The best iPad (A16) accessories are the ones that match its exact 2025 chassis and USB-C limits. Buy a case or keyboard folio that explicitly says it fits iPad (A16) or iPad 11th generation; use the included 20W adapter for normal charging in the US; add a USB-C Power Delivery charger only for a second location or replacement; and choose a hub for the ports you actually need. The iPad can drive one external display up to 4K at 60Hz, but its USB-C data connection is USB 2.0 (up to 480 Mb/s), so no hub can provide USB 3 or Thunderbolt speeds.
Start with the iPad (A16) compatibility checklist
Apple identifies this model as the 2025 iPad (A16). Retail listings may also call it the 11th-generation iPad. Those names describe the same accessory target; a listing that says only “11-inch iPad” is not specific enough.
| Specification | Published detail | Why it matters for accessories |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 248.6 mm | A case or folio must match the A16/11th-generation opening pattern, not just the screen diagonal. |
| Width | 179.5 mm | |
| Depth | 7 mm | Controls shell clearance and whether a keyboard folio closes correctly. |
| Connectors | USB-C and Smart Connector | USB-C handles charging, DisplayPort and USB 2.0; the Smart Connector enables a model-specific keyboard folio. |
| USB-C data rate | USB 2.0, up to 480 Mb/s | Sets the ceiling for storage transfers and USB peripherals, even when a hub advertises faster ports. |
| Battery | 28.93 Wh; up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback | Useful when deciding whether a powered hub or a second charger is worthwhile. |
Use the dimensions and connector positions as a screening test. A correctly sized case must leave the rear camera, speakers, microphones, USB-C port and Smart Connector unobstructed. A keyboard folio also needs its connector contacts to line up; a generic magnetic cover cannot provide that connection.
Cases and folios: choose by exact model, then protection
What wording to look for
Search for “iPad A16 case”, “iPad 11th-generation case” or “Smart Folio for iPad (A16)”. Read the compatibility line in the product details and verify that it names the A16 or 11th-generation model. Do not infer compatibility from “11-inch” alone: similar diagonal measurements can hide different camera, microphone, speaker or connector locations.

Apple’s 2026 US education price list names a “Smart Folio for iPad (A16)” at $79. That is a dated reference price from that document, not a guaranteed current price in every country or store.
Case features that affect daily use
- Opening alignment: Check cut-outs against the camera, microphones, speakers and USB-C socket. A tight opening can make charging cables difficult to insert.
- Smart Connector clearance: If you might use a connector-based keyboard later, the case must expose the three-contact area on the back edge.
- Drop protection: Look for a raised bezel around the display, reinforced corners and a secure closure. The available specifications do not establish independent drop-test results, so treat protection claims as the maker’s design claim rather than a measured guarantee.
- Stand positions: A simple folio usually offers a limited set of folds; a rigid shell with a kickstand can provide more viewing angles but adds bulk.
- Stylus storage: A covered holder or elastic loop prevents a compatible stylus from separating from the tablet. Confirm that the holder does not press on buttons or block the USB-C port.
- Weight and thickness: Rugged shells protect better against knocks but make the 7 mm tablet feel substantially thicker. If you carry the iPad in a sleeve or small bag, check the case’s external dimensions, not just the tablet dimensions.
Case types compared
| Type | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin folio | Desk, travel and light protection | Low bulk, quick stand mode, easy access to ports | Less corner and drop protection; fewer viewing angles |
| Rigid shell with cover | Everyday carrying and moderate protection | Protects the back and corners while retaining a cover stand | Heavier than a folio; hinge quality varies |
| Rugged case | Children, field work or frequent drops | Reinforced corners, raised bezel and secure grip | Maximum bulk; may interfere with some docks or keyboards |
| Keyboard folio | Typing and laptop-style use | Combines cover, stand, keyboard and usually a trackpad | Heavier and more expensive than a protective cover alone |
A five-minute fit check after delivery
- Confirm the model printed on the packaging or product page says iPad (A16) or 11th generation.
- Install the tablet without forcing any corner into place.
- Test the USB-C cable, speakers, microphones and camera with the case fitted.
- Open and close the cover, then try every advertised stand angle on a stable surface.
- If you plan to use a Smart Connector keyboard, attach it and verify that the contacts sit flat and the iPad recognizes it.
Keyboards: Magic Keyboard Folio or Bluetooth?
The integrated option is Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio, which uses the iPad’s Smart Connector and includes a trackpad. Apple’s accessibility documentation also states that the iPad can be operated with the Magic Keyboard Folio or an external Bluetooth wireless keyboard; both are sold separately. That gives you two fundamentally different setups.
Magic Keyboard Folio
- Connection: Smart Connector; no Bluetooth pairing or separate keyboard battery is required.
- Trackpad: Built in, useful for pointer-based editing and spreadsheet work.
- Protection: The folio design covers the front and back when closed, but its protection is not the same as a rugged shell.
- Viewing angles: The hinged design is intended for typing positions; check the available angle range if you often draw or use the iPad in portrait orientation.
- Weight: A keyboard, trackpad and protective panels add more weight than a cover, so include the folio in your travel calculation.
Choose it when you want the most seamless, laptop-like experience and are willing to carry a heavier folio. The supplied specifications do not establish an independent typing, trackpad or durability score, so those qualities should be judged from the return policy and hands-on fit rather than assumed from the name.
Bluetooth keyboard or keyboard case
A separate Bluetooth keyboard works when you want to use the iPad on a stand, keep a rugged protective case installed or switch the same keyboard between devices. A Bluetooth keyboard case can be more compact than a connector folio, but it introduces pairing, charging and compatibility variables. Check whether the keyboard’s case section explicitly fits the A16/11th-generation chassis; the keyboard protocol alone does not guarantee physical fit.
| Decision factor | Magic Keyboard Folio | Bluetooth keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Attach through Smart Connector | Pair in Settings > Bluetooth and manage the keyboard’s battery |
| Trackpad | Integrated | Only if the chosen keyboard includes one |
| Protection | Front-and-back folio coverage | Depends on the separate case or keyboard shell |
| Flexibility | Designed for this iPad model | Can move between compatible devices |
| What is established | Apple documents support through the Smart Connector | Apple documents support for external Bluetooth wireless keyboards |
Keyboard buying checklist
- Confirm the case portion names iPad (A16)/11th generation.
- Decide whether a trackpad is essential or an on-screen pointer is sufficient.
- Compare key travel, layout, backlighting and shortcut-row design from the manufacturer’s specifications; no universal typing-quality result is established here.
- Check whether the keyboard can be removed while the protective shell remains on the iPad.
- Verify charging method and battery life for Bluetooth models, and whether a charging cable is included.
- Test the return window: fit, viewing angle and wrist comfort are difficult to judge from photos.
Chargers and cables: the included setup is enough for ordinary use
In Apple’s US configuration, the box contains a 1-meter USB-C Charge Cable and a 20W USB-C Power Adapter. That covers normal charging, so a second charger is optional rather than a required accessory.

