There is no universally best ADP alternative for a small business. The right choice depends on the payroll work you want handled, your HR and benefits needs, the support you expect, integrations, growth plans, and the total quoted cost. Gusto has the most product and pricing detail available for a direct look here; Paychex Flex, QuickBooks Workforce, OnPay, SurePayroll, and Rippling are also candidates to investigate—not a verified ranking.
How to compare ADP alternatives
Start with the work you need the service to do, then compare providers on the same requirements. ADP’s own small-business guide recommends considering payroll confidence, ease of use, support, value, and whether a service can adapt as a business changes. Because that guide is published by ADP, treat its descriptions of ADP and competitors as vendor claims, not an independent head-to-head evaluation.
- Payroll and taxes: Identify who calculates payroll, prepares and files tax forms, and makes tax payments. Confirm which tasks remain your responsibility.
- HR, benefits, and time: List the HR, benefits, insurance, onboarding, and time-tracking tools you need, and check whether they are included or sold separately.
- Support and onboarding: Ask what help is available during setup and migration, how you can contact support, and whether access changes by plan.
- Integrations: Verify that the exact accounting, time, and other business systems you use connect on the plan being quoted.
- Growth and coverage: Check support for your states and worker types, as well as how the service handles changes such as adding employees or expanding operations.
- Total cost: Request an itemized quote for your employee count and required services. Include add-ons and any support or implementation charges rather than comparing advertised starting prices alone.

How ADP compares on its own terms
ADP’s guide describes RUN as offering payroll automation, tax administration, onboarding, mobile access, benefits and insurance options, integrations, and support. It says the price depends on business size, payroll needs, and selected services, and requires contacting ADP for a quote. Treat these as ADP’s claims and request an itemized, current quote to compare RUN with alternatives on equal terms.

ADP’s 2026 guide labels its information accurate as of July 22, 2026. Its comparison page also includes ADP’s internal survey results: 96% of 1,281 RUN Powered by ADP customers surveyed said running payroll with ADP was easy; nine in ten said switching to ADP was quick; and three out of four said they spent 15 minutes or less running payroll. These are ADP-reported, non-independent results about ADP customers—not evidence that ADP outperforms alternatives.
Plan a switch before you choose
Switching should be part of the comparison, not an afterthought. Gusto says it can help transfer payroll data, and ADP says customers can switch at any time of year. Those statements do not guarantee a seamless migration for a particular business. Ask each provider what data it will transfer, what setup work you must do, how the transition will be timed, and who is responsible for confirming payroll and tax details.

- Write down your current setup: Document employee and contractor types, work states, pay schedules, benefits, time tools, accounting software, and tax responsibilities.
- Get comparable quotes: Give each provider the same employee count and requirements. Ask for plan inclusions, add-ons, support terms, and implementation costs in writing.
- Confirm tax and service responsibilities: Ask who calculates, files, and pays each tax obligation, and what you must review or submit yourself.
- Plan the transfer: Confirm what records will move, who handles setup, the intended effective date, and how you will validate the first payroll.
- Check the exact configuration: Before signing, verify that required features and integrations are available for your location, worker types, and quoted plan.
How to make the final choice
Choose the provider whose written quote and service terms best match your actual requirements—not the one with the broadest feature list or the lowest teaser price. A business already invested in QuickBooks may want to examine QuickBooks Workforce closely; a buyer seeking a combined payroll and HR service may want to assess Gusto or Paychex Flex; and a business interested in workforce automation may want to investigate Rippling. These are starting points for evaluation, not recommendations that establish one option as best for every company.
