The best setup for volcanic ash is a mechanical HEPA or high-quality pleated-filter purifier sized by its smoke CADR. Vog is more complicated: it can contain fine PM2.5 particles plus sulfur dioxide (SO₂), so homes close to an eruptive vent should use a purifier with both particle filtration and a substantial activated-carbon or other acid-gas sorbent stage.
No consumer standard currently ranks purifier models by SO₂ removal. Choose by measurable capacity, filter construction, safe emissions and operating cost rather than by a model name or a vague “volcano” label.
Which type of purifier fits your hazard?
Ash and vog are not interchangeable problems. Ash is mainly solid material suspended in air. Vog (volcanic smog) may contain PM2.5 and sulfur dioxide, along with other volcanic gases. Your distance from the vent, the current advisory and the room you are protecting determine whether particle filtration alone is enough.

| Situation | Minimum useful configuration | When to add gas media | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible or forecast volcanic ash, with little or no gas concern | Mechanical HEPA or pleated particle filter with a high smoke CADR | Not essential for the ash itself | It will not remove gases, and it works only in the room where it operates |
| Vog in an area away from the vent, with low SO₂ readings | HEPA or equivalent mechanical filtration sized for PM2.5 | Useful if sulfur odors or SO₂ advisories occur | Follow local air-quality guidance rather than relying on odor as a measurement |
| Home or workplace close to an eruptive vent, or substantial SO₂ exposure | HEPA particle stage plus a deep activated-carbon or other acid-gas sorbent stage | Required for the gas portion of the hazard | Consumer carbon performance varies greatly; CADR does not rate gas removal |
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health and USGS fact sheet puts the distinction plainly: “People living close to the volcano are exposed to both SO₂ and PM₂.₅, so they may want to seek protection by using a specialized air cleaner which has both a HEPA (PM₂.₅) filter and an acid gas (SO₂) filter.” Farther from a vent, HEPA-only filtration may be adequate when SO₂ is not substantial.

What volcanic ash and vog contain
Volcanic ash is a particle-load problem
Ash consists of small fragments of volcanic rock and glass. The finest fraction can remain airborne and enter the deepest parts of the respiratory system. A purifier cannot stop ash that is continually entering through open windows, doors or outside-air intakes, but a correctly sized mechanical filter can reduce the concentration in a closed room.
Large ash deposits also shorten filter life. A filter that looks gray, becomes visibly loaded or causes a noticeable airflow drop needs attention even if the normal replacement interval has not arrived.
Vog combines particles and gases
Vog can carry PM2.5 while sulfur dioxide remains in the air as a gas. A HEPA or pleated filter captures particles; it does not, by itself, capture SO₂. Activated carbon and specialized acid-gas sorbents work by adsorbing or chemically reacting with gases. The quantity, depth and formulation of that media matter more than the presence of a thin black sheet in a filter cartridge.

A purifier can therefore reduce exposure without making a room gas-free. If an advisory calls for evacuation or avoiding outdoor air, filtration is not a substitute for that instruction.
Size a purifier by smoke CADR
The two-thirds rule
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 cleaner-air guidance recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. Calculate the floor area, multiply by 0.67 and use that as the minimum smoke CADR, generally expressed in cubic feet per minute (cfm).

| Room dimensions | Area | Minimum smoke CADR using 0.67 × area | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 12 ft | 120 sq ft | About 80 cfm | Choose at least 80 cfm; more gives faster clearing |
| 12 × 15 ft | 180 sq ft | About 120 cfm | Use a unit rated around 120 cfm or higher |
| 15 × 20 ft | 300 sq ft | About 200 cfm | Consider a higher-capacity unit or two units |
| 20 × 25 ft open living area | 500 sq ft | About 335 cfm | Multiple units may distribute airflow better than one small appliance |
Use the smoke CADR, not a dust or pollen number, because smoke particles are the closest commonly published CADR category to fine ash and PM2.5. If a product publishes only a maximum airflow or an unverified “coverage” figure, you cannot reliably convert it to the EPA sizing rule.
Adjust for ceilings and open plans
The rule assumes a conventional room with an approximately 8-foot ceiling. A room with a 12-foot ceiling contains 50 percent more air than an otherwise identical 8-foot room, so select additional capacity or add another purifier. Open-plan homes, rooms connected by wide openings and spaces with frequent door traffic similarly need more total CADR than a single enclosed-room calculation suggests.
Place units where people spend time, and do not hide the intake behind furniture or curtains. If two rooms are separated by a closed door, size and operate a purifier in each room; air from one appliance does not automatically clean the other.
Ash-specific air-change guidance
EPA volcanic-ash guidance says a portable room filter may remove particles when it is sized to filter the room’s air volume two or three times per hour. This is a useful cross-check when you know the room volume: multiply floor area by ceiling height, then choose equipment whose published airflow can provide roughly two to three room volumes per hour. The smoke-CADR rule is easier for most shoppers, while the air-volume approach highlights why high ceilings require extra capacity.
Evaluate the filter stack
Mechanical particle filtration
Prefer a purifier that clearly identifies a HEPA-designated filter or a mechanical pleated filter. EPA identifies HEPA and other pleated mechanical filters as appropriate for trapping smoke particles. Look for a replaceable element with a sealed installation path so air cannot simply bypass the filter around its frame.

