For most home bakers, the Hamilton Beach 7 Speed Stand Mixer 4 Quart (63387) is the sensible low-cost choice. It has a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, 300-watt motor, seven speeds, planetary mixing, and the three attachments needed for bread dough, cakes, cookies, and whipped mixtures. Hamilton Beach lists it at $126.99 in 2026.

Choose the Cuisinart Precision Master SM-50 if you want a larger 5.5-quart bowl and finer speed control for frequent baking. Choose the KitchenAid Artisan Plus KSM50 if the attachment hub and established tilt-head design matter more than minimizing price. For repeated, very large bread or cookie batches, the Bosch Universal Plus is the specialist option: Bosch Mixers says its bowl handles nearly 15 pounds of dough and up to 408 cookies per batch.

These are different kinds of “affordable.” The Hamilton Beach is a budget all-rounder, the Cuisinart is a value step-up, KitchenAid is an upgrade platform, and Bosch earns its higher cost and larger footprint through unusually high capacity. Wattage alone does not establish which mixer is stronger; manufacturers measure and design motors differently.

The capacity figures are not directly interchangeable. A cookie count, a dough weight, and a bowl volume describe different limits, and the Bosch Universal Plus figure should not be treated as the limit for every Bosch model. Bosch Home separately publishes Series 8 limits of 3.6 kilograms of cake mix, 3.0 kilograms of yeast dough, and 2.8 kilograms of bread dough.

How to choose an affordable mixer for all three jobs

Start with dough frequency, not the highest wattage

Bread dough places more sustained load on a mixer than cake batter or whipped cream. If you knead one loaf a few times a month, a compact budget mixer can be a rational choice. If you knead several loaves every week, bowl capacity, drive design, and the manufacturer’s stated dough limits matter more than a headline wattage number.

The Hamilton Beach’s 300-watt specification is not proof that it is weaker than the Cuisinart’s 500 watts. Wattage is a manufacturer specification, not a standardized performance ranking. Use it alongside the published capacity, controls, attachments, and your batch pattern.

Match bowl size to your normal batch

A larger bowl gives you more headroom for a double batch and reduces the chance that flour or frosting climbs out of the bowl. It also takes more counter and storage space. The 4-quart Hamilton Beach is aimed at everyday home quantities; the Cuisinart’s 5.5-quart bowl is a more comfortable step up for larger cake or cookie recipes. KitchenAid’s published nine-dozen cookie capacity is a manufacturer-specific result measured on speed 2, not a universal capacity standard. Bosch’s published dough and cookie numbers target a substantially different scale.

Check the tool set

For the three tasks in this guide, you need a dough hook, a flat beater or paddle, and a whisk. All four picks cover those functions, although the names differ: Cuisinart calls its flat tool a paddle, while KitchenAid lists both a flex-edge beater and a flat beater. A flex-edge beater can reduce scraping for some mixtures, but the supplied specifications do not establish a universal time saving.

Hamilton Beach 7 Speed Stand Mixer 4 Quart (63387): best low-cost all-rounder

What you get

Hamilton Beach lists the 63387 at $126.99 in 2026. Its package is straightforward: a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, 300-watt motor, seven speeds, planetary mixing, dough hook, whisk, and flat beater. Planetary action means the attachment rotates around the bowl while spinning on its own axis, helping it reach more of the mixture than a simple fixed-axis beater.

The manufacturer explicitly describes this model as handling cookie dough, bread dough, cake batter, and whipped cream. That combination makes it the most defensible starting point when budget is the main constraint and bread is an occasional task rather than the central purpose of the mixer.

Who should buy it

  • Bakers making one loaf or modest cookie and cake batches a few times a month.
  • First-time stand-mixer buyers who need all three basic attachments without paying for a larger platform.
  • People who want a conventional bowl-and-tilt-head workflow and do not need a specialty large-batch system.

Where its limits begin

The published information does not state a maximum dough weight, dimensions, noise level, or long-term failure rate. Do not treat the 4-quart bowl as equivalent to the Bosch Universal Plus capacity. For repeated stiff dough or large double batches, move up to a model with a larger published capacity rather than assuming the motor’s wattage will tell you how it behaves.

