The film behind the “Inception replacement” comparison is Hypnotic (2023), a reality-bending science-fiction thriller starring Ben Affleck. It has appeared on streaming services in Germany and was described as Prime Video’s No. 1 movie in the UK in July 2025, but those dated reports do not confirm where it streams today.
What is Hypnotic about?
Affleck plays detective Danny Rourke, whose investigation into a series of bank robberies becomes connected to his missing daughter. Along the way, he encounters people capable of manipulating perception and reality. Alice Braga plays Diana Cruz, and William Fichtner plays Dellrayne. The premise is best approached without seeking out plot details: its shifting sense of what is real is part of the film’s central hook.

Robert Rodriguez wrote and directed the 2023 film. Coverage has compared its reality-bending setup to Inception, but “replacement” is a headline-style comparison, not an official connection or an established judgment that it can take the earlier film’s place. The available reporting supports a broad premise-and-tone comparison, not a scene-by-scene or quality assessment.
Where has Hypnotic streamed?
Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time. The documented availability reports are historical and specific to Germany:

What does the Prime Video No. 1 claim mean?
T3 described Hypnotic as Prime Video’s number-one movie in the UK in an article published July 2, 2025. That is a dated chart claim, not a current ranking, a measure of total viewers, or evidence that it is now available on Prime Video in the UK.

Is it a good substitute for Inception?
If you want another thriller built around unstable perception and reality, Hypnotic shares a broad premise-level appeal with Inception. The comparison should stop there: the reporting cited here does not establish that the films are equivalent in execution or quality. Consider it a related premise rather than a confirmed replacement, and go in knowing that the story centers on a detective, a missing daughter, and reality manipulation.