Do not infer performance from the word “HEPA-like,” a washable screen or a coarse pre-filter. A pre-filter can protect the main element from large ash, but it is not a substitute for the fine-particle stage.
Activated carbon and acid-gas media
For SO₂, seek a substantial bed of activated carbon or a media cartridge specifically described for acid gases. More carbon, greater bed depth and a longer contact path generally provide more useful capacity than a very thin impregnated sheet. Product literature should state the media type and quantity; if it does not, treat gas claims as unverified.
There is no widely used consumer CADR rating for gas removal. A high smoke CADR tells you about particle-cleaning throughput, not how much SO₂ a carbon bed can hold. Gas capacity is exhausted as the sorbent fills, and manufacturers rarely publish comparable breakthrough tests for household units. Replace gas media according to the maker’s schedule and sooner if odors return during an active episode.
Avoid ozone-producing designs
EPA’s official air-cleaner guidance states: “Do not use ozone generators in occupied spaces.” Avoid standalone ozone generators and be cautious with ionizers, photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators and UV-related features when they do not demonstrate effective particle removal or may create ozone. Ozone is itself an airway irritant and is not a safe solution to vog.
If a purifier includes an ionization feature, leave it off unless independent emissions documentation demonstrates that the device meets the applicable safety limit. A simple mechanical design is easier to evaluate and maintain.

Set up and run a purifier during an ash or vog episode
- Select a refuge room. Choose an enclosed bedroom or living room where occupants can spend the most time. Close windows, exterior doors and fireplace dampers.
- Control outside-air entry. Turn off or close outside-air vents during peak vog when local authorities advise doing so. Do not disable required combustion-air or safety systems without professional guidance.
- Install filters correctly. Confirm the airflow arrow, seat the filter tightly and close every access panel. A gap can let contaminated air bypass the media.
- Start before the room becomes smoky. Run the purifier continuously at a high practical setting while the episode lasts. Higher fan speed usually moves more air through the particle filter, but account for noise and bedroom use.
- Keep doors managed. Keep the refuge-room door closed when outdoor air is poor. If you need to clean several rooms, move the purifier only after the first room has had adequate operating time, or use multiple units.
- Monitor the filter and airflow. Inspect for ash loading, unusual noise and reduced output. Replace a loaded filter rather than waiting for a calendar reminder.
- Resume ventilation carefully. When official conditions improve, ventilate according to local guidance. Do not open windows solely because an odor has faded; gas and particles can change independently.
Protect the room from ash before the purifier works
Filtration is most effective when you reduce the amount of ash entering the room. Keep windows and doors closed during ashfall, seal obvious drafts where practical and avoid unnecessary traffic in and out. Remove contaminated outer clothing before entering the clean room and keep settled ash from being tracked across floors.
Clean without re-aerosolizing ash
Do not dry sweep or use a conventional vacuum on loose ash. EPA volcanic-ash guidance warns that disturbing deposits can increase airborne particles and recommends a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter when vacuuming is necessary. Dampen surfaces first where appropriate, collect ash gently and follow local disposal instructions. Wear a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator during cleanup; a mask protects the person wearing it but does not clean the room.
Use the home HVAC system when it is suitable
MERV 13 or higher
EPA’s 2022 guidance recommends a MERV 13 or higher filter in a forced-air HVAC system when the equipment can handle the added resistance. Check the furnace or air-handler manual, the filter-size requirement and the manufacturer’s airflow limits before upgrading. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow or stress the system.
HVAC filtration operates only while the system fan runs. Continuous-fan operation may improve particle removal during an episode, but confirm that the equipment is designed for that duty and that outdoor-air dampers are not bringing in contaminated air. HVAC filtration is especially useful for several connected rooms, while a portable purifier can provide higher local CADR in a closed refuge room.

