OBS Studio is the most flexible choice for recording a desktop, window, game, or supported external capture-card source. Choose Camtasia if you want screen recording and tutorial editing in one product, or NVIDIA ShadowPlay if your priority is gameplay capture on a compatible NVIDIA system. The right choice depends on what you’re recording, the 4K format and frame rate you need, and whether you also need editing—not on a proven universal performance winner. No controlled head-to-head benchmark establishes one recorder as best in every setup.

What counts as 4K screen recording?

Before comparing recorders, decide which resolution you mean. TechSmith distinguishes Ultra HD (UHD), at 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, from DCI 4K, at 4,096 × 2,160 pixels. Its Camtasia guidance describes recording up to UHD on capable systems; that is not a guarantee of DCI 4K recording or a promise about every other recorder. See TechSmith’s 4K content guidance.

A 3,840 × 2,160 output file is not, by itself, proof that the screen was captured natively at that resolution. Upscaling a lower-resolution capture does not recover the detail of native 4K. For 4K at 60 frames per second (fps), the screen or game, recorder, encoder, display, and computer all need to support the intended workflow.

Best 4K screen recording software by use case

Software Best fit 4K and source considerations Key limitation
OBS Studio Flexible desktop, window, and game capture; streaming; supported capture-device sources Resolution and frame rate depend on the chosen encoder, computer, scene, and source. OBS documents external-device HDR capture on Windows when the device supports a 10-bit format such as P010. Meeting the published minimum system requirements does not guarantee smooth recording. Configuration and hardware routing matter.
Camtasia Screen recordings for tutorials or training, with editing in the same product TechSmith documents up to UHD on capable systems. For its stated true 4K/60 workflow, specific recorder, encoder, display, screen-refresh, and GPU conditions apply. 4K/60 is conditional, not an automatic result of setting an output canvas to 4K.
NVIDIA ShadowPlay Gameplay capture and instant replay on supported NVIDIA systems NVIDIA lists 2160p/4K among supported resolutions and advertises manual recording up to 4K HDR at 120 fps for gameplay. The cited high-resolution claims concern game capture; they do not establish ShadowPlay as an all-purpose tutorial editor.

OBS Studio: best for flexible capture

OBS Studio is the strongest fit when you need control over multiple sources or want one application for recording and streaming. Its published platform requirements include Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, macOS 11 Big Sur or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and Linux or Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland. These are baseline compatibility details, not a guarantee that a given computer will record 4K smoothly. OBS says CPU needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, fps, and scene complexity, and recommends starting with its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Read the OBS system requirements.

Camtasia: best when capture and tutorial editing belong together

Camtasia is a practical choice for training videos, software walkthroughs, and tutorials where recording and editing in one product are useful. TechSmith says Camtasia 2024 and later can record 4K plus 60-fps screen content, but its guidance specifies the conditions required for that result. Its general 4K article identifies the recorder’s upper capability as UHD (3,840 × 2,160) on capable systems and recommends a 3,840 × 2,160 editor canvas as the largest recommended canvas. Those are TechSmith’s product guidance, not an independent performance test.

NVIDIA ShadowPlay: best for gameplay on NVIDIA systems

ShadowPlay is oriented toward game capture. NVIDIA describes Instant Replay as saving the previous 30 seconds, and advertises manual recording up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps with minimal impact to performance. Treat the performance wording as NVIDIA’s claim, not an independently measured comparison with OBS or Camtasia. NVIDIA’s support page lists 2160p/4K among supported resolutions. Its documentation does not establish ShadowPlay as a replacement for a full tutorial-editing workflow.

Can I record my screen in 4K?

Yes, if the source and recording setup support the resolution you want. For a basic desktop capture, OBS is a flexible starting point; for Camtasia, use TechSmith’s stated requirements if you need its documented 4K/60 workflow. Check the dimensions of the captured source and resulting file, and confirm that the recorder is not enlarging a lower-resolution capture.

  • Choose the target: UHD is 3,840 × 2,160; DCI 4K is 4,096 × 2,160. Do not assume software that documents UHD capture also promises DCI 4K.
  • Check the source: a 4K file cannot contain native 4K screen detail if the captured display or game was rendering at a lower resolution.
  • Set a realistic frame-rate target: 60 fps takes more than selecting “60” in a menu; source refresh, encoder, and hardware have to keep up.
  • Allow for editing and storage: high-resolution source media can be demanding to play and edit. TechSmith recommends local source storage and notes that an SSD can help; it does not specify a universal drive capacity or speed.

