marketplaces, or corporate documentation. For example, append
-buy -coupon -storewhen those results obscure independent guides. - Restrict the source type. Use a
site:filter for a known community, university, nonprofit, or country-code domain. You can also search one domain at a time to see whether a claim is documented by an actual publisher rather than copied elsewhere. - Try Discussions. When the standard page is dominated by product marketing, Discussions can expose forum threads and personal technical writing. Check the author, date, and supporting evidence before relying on a post.
- Apply a Goggle selectively. Test a community ranking model on a separate query and compare it with the default results. A Goggle changes ordering; it does not verify that a page is accurate.
- Repeat the query elsewhere. Save the exact query and compare it with Kagi or Ecosia. Differences reveal which results are engine-specific and which sites are consistently visible.
Kagi Search: paid, ad-free, and designed for the small web
Its blended-source model
Kagi does not accept advertising. Its documentation says Kagi Search uses anonymized requests to traditional search indexes alongside the company’s Teclis index and TinyGem news index. Kagi describes Teclis and TinyGem as products of crawling millions of domains, with an emphasis on non-commercial, high-quality content.
This is a different kind of independence from Brave’s single-index positioning. Kagi is not claiming that every result comes from one Kagi-operated crawl. Instead, it combines outside coverage with proprietary indexes intended to improve relevance and expose publishers that commercial ranking systems can bury.
When Kagi is a better fit
- You want an ad-free results page and accept a paid service.
- You frequently search for personal blogs, specialist documentation, independent journalism, or other non-commercial material.
- You prefer a blended index that can fill coverage gaps while still adding Kagi-specific sources.
- You are willing to compare result provenance rather than equating “independent” with “one index only.”
How to test Kagi fairly
- Run the same quoted query you used in Brave without changing spelling or exclusions.
- Record which pages appear in the first ten results and mark pages that are personal, nonprofit, academic, community-run, or specialist publications.
- Look for repeated commercial domains. If a result is useful but overly promotional, refine the query with a narrower phrase or domain restriction.
- Compare Kagi’s unique results with the Teclis/TinyGem description. The presence of a less-commercial page is a discovery signal, not proof that the page is authoritative.
- Check the publication date, author identity, citations, and update history before using a result for a consequential decision.
Ecosia and the EUSP option
Why Ecosia belongs in this comparison
Ecosia funds tree planting and climate projects through advertising revenue. Its provider documentation also describes EUSP, the European Search Perspective, as an index built by Ecosia and Qwant in Paris. EUSP uses its own ranking systems and is intended to provide a strong, independent alternative to existing search technologies.
Provider and market limitations
Ecosia may return results from Bing, Google, or EUSP depending on the provider and the user’s market. The EUSP documentation identified France as an available market and described expansion as planned. Therefore, two people using Ecosia in different countries may receive results from different indexes. If index independence matters to you, inspect the provider information for your location instead of assuming that every Ecosia result is EUSP-generated.
Recommended Free Tools
When to choose Ecosia
- Environmental funding is part of your search-engine decision.
- You are in a market where EUSP is available and want to test a European index.
- You accept that provider mix and coverage can change by country.
- You want an alternative that combines a climate-oriented business model with an effort to build regional search infrastructure.
Comparison: index, privacy, cost, and coverage
| Criterion | Brave Search | Kagi Search | Ecosia / EUSP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Index model | Provider says it operates a built-from-scratch independent index; its 2023 announcement described web results as 100% own-index. | Blends anonymized requests to traditional indexes with Kagi’s Teclis web index and TinyGem news index. | Provider-dependent: Bing, Google, or EUSP. EUSP is an independent index created by Ecosia and Qwant. |
| Small or non-commercial web | Goggles, Discussions, operators, and Bangs can help rerank and discover niche publishers. | Teclis and TinyGem are described as emphasizing non-commercial, high-quality content. | EUSP emphasizes trustworthy European content; coverage depends on market. |
| Privacy position | Private by default; Brave says it does not profile searches using personal information. | Ad-free model with anonymized requests to traditional indexes; review current privacy terms before subscribing. | Privacy-friendly goals are associated with EUSP, but the actual provider mix matters. |
| Advertising and cost | Ad-supported, with optional Search Premium. | Paid service with no advertising; the cited provider material does not give a current price. | Advertising funds tree planting and climate projects. |
| Important caveat | Brave’s 2023 milestone noted that image and video results were not yet served from its own index and that some regional or language queries could lag. | Blended results are not the same as a fully independent single-index service. | EUSP availability was documented as market-specific, initially France; verify your country. |
A repeatable workflow for finding independent websites
1. Define what “independent” means for the query
For a repair guide, you may mean an unaffiliated specialist who explains methods without selling a product. For local reporting, you may mean a community newsroom. For software documentation, you may mean a project maintainer rather than a reseller. Write that definition down before searching because it determines which results deserve attention.