DIY MERV 13 air cleaners
EPA identifies DIY air cleaners built with MERV 13 filters as a lower-cost option when portable units are unavailable or unaffordable. They can provide particle filtration, but construction quality, fan safety, sealing and noise vary. A DIY unit does not automatically provide SO₂ removal; MERV 13 is a particle filter, so a separate sorbent stage would be needed for gases. Keep the assembly stable, ensure the fan motor is rated for continuous operation and inspect filters frequently during heavy ashfall.

Compare practical configurations
| Configuration | Best use | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| HEPA or pleated portable purifier | Ash and PM2.5 in one enclosed room | Simple, measurable smoke CADR; no gas-media upkeep | Does not remove SO₂; limited to its room and airflow |
| HEPA plus thin carbon sheet | Light odors with modest gas concern | Adds some sorbent without much extra size | Usually little gas capacity; no standardized SO₂ rating |
| HEPA plus deep carbon or acid-gas cartridge | Vog near a vent or recurring SO₂ exposure | Addresses both particle and gas components | Heavier, costlier media; capacity depends on media quantity and replacement timing |
| Forced-air HVAC with MERV 13 or higher | Several connected rooms | Uses existing ductwork and can treat a larger area | Runs only with the fan; system must tolerate the filter; typically no SO₂ control |
| DIY MERV 13 cleaner | Budget particle control or emergency backup | Uses widely available filters and a fan | Variable sealing and safety; no inherent gas filtration |
Buying checklist for a volcanic-air purifier
- Smoke CADR: At least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet; increase capacity for high ceilings and open plans.
- Particle media: A clearly identified HEPA or mechanical pleated filter with a replaceable part.
- Gas media: For significant SO₂, look for a deep activated-carbon or acid-gas sorbent stage and a stated media quantity.
- Ozone emissions: Prefer a mechanical unit without ozone-generating features; keep ionization or similar modes disabled unless emissions are documented.
- Operating noise: Check noise at the fan setting that delivers the required CADR, not only the quietest mode.
- Filter availability: Confirm that particle and carbon replacements are sold for your region and that you can obtain them during an extended event.
- Energy use: Continuous high-speed operation can consume materially more electricity than low speed; compare the rated wattage at the setting you will actually use.
- Room strategy: Decide whether you need one closed-room refuge, several bedrooms or an open-plan area before choosing a single large unit.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
The purifier is noisy or airflow has fallen
Inspect the pre-filter and main filter for ash loading, verify that no intake or outlet is blocked and check that the filter is installed in the correct direction. Replace clogged media. Running a smaller unit at maximum speed to compensate for an undersized room can be louder and less effective than using additional capacity.
Particles improve but sulfur odor remains
This pattern indicates that the particle stage is working while the gas problem is not being addressed. Confirm that the unit actually contains activated carbon or acid-gas media, that the cartridge is not exhausted and that outside air is not entering through open windows, vents or door gaps. A HEPA-only purifier cannot be upgraded into an SO₂ cleaner by washing its filter.
Air quality worsens when the purifier is running
Turn off any ionizer, ozone, hydroxyl or similar optional feature and ventilate only when official conditions permit. If an ozone-generating device was used in an occupied room, leave the area and follow local health guidance. Replace damaged filters and check for ash being blown from an improperly seated cartridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no published CADR
Ask the manufacturer for a smoke CADR measured under a recognized test method, or choose a different unit. A marketing claim such as “cleans 1,000 square feet” is not enough to apply the EPA sizing rule, particularly in an open-plan home or a room with a high ceiling.
Health limits and when filtration is not enough
Air cleaners supplement source control and ventilation decisions; they do not make outdoor air safe or remove every pollutant. Follow local ash, SO₂ and vog advisories, close outside-air intakes when authorities advise it and limit strenuous activity during poor conditions.
People with asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease, children, older adults and pregnant people may be more vulnerable to smoke and volcanic gases. Seek medical care for serious or worsening breathing trouble, chest pain, confusion, fainting or symptoms that do not improve after moving to cleaner air. During ash cleanup, use a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator as recommended by Hawaiʻi health authorities. A mask is personal protection, not a replacement for indoor filtration or evacuation instructions.
Bottom-line selection
For ash or distant vog, buy the highest-smoke-CADR mechanical HEPA or pleated-filter purifier you can size correctly for the refuge room, then run it continuously during the episode. For homes close to a vent or under substantial SO₂ exposure, choose that particle capacity plus a genuinely substantial activated-carbon or acid-gas stage; do not treat a thin odor filter as proof of gas protection. Keep contaminated air out, maintain filters before they load, and use local health advisories to decide when staying indoors is insufficient.
