For live microphone effects during a stream, Voicemod is the clearest fit in the official documentation reviewed here. It describes real-time voice changing and provides an OBS setup guide. For text-to-speech narration or changing a recorded clip, ElevenLabs documents those workflows, but the reviewed pages do not show it operating as a live virtual microphone in OBS. These are different jobs, so choose based on whether you need to change what you say live or prepare audio in advance.
Which kind of AI voice tool do you need?
A live voice changer processes your microphone as you speak and routes the altered audio to your streaming software. Text-to-speech generates spoken audio from text; a recorded-audio voice changer transforms an uploaded clip or a recording made in an app. A tool that can change a file is not automatically a live microphone effect.
- Live character voice or microphone effects: look for a virtual microphone and a documented route into OBS or your streaming app.
- Prepared narration: use text-to-speech to create a voice track from a script.
- Edited clips: use a voice changer that accepts recorded or uploaded audio, then add the result to your production.

- Speak and check OBS’s audio meter. If the meter does not move, confirm the selected device in both Voicemod and OBS, and check that the microphone is not muted or being captured twice.
- Make a short test recording or private stream before going live. Listen for the processed voice, soundboard audio, and any doubled or echoing microphone signal.
Voicemod describes its operation as low-resource and minimal-latency. Those are vendor claims; the reviewed sources do not provide independent latency measurements or a controlled audio-quality comparison. Actual results can depend on the computer, audio routing, selected effects, and stream setup.
A Stream Deck is optional: Voicemod says it integrates with the controller, but the OBS guide’s virtual-microphone route does not make one a prerequisite. Check compatibility and current availability for any hardware before buying it.

Audio checks before you stream
- Confirm the actual input: select the virtual microphone in the software receiving your voice, then verify that its meter responds when you speak.
- Avoid duplicate capture: if the original microphone and the virtual microphone are both routed into the same mix, the result can sound doubled or echoing. Keep one intended voice path and test it.
- Check monitoring: headphones and monitoring settings can prevent speaker feedback. If you hear a delayed copy of yourself, check both the voice app’s monitoring and OBS’s audio monitoring configuration.
- Test effect levels: listen for intelligibility and balance between speech and soundboard audio. A dramatic effect may be less suitable when viewers need to understand instructions or conversation.
- Make a test recording: playback is a more reliable final check than judging only from the live meter. Confirm the processed signal is present and that desktop audio or alerts are not masking it.
Separate need: keeping prerecorded video live on YouTube
