If you want to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you need a UHD Blu-ray player; a standard Blu-ray player cannot read them. A UHD player can also play standard Blu-ray discs, but support for DVDs, CDs, SACDs, 3D Blu-ray, and imported discs varies by model. For most buyers who want broad HDR support, the Panasonic DP-UB820 is the strongest all-rounder to consider; the Sony UBP-X700 is a budget-oriented alternative if its HDR trade-offs suit your TV.

Which kind of Blu-ray player do you need for a 4K TV?

Choose a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player if you own UHD discs or expect to buy them. UHD Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray are separate formats: a UHD player can play standard Blu-ray discs, but a regular Blu-ray player cannot play UHD discs, according to TechRadar’s player guide.

If you only have standard Blu-rays or DVDs, a UHD player is not required for those discs. It may still be useful if you plan to add UHD discs later, but check its full supported-disc list rather than relying on the UHD label alone.

Panasonic DP-UB820 Panasonic identifies it as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. TechRadar’s guide, updated August 28, 2026, reports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support and names it a strong all-round option based on its testing. Panasonic specifications; TechRadar guide Confirm regional model, local stock, and price. For 4K/60p, Panasonic specifies a high-speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps. Buyers who want support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
Sony UBP-X700 Sony lists UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, CD, and SACD playback, plus 4K upscaling, HDR10, and Dolby Vision. Sony product page TechRadar reports that it does not support HDR10+ and that its Dolby Vision setting may need toggling. Check the exact model suffix and TV compatibility. A budget-oriented option for mixed disc collections when HDR10+ is not needed.
LG UBK90 (Australian regional example) LG’s May 2018 Australian product sheet lists UHD Blu-ray, older disc formats, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and upscaling. LG product sheet The sheet lists Blu-ray Region B and DVD Region 4. It is not evidence of current availability in Australia or elsewhere. A useful example of why regional disc support matters; verify availability and specifications before considering it.

How to match HDR support to your 4K TV

For HDR playback, the player and television must support a compatible HDR format. A player supporting a format does not add that format to a TV that lacks it. The Sony UBP-X700 supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision according to Sony, while TechRadar reports that it lacks HDR10+. TechRadar reports that the Panasonic DP-UB820 supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Verify the official specifications for the exact regional SKU and your TV before choosing.

Also distinguish native UHD playback from upscaling. A player can upscale lower-resolution material for a 4K display, but the source remains a standard Blu-ray or DVD, not a native 4K disc. Sony says the UBP-X700’s 4K upscaling and output require a compatible 4K display and HDMI cable.

Check your discs and region codes

Make a list of the formats you actually own, then confirm each one in the player manual or official specifications. Sony’s UBP-X700, for example, lists UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, CD, and SACD; that list does not establish support for every player or regional variant.

  • UHD Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray
  • DVD and CD
  • SACD or 3D Blu-ray, if you use either format
  • Imported Blu-rays and DVDs, including their region codes

Do not assume that UHD playback makes a player region-free for older discs. LG’s Australian UBK90 sheet, for example, specifies Blu-ray Region B and DVD Region 4 for that version. Imported-disc compatibility depends on both the disc and the exact player version.

Confirm the HDMI path to your TV

A 4K TV alone does not guarantee that the entire connection will pass the signal you want. If the player connects through an AV receiver or soundbar, check that device’s 4K video pass-through support as well as the TV and player specifications.

  1. Check the player output requirement. Sony says 4K upscaling and output require a compatible 4K display and HDMI cable.
  2. Check the cable rating for the intended signal. Panasonic specifies a high-speed HDMI cable capable of 18 Gbps for 4K/60p on the DP-UB820. Replace a cable only if it is not suitable for the signal path you plan to use.
  3. Check every device between player and TV. Confirm that a receiver or soundbar can pass through the relevant 4K signal and HDR format. Consult the manuals for the exact models.
  4. Consider a separate audio connection only when needed. Some setups may benefit from separate HDMI audio output if an older receiver cannot pass the desired video signal. Verify the available outputs and connection method in both device manuals before wiring the system.
