The best current route to 4K and 60fps for Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is a community native recompilation, not an official commercial remaster. On PS5, use the native build at 4K output with its normal 60-fps option. Release 0.9.0 can also present blended intermediate frames on 90-Hz, 120-Hz, or faster displays, but the game simulation remains a 60-fps process. On Steam Deck, use the Linux x86-64 build, launch it with play.sh, and target a stable 60fps at the handheld’s native resolution.
Both versions require your own legally created European GEDP01 disc image in .iso or .gcm format. The cited build does not support the USA disc. Start with the unmodified game, confirm that it launches and saves, and only then add optional texture replacements.
What the 4K/60 setup actually is
The modern high-resolution version is a community recompilation of the original GameCube game. It rebuilds the game for current platforms rather than emulating the original executable inside a GameCube emulator. That distinction matters: the native PS5 package exposes platform-specific display and frame-rate controls, while the Steam Deck package is a Linux executable intended to run directly on the handheld’s operating system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe PS5 listing describes output up to 4K and up to 120fps. The 0.9.0 release notes qualify the faster modes: the game’s own frames are still produced at a 60-fps cadence, and the higher-refresh options display blended frames between those updates. A 120-Hz television can therefore look smoother during camera movement without turning the original game logic into a 120-updates-per-second simulation.

The Linux release notes describe rendering at the display’s resolution, up to 4K at 60fps, and specifically document a Steam Deck launch workflow. That is a target, not a guarantee that every dock, display, power profile, or external resolution will sustain 4K/60. Handheld play at the Deck’s native screen resolution is the least complicated configuration.
Requirements before you install anything
Use the supported game image
The recompilation does not include the original program, graphics, sound, or music. You must create a disc image from your own legally obtained copy and supply it to the build. The documented requirement is exact: European GEDP01, in either .iso or .gcm format. The USA disc is not supported.
Do not treat downloading the recompilation as buying the game. Keep your original disc or other lawful source, make the image yourself, and use that image only with the native build. If a launch failure occurs, checking the region and identifier is more useful than changing graphics settings.

- For a television or monitor that accepts 4K, select 4K output on PS5 and use 16:9 unless you specifically want the original composition.
- For a 90-Hz or 120-Hz display, enable the console’s 120-Hz output when using the high-refresh presentation in release 0.9.0.
- For handheld Steam Deck play, begin at the Deck’s native screen resolution and cap the game at a steady 60fps.
- For a docked Deck, choose an external mode that the build, dock, cable, and display can sustain. The documented notes do not establish a universal 4K Steam Deck preset.
Keep the first launch simple
Use the base game before installing custom textures. A clean first launch proves that the executable, image, save path, and controller input are working. It also gives you a known-good baseline if a texture pack later causes a missing surface, a long load, or a crash.
Recommended PS5 settings
| Setting | Recommended choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Native PS5 recompilation | Provides the documented current-platform 4K and 60-fps path. |
| Output resolution | 4K when the connected display supports it | Uses the high-resolution render target described by the PS5 listing. |
| Frame-rate mode | 60fps for the normal target | Matches the game’s documented frame cadence. |
| High-refresh presentation | 90-Hz, 120-Hz, or faster display mode in release 0.9.0 | Adds displayed intermediate frames between 60-fps game frames. |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 for a modern widescreen television; 4:3 for original framing | Both native display choices are available. |
| Textures | Original assets for the first launch | Separates installation or save problems from optional replacement assets. |
Set 4K and the normal 60fps mode
- Install the native PS5 recompilation and provide the required European
GEDP01image when prompted by the build. - Set the game’s output or render option to 4K if the television or monitor accepts 4K input.
- Select the standard 60-fps option. This is the clearest reference configuration for judging motion, input response, and stability.
- Choose native 16:9 for a full modern-screen presentation, or switch to 4:3 if preserving the original framing is more important than filling the panel.
- Launch and save once before changing textures or high-refresh options.
The 60-fps choice refers to the game’s frame production, not merely the television’s refresh rate. A 60-Hz display shows those frames one-for-one. A faster display can show additional presented images, but those extra images do not add new game-simulation updates.