When a second charger makes sense
- Keep one permanently at a desk and another in a travel bag.
- Leave a charger in a second room or workplace.
- Replace a lost or damaged adapter or cable.
- Share a multi-port USB-C Power Delivery charger with other devices.
Apple says a higher-wattage USB-C adapter, including one supplied with a Mac laptop, can also charge the iPad. Higher wattage does not by itself prove a faster charging result: actual behavior depends on the iPad, charger, cable and current software. No independently tested charging-speed figure is established for a particular third-party product here.
How to choose a replacement or travel charger
| Specification | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output standard | USB-C Power Delivery (PD) | Provides the negotiated USB-C charging profile the iPad is designed to use. |
| Wattage | At least the included 20W for a like-for-like replacement; more is acceptable when shared with other devices | A higher rating is headroom, not a promise of a particular charging speed. |
| Ports | One port for a compact travel charger, multiple ports for charging several devices | Multi-port units may divide their total output when several devices are connected. |
| Size | Compact GaN or conventional design according to your bag and outlet access | Smaller chargers travel easily; larger units may offer more ports. |
| Cable | Confirm whether a USB-C cable is included and its length | A charger without a cable may not be a complete replacement for the in-box setup. |
| Safety | Reputable manufacturer and recognized safety certification for your region | Certification and build quality matter more than a large wattage number. |
Use a cable rated for USB-C charging from a reputable source, inspect it for fraying or bent connectors and stop using it if the plug or adapter becomes unusually hot. Do not buy a charger solely because its label claims an extreme wattage; verify PD support and the maker’s safety information first.
USB-C hubs, docks and display adapters
Apple describes the iPad USB-C port as supporting a variety of devices, including external storage, hubs and docks, keyboards, audio interfaces, MIDI devices and USB-to-Ethernet adapters. The port also carries DisplayPort video. With Apple’s documented adapters and display support, the iPad can mirror to one external display up to 4K at 60Hz.
Choose ports by the job
| Your workflow | Ports to prioritize | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor or television | HDMI, or a USB-C display connection | Display output is available through DisplayPort over USB-C; Apple documents one external display up to 4K/60Hz. HDMI resolution and refresh depend on the hub and display adapter. |
| Camera-card import | SD and/or microSD | Useful for cards, but transfers remain constrained by the iPad’s USB 2.0 ceiling. |
| External drive | USB-A or USB-C data port plus USB-C PD pass-through | A hub cannot raise the iPad port above USB 2.0 (up to 480 Mb/s). |
| Wired network | USB-to-Ethernet | Apple lists USB-to-Ethernet adapters as a supported device class; network speed also depends on the adapter and network. |
| Several bus-powered devices | USB-C PD pass-through and adequate power handling | Storage and other peripherals can draw power; an unpowered hub may disconnect devices. |
| Audio or music hardware | USB-A/USB-C data ports and, if needed, a separate audio or MIDI interface | Apple lists audio interfaces and MIDI devices among supported USB-C accessories. |
Understand the USB 2.0 bottleneck
The A16 iPad’s USB-C connector supports USB 2.0 data at up to 480 Mb/s. A hub may print “USB 3” on one of its sockets, but the complete path still passes through the iPad’s USB 2.0 controller. Large photo libraries, video footage and drive backups therefore take longer than they would on a USB 3 or Thunderbolt tablet. The hub adds convenience and port variety; it cannot change the tablet’s underlying data rate.
Display connection options
For a USB-C monitor, connect a compatible cable directly or through a suitable hub. For HDMI or VGA equipment, Apple documents USB-C Digital AV Multiport and USB-C VGA Multiport adapters. Confirm the monitor’s input, the adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate, and whether the hub needs external power. The documented maximum is one external display at up to 4K/60Hz; do not assume support for multiple independent monitors.

