For most investors seeking a low-maintenance core holding, an S&P 500 index fund is the stronger default: it spreads ownership across hundreds of large U.S. companies and is designed to track a transparent benchmark. Berkshire Hathaway can be the better fit when you deliberately want one company’s insurance operations, operating businesses, investment portfolio, cash reserves and capital-allocation decisions—and accept concentration, succession and company-specific risks. A blended allocation can combine those characteristics, but it does not remove equity-market risk.

The decision in plain English

These are not interchangeable versions of the same investment. Buying Berkshire Hathaway stock gives you an ownership claim on one conglomerate, traded through two common-stock classes: BRK.A and BRK.B. Buying an S&P 500 index fund gives you a fund interest in a portfolio that seeks to replicate the performance of the S&P 500, a large-cap U.S. equity benchmark.

Choose the index fund first if your priorities are broad diversification, a rules-based approach, easy portfolio maintenance and results that should stay close to the U.S. large-cap market. Consider Berkshire when you understand and accept single-company exposure and specifically want exposure to its insurance franchise, railroads, utilities and energy, manufacturing, service and retail companies, equity holdings, liquidity reserve and management’s capital-allocation choices. Your tax situation, need for cash income, investing horizon and ability to tolerate a large drawdown should decide the final allocation.

What you actually own

Berkshire Hathaway: one conglomerate with several economic engines

Berkshire’s 2025 annual report describes the company as a “unique conglomerate” whose insurance operations are its core. It also owns operating businesses across multiple sectors and holds a substantial equity portfolio. The result is a collection of businesses under one parent company, not a fund that continuously rebalances to a market index.

Shareholders own either BRK.A or BRK.B common stock. The two classes represent the same underlying company but have different share economics and trading prices. Berkshire’s stated policy is generally to retain earnings rather than pay a regular cash dividend. Investors therefore rely primarily on changes in the share price and the company’s long-term growth in intrinsic value for their return.

Berkshire’s internal diversification can reduce dependence on any one operating subsidiary, but it does not eliminate company risk. A decision by Berkshire’s board or future management can affect every shareholder at once. Insurance underwriting results, catastrophe losses, interest rates, the performance of its public-stock portfolio, regulation and the prices paid for acquisitions can all influence the outcome.

An S&P 500 index fund: a portfolio in a single security

An index fund pools investors’ money and owns the securities in—or a representative sample of—the S&P 500. The fund structure lets you buy hundreds of companies through one trade and receive the market’s dividends and capital gains distributions according to the fund’s rules. The S&P 500 is still an all-equity investment: it has no built-in allocation to bonds or cash that protects you from a broad stock-market decline.

The 2025 report for the Vanguard 500 Index Fund listed 517 holdings. Its largest sector exposures included information technology at 34.4% of assets, financials at 13.2%, communication services at 10.6% and health care at 9.6%. Because the index is weighted by company size, the largest constituents and sectors can account for a large share of the portfolio. You get diversification across companies, but not an equal slice of every industry or a guarantee that the portfolio will be balanced in every market.

Performance: what the published numbers do—and do not—show

The long record favors Berkshire, while the most recent calendar year favored the S&P 500. The periods and definitions matter, so do not treat the figures as a forecast.

The Vanguard shareholder report also states that a hypothetical $10,000 investment incurred $15 in costs during 2025, equivalent to a 0.14% expense ratio for those Investor Shares. That figure belongs to that share class and reporting year; an ETF, another mutual-fund share class or another provider can have a different expense ratio, spread and tax profile.

Berkshire’s annual report itself warns that investment gains and losses can make annual GAAP earnings swing sharply. For judging the underlying businesses in a particular year, it identifies operating earnings as the more useful measure. In 2025, Berkshire reported $44.5 billion of operating earnings and $46 billion of net cash flow from operating activities. Cash and U.S. Treasury holdings exceeded $370 billion. Those figures describe financial capacity at that date, not a promise that the share price will rise or that future operating results will match them.

Diversification versus concentration

What the index fund diversifies

  • Company risk: A problem at one constituent usually has a limited effect on the whole fund compared with owning that company directly.
  • Business models: The portfolio includes technology, financial, health-care, industrial, consumer, communication and other large-cap businesses.
  • Management teams: You are not dependent on one chief executive or board to allocate all of your capital successfully.
  • Rebalancing rules: Index committees and fund processes add and remove companies as the benchmark changes, without requiring you to research every decision.

Diversification does not mean low volatility. A 34.4% information-technology weight, for example, can make the fund sensitive to technology valuations, regulation and economic cycles. All holdings are equities, so a recession, valuation contraction or broad risk-off event can reduce the entire fund.