Cuisinart Precision Master SM-50: best value step-up

Why it costs more

Cuisinart displayed a reduced price of $229.95 when its 2026 listing was crawled. The SM-50 adds a 5.5-quart bowl, 500-watt motor, and 12 speeds, along with a chef’s whisk, dough hook, and flat paddle. The larger bowl is useful when a recipe approaches the practical limit of a 4-quart mixer, while 12 speeds provide more adjustment between slow incorporation and high-speed whipping.

The extra controls are most valuable to people who bake often enough to notice differences in mixing texture: gradual flour incorporation, controlled creaming, and a high-speed finish for whipped mixtures. They do not guarantee better bread results than every lower-wattage mixer, because no standardized comparative performance test is supplied here.

Best use pattern

  • Weekly cakes, cookies, frostings, or meringue-style mixtures.
  • Moderate bread use where the 5.5-quart bowl offers useful headroom.
  • Households that want a step up from a budget mixer without moving to a premium attachment ecosystem.

Buying cautions

The displayed $229.95 was a reduced price at the time of the 2026 crawl, so treat it as a time- and region-sensitive figure rather than a permanent list price. Confirm the current package contents and price before purchase. The supplied specifications do not state dimensions, maximum dough weight, noise, or durability.

KitchenAid Artisan Plus KSM50: best upgrade for general baking

What distinguishes it

KitchenAid lists a stainless bowl, flex-edge beater, dough hook, wire whisk, and flat beater. Its attachment hub is the main reason to consider it as an upgrade: the mixer is part of a broader platform for optional accessories, while the tilt-head workflow remains familiar to many home bakers.

KitchenAid Australia publishes a specific capacity statement: cookie dough for up to nine dozen cookies on speed 2. Keep the qualification with the number. It is a manufacturer-published cookie capacity for that model and setting, not a promise that every recipe, ingredient temperature, or dough hydration will reach nine dozen.

Who benefits from the upgrade

  • Bakers who expect to use hub accessories over several years.
  • People who prefer a tilt-head design that exposes the bowl and tools for loading and scraping.
  • Users who make larger cookie batches and want a published nine-dozen capacity reference.

Why it is not the default budget pick

The purchase price is materially above the Hamilton Beach and the displayed Cuisinart price, so this is an upgrade rather than the automatic affordable recommendation. The supplied specifications do not provide its wattage, speed count, dimensions, or a maximum bread-dough weight. Tom’s Guide reported testing the Artisan Plus with white bread dough, vanilla cake, and whipped cream; that is one publication’s testing context, not a universal laboratory result or a long-term durability study.

Bosch Universal Plus: best for large bread or cookie batches

Capacity that changes the decision

Bosch Mixers states that the Universal Plus bowl holds nearly 15 pounds of dough and up to 408 cookies per batch. Those figures put it in a different category from a compact mixer intended for occasional bread. If you regularly mix multiple loaves, large holiday cookie batches, or production-sized quantities at home, capacity can save more time than an extra speed setting.

Different bowl-and-drive workflow

The Universal Plus uses a bowl-and-drive layout that differs from a conventional tilt-head mixer. That design affects how you add ingredients, attach tools, scrape the bowl, and store the machine. It can be a strong fit for a baker who plans around large batches, but it is less intuitive if you expect the familiar tilt-head arrangement. Check the available counter and storage area before buying; an exact footprint is not stated in the supplied specifications.

Do not generalize Bosch capacity across models

Bosch Home publishes separate Series 8 limits of 3.6 kilograms of cake mix, 3.0 kilograms of yeast dough, and 2.8 kilograms of bread dough. Those figures illustrate why you must identify the exact Bosch model and line. They should not be substituted for the Universal Plus figures or presented as a single limit for every Bosch mixer.

Which mixer fits your baking pattern?