Safe hub setup
- Connect the hub to the iPad’s USB-C port with the hub’s attached cable or a cable rated for data.
- If the hub has USB-C PD input, connect the charger before attaching power-hungry storage or several peripherals.
- Attach one device at a time and check whether it appears in the Files app or the relevant audio, MIDI or network settings.
- For a display, select the correct monitor input and verify resolution and refresh settings on the display.
- Eject external storage in the Files app before unplugging the hub to reduce the risk of interrupted writes.
Hubs can become warm when driving displays, charging the iPad and powering peripherals simultaneously. Choose a model with clear heat-management information and avoid covering its vents or using it on soft bedding.

Travel and reading
Use a thin, exact-fit folio, the included 20W adapter and the in-box USB-C cable. Add a second PD charger only if you regularly leave the original at home or need a charger at work. A compact sleeve can prevent scratches without adding the permanent bulk of a rugged shell.
Study and office typing
Choose the Magic Keyboard Folio when an integrated trackpad, Smart Connector attachment and front-and-back cover matter more than minimum weight. If you already have a preferred keyboard, pair a Bluetooth model with a separate stand and protective case; this is more modular but requires battery management and a pairing step.
Photo and video field work
Select a case that protects corners while leaving the USB-C port accessible, then use a hub with the card slot you actually use and USB-C PD pass-through. Plan around USB 2.0 transfer speeds when estimating import time. If you also monitor footage, add HDMI or a USB-C display output and verify the single-display, 4K/60Hz limit.
Wired network or music equipment
Pick a hub with USB-to-Ethernet for a wired connection, or the USB and audio/MIDI ports required by your equipment. Supply power through PD pass-through when several devices are connected, and test the complete combination before relying on it for a performance or a network-dependent task.

Troubleshooting accessory problems
The case does not fit or blocks a port
Remove it and compare the product’s compatibility statement with the A16/11th-generation name. Check camera, microphone, speaker, USB-C and Smart Connector alignment. Do not trim a misfitting case; return it for one designed for the correct model.
The keyboard is not recognized
For a Magic Keyboard Folio, detach and reattach it so the Smart Connector contacts meet cleanly, then restart the iPad if necessary. For Bluetooth, charge the keyboard, open Settings > Bluetooth, forget an old entry and pair again. If a keyboard case fits physically but uses a different connector layout, it is the wrong model even if its keys work over Bluetooth.
A hub or drive disconnects
Reconnect the hub, then attach the drive by itself. If it works alone but fails with other devices, use USB-C PD pass-through or a powered dock. Remember that the iPad’s USB 2.0 limit affects speed, not just the number printed on the hub. Check the drive’s format and the Files app if it does not mount.
The external display shows no picture
Confirm the display input, reseat the USB-C or HDMI cable and test the display without other hub devices. Verify that the adapter supports the intended resolution and refresh rate. The iPad supports DisplayPort over USB-C and one external display up to 4K/60Hz; a hub cannot create a second independent display output beyond that documented capability.

Final buying checklist
- Does the listing explicitly name iPad (A16) or 11th generation?
- Are the camera, speakers, microphones, USB-C port and Smart Connector exposed?
- For a keyboard, do you want Smart Connector convenience and a trackpad, or Bluetooth flexibility?
- Do you already have the US-included 20W adapter and USB-C cable?
- If buying another charger, does it provide USB-C PD from a reputable, safety-certified maker?
- Which hub ports will you use: HDMI or DisplayPort, SD or microSD, Ethernet, USB data, audio or MIDI?
- Can you work within the USB 2.0 ceiling of up to 480 Mb/s?
- Will several peripherals need powered pass-through?
- Does the retailer offer a return period long enough to test fit, charging, keyboard connection and display output?
The compatibility-first approach avoids the most expensive mistakes: a case with the wrong openings, a keyboard folio that cannot use the Smart Connector, a redundant charger and a hub whose advertised ports exceed what the iPad can actually deliver. Match the accessory to the A16’s published dimensions, connectors and USB 2.0/DisplayPort capabilities, then buy only the features your workflow requires.