What Berkshire concentrates

Berkshire combines many businesses, but the shareholder still owns one legal entity whose results depend on one balance sheet, one board and one capital-allocation system. Insurance losses, a poorly timed acquisition, a change in regulation or a succession decision can affect the whole holding. Berkshire’s large cash and Treasury position can provide resilience and acquisition capacity, yet holding cash also means part of the company may earn less than stocks during a strong equity rally.

Concentration can be intentional. If you have studied Berkshire’s insurance economics, operating subsidiaries, valuation and succession plan, the stock can provide a differentiated source of returns that an index fund will not replicate. If you have not made that analysis, the same concentration can become an uncompensated risk.

Management, succession and capital allocation

Berkshire’s stated objective is to be an exceptional steward of shareholders’ capital and maximize long-term growth in intrinsic value per share. Management decides how much cash to retain, when to repurchase shares, whether to buy entire companies, how to invest the equity portfolio and how much liquidity to hold. Those decisions are a central part of the investment thesis.

The trade-off is dependence on people and governance. A successor may have a different appetite for acquisitions, share repurchases, cash reserves or public-stock investments. The board’s oversight, insurance discipline and ability to preserve Berkshire’s culture matter as much as any individual executive. Investors should read the succession disclosures and future annual reports rather than assume the historical capital-allocation record will continue automatically.

An S&P 500 fund removes that single-manager dependency but accepts the benchmark’s collective decisions. Index methodology determines which companies qualify, how they are weighted and when changes occur. You are not asking one management team to outperform; you are accepting market exposure minus the fund’s expenses and tracking difference.

Fees, tracking difference and taxes

Fund costs

A fund’s expense ratio is deducted from assets, and trading costs, portfolio turnover, securities lending, cash management and sampling can create a small gap between the fund and its benchmark. The documented Vanguard Investor Shares example cost 0.14% in 2025 and lagged its benchmark by 0.17 percentage point for the year. Do not apply that number to every S&P 500 vehicle. Compare the current expense ratio, share class, bid-ask spread, trading commission and any account fee before investing.

Berkshire’s embedded costs

Berkshire does not publish an index-fund-style expense ratio for shareholders. Costs are embedded in the operations of its insurance companies and other businesses, while the public-stock portfolio and cash are managed inside the company. You avoid a separate fund expense ratio, but you still bear the economic cost of underwriting operations, taxes paid by subsidiaries, acquisition prices and management decisions through the company’s results and valuation.

Tax differences

Berkshire generally retains earnings and does not pay a regular cash dividend, so a shareholder typically does not receive an annual dividend distribution simply because Berkshire’s subsidiaries earned profits. Tax is usually triggered when you sell, subject to your jurisdiction, account type and basis rules.

An index fund can distribute dividends received from its holdings and realized capital gains, depending on the fund’s structure and turnover. In a taxable account, those distributions can create tax due even when you did not sell fund shares. In a retirement or other tax-advantaged account, the timing and treatment may differ. Current rules vary by country, state or province and account type; confirm them with up-to-date local guidance before choosing between the two.

Income, liquidity and trading mechanics

If you need regular portfolio income, neither choice should be assumed to behave like a bond or a guaranteed-income product. Berkshire’s no-regular-dividend policy means you must sell shares to create cash, while an index fund generally passes through dividends on its distribution schedule. Dividend amounts and dates can change, and selling shares can create taxable gains.

Both BRK.A/BRK.B and exchange-traded index funds trade during market hours, but their practical liquidity differs. BRK.B is the more accessible Berkshire class for many investors because its per-share price is lower than BRK.A; check the current quote and your broker’s fractional-share rules. An ETF has an intraday market price, bid-ask spread and possible premium or discount to net asset value. A mutual fund share class is normally bought or sold at the next calculated net asset value rather than an intraday price.

Which choice fits common investor situations?

Building a first long-term core portfolio

An S&P 500 fund is usually the simpler starting point when you need one transparent U.S. equity holding. It offers immediate diversification and a process you can automate. You may still need international stocks, bonds or cash because the fund covers only large-cap U.S. equities.

Seeking a deliberate, concentrated holding

Berkshire can fit an investor who has a high tolerance for company-specific risk, a long horizon and the willingness to follow annual reports, operating results, insurance trends and succession developments. Keep the position sized so a disappointing Berkshire-specific outcome would not derail essential goals.

Needing cash distributions

An index fund’s distributions may be more convenient than selling Berkshire shares, but neither product guarantees a stable income stream. Match the investment to your spending plan and consider a separate cash or fixed-income reserve for near-term expenses.