Your normal routine Most sensible choice Reason Trade-off
One loaf and small cake or cookie batches a few times per month Hamilton Beach 63387 Lowest listed price, 4-quart bowl, and all three core tools Less published capacity information for heavy dough; smaller bowl
Several cakes or cookie batches each week and moderate bread use Cuisinart SM-50 5.5-quart bowl and 12-speed control Higher displayed price; promotion may change
General baking plus interest in hub accessories KitchenAid Artisan Plus KSM50 Attachment hub, tilt-head workflow, and published nine-dozen cookie capacity Costs materially more than the budget options
Repeated large bread batches or very large cookie runs Bosch Universal Plus Nearly 15 pounds of dough and up to 408 cookies per published batch capacity Different layout, larger-scale workflow, and no supplied price or dimensions

How to use a stand mixer for each dough type

Bread dough

  1. Fit the dough hook and lock the bowl or head according to the model’s instructions.
  2. Add ingredients in the recipe’s stated order. Start at the lowest speed so flour does not scatter.
  3. Increase only as needed to bring the dough together, then knead at the speed recommended by the manufacturer and recipe. Do not infer a safe speed from wattage alone.
  4. Stop to inspect the dough if it climbs the hook, the motor sounds strained, or the mixture remains dry. Scrape down only with the mixer switched off.
  5. Respect the exact model’s published dough limit. The Bosch Universal Plus and Bosch Series 8 figures demonstrate why model-specific limits matter.

Cake batter and frosting

  1. Use the flat beater or paddle, not the dough hook.
  2. Begin slowly when adding flour or powdered sugar, then move to a medium setting for creaming and blending.
  3. Scrape the bowl with the mixer stopped if ingredients collect on the sides.
  4. Use the whisk only for mixtures that benefit from air incorporation, such as whipped cream or similar light mixtures.

Cookies

  1. Use the flat beater or paddle to cream fat and sugar and combine the dough.
  2. Add dry ingredients gradually at low speed to reduce flour clouds.
  3. Stop as soon as the dough is evenly combined; prolonged mixing can change the texture of many cookie recipes.
  4. For very large batches, compare the model’s published capacity rather than multiplying a small recipe without checking the bowl and dough limits.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by wattage alone

A 500-watt label on one manufacturer’s mixer is not automatically stronger than a 300-watt label on another. Look for a capacity appropriate to your batch, a dough hook, a paddle or flat beater, a whisk, and controls that suit your recipes.

Confusing bowl volume with dough capacity

A 5.5-quart bowl does not mean 5.5 quarts of bread dough. Dough expands, climbs hooks, and loads the drive differently from cake batter. Use a manufacturer’s dough-weight or batch-count limit when one is available; otherwise, stay conservative with stiff or heavily loaded dough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every included attachment is identical

“Flat beater,” “flat paddle,” and “flex-edge beater” describe related functions but not identical shapes. Confirm the exact accessory list for the regional package you are buying, especially when a retailer bundles a different configuration.

Ignoring counter and storage space

The supplied specifications do not give exact dimensions for these four models. The Bosch Universal Plus’s different bowl-and-drive arrangement is particularly important to measure in your kitchen. Check clearance for the head or bowl, the location of a wall outlet, and a storage place for the hook, beater, and whisk.

Treating a sale price as permanent

The Hamilton Beach $126.99 and Cuisinart $229.95 figures are listings observed in 2026; the Cuisinart figure was displayed as reduced. Regional pricing, promotions, stock, and included accessories can change.

What is and is not established about long-term ownership

The available specifications establish bowl sizes, published capacities, included tools, speed controls, and the listed prices where provided. They do not establish a comparative noise ranking, durability ranking, or independent long-term failure rate for these mixers. Tom’s Guide’s Artisan Plus work with white bread dough, vanilla cake, and whipped cream is useful test context, but it is not a substitute for a multi-year owner study or a standardized test across all four models.

Final buying decision

Buy the Hamilton Beach 7 Speed 4 Quart (63387) if you need one inexpensive mixer for occasional bread and regular cakes or cookies. Move to the Cuisinart Precision Master SM-50 when a 5.5-quart bowl and 12 speeds justify the added cost. Choose the KitchenAid Artisan Plus KSM50 for its attachment-hub platform and tilt-head workflow, accepting that it is not the budget option. Choose the Bosch Universal Plus only when its very large published capacity matches your routine; for a casual baker, that scale and different layout are unnecessary.