Use the 0.9.0 high-refresh mode correctly
Release 0.9.0 can present intermediate frames on displays running at 90Hz, 120Hz, or higher. To use that mode, enable 120-Hz output on the PS5 when the display supports it, then select the corresponding high-refresh option in the recompilation. Expect smoother camera and object motion, not a new 120-fps version of the game. The underlying timing, animation logic, and input sampling remain tied to the original 60-fps cadence.
If motion looks unusual or the display does not remain at its high-refresh mode, return to the standard 60-fps option. That gives you a straightforward baseline and avoids confusing a presentation feature with a performance increase.
Choose 16:9 or 4:3 deliberately
Native 16:9 is the practical choice for a current television: it uses the widescreen panel without relying on external stretching. The 4:3 option preserves the original composition and is useful if you want the framing associated with the GameCube release. Decide based on composition rather than assuming that a wider image is automatically more accurate; both modes are provided by the build.
Steam Deck installation and settings
Launch the Linux build
- Download the Linux x86-64 recompilation build.
- Place your own European
GEDP01.isoor.gcmin the folder expected by the recompilation. - Run
play.sh. The release notes identify this script as the Steam Deck launch sequence. - Confirm that the game reaches gameplay and can create a save before adding replacement textures.
- For Game Mode access, add the working launch entry to Steam as a non-Steam game, then start it from your library.
The executable is not a complete game download: it needs the image you supply. If the script opens but gameplay does not start, verify the image’s region and file format before changing Deck performance settings.
Handheld profile
Use the Deck’s native screen resolution for portable play and set a stable 60-fps cap. This profile avoids asking the handheld to drive an unnecessary 4K render target on a small internal panel. Keep 16:9 for the widescreen presentation, or select 4:3 if you want the original framing.

A stable cap is more valuable than a fluctuating peak. The game’s documented target is 60fps, so judge the profile by consistent frame delivery during exploration, combat, and room transitions rather than by an uncapped counter.

When docked, select the external display mode that your particular dock and display can sustain. The release notes document rendering up to 4K at 60fps, but they do not establish a tested universal 4K preset for every Steam Deck dock. If a 4K mode is unstable, choose a lower external resolution that holds 60fps consistently instead of treating 4K as mandatory.
Use 16:9 on a widescreen television or monitor. If the external display or your preferences favor the original composition, 4:3 remains available. Make one change at a time so that a docked-display issue can be separated from an image or texture issue.
Base graphics, widescreen, and texture replacements
Start with the rebuilt base assets
The native recompilation already improves presentation without replacing every texture. Its release notes describe rebuilt baked room shadows and crisp redrawn text options. Those changes are part of the native build, so you can obtain a cleaner image while retaining the original asset set.
Run this base configuration first. It is the troubleshooting reference: if the game launches, saves, and renders correctly with original assets, later visual changes can be evaluated independently.

Understand what an HD texture pack changes
The project supports Dolphin-format PNG and DDS texture packs. A pack can add surface detail, but it does not change the original geometry or animation. Walls, character models, collision, and movement remain governed by the game; only supported texture surfaces are replaced.
Zombie’s community pack is a 4x DDS upscale. Its documentation lists a 2.66 GB download identified as “Emulation King, 2026.” For Dolphin users, the documented installation location is Load/Textures/GED, with Load Custom Textures enabled. That path and toggle describe Dolphin’s texture workflow; do not assume that copying the folder blindly into the native PS5 or Linux build will produce the same result.
Add textures only after the baseline works
- Play the unmodified build long enough to confirm launch, rendering, controls, and saving.
- Back up the working configuration and save data.
- Install one texture pack in the location and format documented for the runtime you are using.
- Enable custom-texture loading only after the files are in place.
- Test several rooms and a save/load cycle.
- If a surface is missing or the game becomes unstable, disable the pack and return to the base profile before testing another change.
The extra storage requirement is substantial: the cited pack alone is 2.66 GB. Texture replacements also add file-management and loading complexity, so they are an image-quality option, not a prerequisite for 4K output or 60-fps performance.
Native recompilation versus Dolphin
| Choice | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Native PS5 recompilation | Documented 4K output, 60-fps mode, native 16:9/4:3 controls, and optional high-refresh presentation. | Requires the supported European GEDP01 image and depends on the project’s current homebrew availability. |
| Native Linux build on Steam Deck | Uses play.sh, is tested on Steam Deck, and targets 60fps at the display’s resolution. |
A universal docked 4K/60 preset is not documented. |
| Dolphin emulation | Separate configurable emulator workflow with documented custom-texture loading and PNG/DDS support. | It is not the native recompilation path and requires its own emulator configuration. |
Choose the native build when your priority is the documented PS5 or Linux workflow and its platform-specific controls. Choose Dolphin when you specifically want an emulator-centered configuration or its established texture-management workflow. The two approaches should not be treated as interchangeable settings menus.