2. Start narrow, then broaden
Use a distinctive phrase, a technical term, or a named protocol first. Broad queries such as “best camera” invite commercial pages. A query such as “open-source camera firmware” teardown gives the engine more context and makes independent documentation easier to spot.
3. Use exclusions deliberately
Minus terms are useful when a topic is saturated with shopping pages, affiliate roundups, job listings, or press releases. Add one or two exclusions at a time; excessive filtering can remove the independent pages you want.
4. Search by domain type
Try country-code domains, nonprofit domains, university domains, project-hosting domains, and a known specialist site. Domain type is only a discovery aid. A nonprofit can publish weak material, and a commercial domain can host excellent independent research.

- Identify the author or organization.
- Check the publication and update dates.
- Look for primary documents, data, code, interview notes, or links to original reporting.
- Separate first-hand observation from copied summaries.
- Check whether the page is primarily an advertisement, a lead form, or a genuine editorial resource.
6. Compare engines for consequential claims
Run the same query on at least two engines. A page that appears only once may reflect a ranking decision or index gap. A page that several engines surface is easier to investigate, but repeated ranking still is not proof of truth.
Search techniques that expose the small web
Exact phrases and quoted fragments
Quotation marks are especially effective for finding a distinctive sentence, an error message, a standard name, or a phrase used in a specialist community. If the phrase is too exact and returns nothing, remove one word rather than abandoning the search.
Terms that signal first-hand material
Add words such as field notes, lab notebook, migration log, postmortem, source code, methodology, or case study. These terms do not guarantee quality, but they favor pages that explain how information was produced.

On Brave, Discussions can reveal conversations and personal writing that ordinary web results bury. Goggles can apply a community ranking model. Treat both as discovery tools: read the underlying pages and verify claims independently.
Privacy, advertising, and environmental trade-offs
Privacy and index independence are related but separate. Brave’s documentation connects its independent index with private-by-default searching and says it does not use personal information to profile searches. Kagi’s ad-free, paid model reduces the need to monetize attention through advertising, while its anonymized requests still mean that its blended architecture should be understood on its own terms. Ecosia’s environmental funding is a business-model consideration; its search provider can vary by market.
Do not infer that an ad-free page is automatically more accurate, that an independent index is automatically more private, or that an environmental mission guarantees independent results in every country. Evaluate each attribute separately.
Regional, language, and freshness caveats
Search quality is not uniform across languages or locations. Brave’s 2023 announcement acknowledged that some regional and language queries could lag and that image and video coverage was not yet fully independent. Ecosia explicitly ties provider selection to market, with EUSP availability documented for France at the time of its help material. Kagi’s blended approach can help fill gaps, but its result mix may differ substantially from a single-index engine.
For local services, laws, prices, election information, or rapidly changing software documentation, add a location, date, version number, or country code to the query. Open the source page and confirm its timestamp rather than trusting the search snippet.

How to choose in five minutes
- Need a free, own-index starting point? Use Brave Search.
- Want ad-free results and are willing to pay? Test Kagi with the same queries.
- Care about climate funding? Use Ecosia, then check which provider served the result in your market.
- Looking for specialist or personal publishing? Try Brave’s Discussions and Goggles, then compare Kagi’s results.
- Making an important decision? Use two engines, open several independent pages, and verify the underlying evidence.
Common failure modes and fixes
The results are all commercial
Make the query more specific, add quotation marks, exclude shopping language, and search for first-hand terms such as “postmortem” or “methodology.” On Brave, test Discussions or a relevant Goggle.
The engine returns too few pages
Remove one exclusion, shorten the quoted phrase, broaden the geographic term, or search a related technical synonym. A narrow independent-web query can fail simply because the wording does not match how specialists describe the topic.
The results differ dramatically between engines
That is expected when one service uses a single independent index, another blends multiple indexes, and a third changes providers by market. Compare page quality and evidence rather than assuming the most familiar result is the best.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou cannot tell whether a result is independent
Read the about page, ownership information, author bio, corrections policy, and disclosures. Check whether the article links to original material and whether its recommendations are tied to sales. Search the author’s name and the site’s archive to see whether it publishes consistently on the subject.
Bottom line
Brave Search is the strongest first recommendation for a free service with a clearly documented independent web index. Kagi is the better fit for readers who prioritize ad-free search and a deliberate emphasis on non-commercial pages, even though its architecture blends external and proprietary sources. Ecosia is compelling when environmental funding or European search infrastructure matters, but its index independence depends on the user’s market. For dependable discovery of the independent web, use precise queries, inspect pages critically, and compare at least two engines for claims that matter.