Can OBS record in 4K?

OBS can be configured for high-resolution recording, but the available evidence here does not establish a single configuration that guarantees 4K performance on every system. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then check the selected output resolution and frame rate, encoder, source dimensions, and resulting recording. OBS specifically cautions that even a compatible system is not necessarily capable of recording or streaming well; CPU needs vary by encoder, resolution, fps, and scene complexity.

Check GPU routing on Windows laptops

On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, and Windows 11, a multi-GPU system runs OBS on one GPU at a time. If a game uses the discrete GPU while OBS runs on integrated graphics, Game Capture may fail, and performance issues can occur. Follow OBS’s GPU Selection Guide to select the GPU for OBS and align it with the game’s GPU use.

Recording HDR from an external HDMI source

If you are recording a console or other external HDMI source, rather than the computer’s own desktop, you may need a capture card. OBS’s HDR guidance is specifically for external capture devices on Windows: the device needs a 10-bit format such as P010. OBS’s article, dated 2022-08-02, lists Elgato 4K X and Elgato 4K Pro among devices tested and known to work for that HDR capture workflow. Keep device firmware and drivers current, and check the card’s compatibility with your particular source and setup. This is not a general requirement for recording a computer screen. See OBS’s HDR capture-device guidance.

What do I need to record 4K at 60 fps?

For Camtasia’s documented true 4K/60 capture path, TechSmith’s requirements are specific: its guidance, updated 2024-10-11, covers Camtasia 2024 and later and calls for all of the following conditions.

  1. Set the Camtasia Recorder’s maximum frame rate to 60 fps.
  2. Select H.264 as the encoder.
  3. Make sure the screen content refreshes at 60 fps or higher.
  4. Use a display set to 4K at 60 Hz or higher.
  5. Ensure a discrete GPU is powering the recorded monitor. TechSmith recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or higher, and current graphics drivers.

These are TechSmith’s stated conditions and recommendation for Camtasia, not a universal parts list for every recorder. A computer meeting minimum system requirements is not thereby guaranteed to sustain 4K/60 recording in OBS or another application. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, fps, scene complexity, and system; use the OBS requirements page and its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point.

How to choose

  • Choose OBS Studio for configurable desktop, window, game, or supported capture-device recording, particularly if you also need streaming flexibility.
  • Choose Camtasia when the convenience of recording and editing a tutorial or training video in one product outweighs the need to configure a separate editing workflow. Verify the 4K/60 conditions if that target matters.
  • Choose ShadowPlay when you want gameplay capture or instant replay on a compatible NVIDIA system and its game-focused workflow meets your needs.
  • Choose a capture card only when the source calls for one: it is relevant for an external HDMI source such as a console, not routine capture of the computer’s own desktop.

None of the cited sources supplies a controlled comparison of these products’ CPU load, file size, or image quality. Do not treat NVIDIA’s performance description or a vendor’s system recommendations as a cross-product benchmark.

Common 4K recording problems and fixes

  • Recording is choppy or frames are missed: 4K resolution, higher fps, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect system load. In OBS, begin with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then reduce the target resolution or frame rate if the setup cannot sustain it. Minimum requirements alone are not a performance guarantee.
  • OBS Game Capture does not show the game on a laptop: OBS and the game may be assigned to different GPUs. On supported Windows multi-GPU systems, use the OBS GPU Selection Guide to select the GPU and check that the game and OBS are routed appropriately.
  • The Camtasia recording is not true 4K/60: check each documented condition: 60-fps recorder setting, H.264 encoder, content refreshing at 60 fps or more, a 4K/60 Hz-or-higher display, and a discrete GPU powering that display.
  • External HDR capture does not work: the OBS guidance requires a supported 10-bit capture format such as P010 and applies to external devices on Windows. Check device support, firmware, drivers, and the source signal; compatibility for one card or setup does not establish compatibility for every combination.
  • Editing or playback feels slow: high-resolution media can be demanding. TechSmith recommends local source media and says an SSD can help, while warning that lower-powered systems may have choppy playback and slow editing.

Keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a recorder running

Screen-recording software captures your screen; it is not the same as a service that continuously plays uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream. If your separate goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists—not a screen recorder and not a camera-based live product. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the upload from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.

StreamNeo’s stated features include automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream and one flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Plans are available for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