How to troubleshoot the common failure points
The game does not boot
- Confirm that the image is your own European
GEDP01dump. - Check that the file ends in
.isoor.gcm. - Make sure the image is in the recompilation folder expected by the build and that
play.shis being run for the Linux version. - Remove optional texture files and retry with the base assets.
A USA image will not become compatible through a filename change; the cited build explicitly does not support that region.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The image looks stretched or incorrectly framed
Switch between the build’s native 16:9 and 4:3 modes. Use 16:9 for a modern widescreen panel when filling the display is the goal. Use 4:3 when the original composition matters more. Avoid adding a second layer of television-side stretching while diagnosing the problem.
Textures cause a problem
Disable custom-texture loading and return to the verified base build. If the game then works, reinstall the pack using the runtime-specific instructions. Dolphin’s Load/Textures/GED location and Load Custom Textures switch are not evidence that the same path is valid for the native PS5 or Linux package.
High-refresh output is confusing
Return to the standard 60-fps mode and test on a 60-Hz output first. Once that is stable, enable 120-Hz output and the release 0.9.0 high-refresh presentation. Remember that blended intermediate frames improve displayed smoothness but do not change the game’s 60-fps simulation cadence.
Docked Steam Deck play is unstable at 4K
Lower the external output mode until the build holds a consistent 60fps. The available notes document rendering up to 4K at 60fps, but not a guaranteed result for every dock, cable, display, or power profile. A stable lower-resolution signal is the practical fallback.
Quick Recap
Recommended profiles at a glance
| Use case | Resolution choice | Frame option | Aspect ratio | Textures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 on a 4K television | 4K output | Standard 60fps | 16:9 | Base assets first |
| PS5 on a 120-Hz television | 4K if supported | 60fps game cadence with release 0.9.0 high-refresh presentation | 16:9 | Base assets first |
| PS5 preserving original framing | Display mode supported by the screen | Standard 60fps | 4:3 | Base assets first |
| Steam Deck handheld | Deck’s native screen resolution | Stable 60fps cap | 16:9 or 4:3 | Base assets first |
| Steam Deck docked | External mode the dock and display sustain | Stable 60fps target | 16:9 or 4:3 | Add only after baseline testing |
Final setup checklist
- Use the native recompilation rather than expecting an official remaster.
- Supply a legally created European
GEDP01.isoor.gcm; the USA disc is unsupported. - On PS5, begin with 4K output, standard 60fps, and native 16:9.
- Enable PS5 120-Hz output only when using the release 0.9.0 high-refresh presentation, and understand that its intermediate frames do not create 120-fps simulation.
- On Steam Deck, use the Linux x86-64 build, launch with
play.sh, and add it to Steam as a non-Steam game for Game Mode. - Use the Deck’s native resolution handheld; choose a docked resolution based on what your hardware sustains, not on a universal 4K promise.
- Test the unmodified game before installing PNG or DDS replacements.
- For Dolphin texture loading, use the documented
Load/Textures/GEDfolder and enable Load Custom Textures.