Holding in a taxable account

Berkshire’s retention of earnings can defer taxable distributions, while an index fund may distribute dividends and gains. That difference can matter, but it should not override diversification and risk considerations. Compare after-tax outcomes using your local rules and expected holding period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the job of the holding. Decide whether it is your entire U.S. stock allocation, a core position alongside other assets or a small satellite position.
  2. Set your time horizon. Money needed in the next few years generally should not depend entirely on either all-equity choice.
  3. Measure concentration tolerance. Estimate the portfolio loss you could withstand if Berkshire underperformed for years or if the broad stock market fell sharply.
  4. Check existing exposure. Employer stock, other large-cap funds and sector funds can make your actual concentration very different from the single holding you are considering.
  5. Compare the exact vehicle. For an index fund, review the current expense ratio, tracking record, spread, tax-distribution history and share class. For Berkshire, review BRK.A versus BRK.B pricing, liquidity and your broker’s trading rules.
  6. Model taxes and cash needs. Account for dividend distributions, capital-gains rates, withholding and whether you will need to sell shares for spending.
  7. Write an allocation rule. State the target percentage, when you will rebalance and what evidence would justify changing it. Do not make a change solely because one option led in the previous year.

How to implement an S&P 500 index-fund position

  1. Open or use a brokerage, retirement or other account appropriate to your jurisdiction and objective.
  2. Compare the available S&P 500 mutual funds and ETFs by current expense ratio, benchmark-tracking record, bid-ask spread, minimum investment, distribution policy and tax documents.
  3. Choose a contribution schedule. Automatic periodic purchases can reduce the temptation to time the market, but they do not remove the risk of a declining market.
  4. Place the order using the vehicle’s normal process: an ETF trades intraday, while a mutual fund generally executes at the next calculated net asset value.
  5. Record the fund, share class, cost basis and target allocation. Review the fund’s annual and semiannual reports for changes in fees, holdings and tracking results.

How to implement a Berkshire position

  1. Choose between BRK.A and BRK.B after checking the current price, liquidity, voting rights and your broker’s ability to handle whole or fractional shares.
  2. Read Berkshire’s latest annual report, including insurance underwriting, operating businesses, cash and Treasury holdings, investment results, share repurchases and succession disclosures.
  3. Decide what percentage of the total portfolio you can keep through a prolonged period of underperformance without selling out of fear.
  4. Buy in a way that fits your risk plan rather than chasing a recent return. A limit order may help control execution price in a thinly traded situation; understand that an order may not fill.
  5. Monitor operating earnings, cash generation, capital allocation and the relationship between price and your estimate of intrinsic value. Do not judge one year solely by GAAP net income because investment gains and losses can cause large swings.

When a blend makes sense

A blended position can give you the index fund’s broad company diversification and Berkshire’s distinct mix of insurance, operating businesses, retained earnings and cash. The blend is not automatically safer: both holdings are equities, and Berkshire may overlap with financial, industrial and other companies already represented in the index. Set a maximum Berkshire weight, review overlap and rebalance according to a written rule.

For example, an investor might use the index fund as the core U.S. allocation and keep Berkshire as a smaller satellite position. The appropriate percentages depend on the rest of the portfolio, not on a universal formula. A person whose job, pension or existing investments already depend on U.S. corporate profits may need less additional concentration than someone with a diversified global allocation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing mismatched return figures: Berkshire’s 2025 number is per-share market value, while the S&P 500 figure includes dividends.
  • Projecting the historical Berkshire advantage: The 19.7% versus 10.5% compounded results from 1965–2025 are backward-looking.
  • Assuming an index fund is perfectly diversified: It remains concentrated in large U.S. companies and, in 2025, had a 34.4% information-technology weight.
  • Treating cash as a guaranteed advantage: Berkshire’s more than $370 billion in cash and U.S. Treasuries can support resilience and acquisitions, but cash may lag stocks during a strong rally.
  • Ignoring distributions: Fund dividends and capital-gains distributions can create taxable income in a taxable account; Berkshire’s retained earnings do not make all taxes disappear.
  • Using a share-class cost universally: The 0.14% Vanguard Investor Shares cost applies to that documented 2025 example, not every S&P 500 fund or ETF.
  • Making a decision from one calendar year: Berkshire lagged the S&P 500 in 2025, but one year cannot determine a suitable long-term allocation.

Bottom line

An S&P 500 index fund is the better default for broad U.S. large-cap exposure, low maintenance and a benchmark-oriented result. Berkshire Hathaway is a specialized choice for investors who intentionally want a concentrated claim on one conglomerate’s businesses, capital allocation, liquidity and retained earnings. Decide only after weighing diversification, succession risk, sector exposure, costs, taxes, income needs, liquidity and time horizon. Past performance—including Berkshire’s exceptional 1965–2025 record—cannot identify the next decade’s winner.
