Marvel Rivals characters are built by connecting recognizable Marvel traits to a stylized design that still reads in motion and during a crowded fight. The art team describes a process that starts with research into a hero’s history and appearances, then moves through concept decisions, 3D production, animation and visual effects. Cyclops offers a concrete example: his classic identity remains visible in a futuristic costume and visor, while careful rigging lets him emote and supports alternate looks.

Where character design begins: research and recognition

The team says it starts by examining Marvel Comics storylines and specific depictions of the character, then broadens its references to movies, games, animation and toys. The purpose is to form a fuller picture of the character’s identity—not to copy one version in isolation.

From that research, artists identify the traits that need to survive a redesign. The team names costumes, powers, logos and weapons, as well as the immediate impression a hero makes. Its examples are Hulk’s size and Spider-Man’s agility. Those anchors help a character register at a glance even when the design is new or the action is fast. The art team puts the goal this way: “Strengthening and maintaining these elements is essential to ensuring that players can instantly recognize and call out the character’s name at first glance.”

How the team reinterprets a hero without losing the source

Marvel Rivals aims for a distinct visual identity rather than a literal transfer of comic art into a game model. The design challenge is to retain the recognizable anchors while making choices that fit the game’s own style, the character’s story and the demands of play.

Cyclops: classic cues in a futuristic design

For Cyclops, the art team says it drew on classic comic designs while seeking a futuristic, fashionable and streamlined result. It cites the costume cut, gold tactical straps and iconic energy-suppressing visor as parts of that reinterpretation. The visor is not just a recognizable object: it carries the character’s power and visual identity into the new design.

Costumes: references, themes and Marvel collaboration

Art director Dino Ma describes costume development as a search for distinctive ideas, using mood boards of keywords and reference images. He says the team collaborates with Marvel Games to settle key iconic imagery, drawing on both original designs and Marvel’s broader history. Some costumes also respond to seasonal themes; the first season’s Eternal Night Falls vampire theme is one example.

Ma describes the broader design approach as preserving a 2D sensibility while building in 3D: “The real key to our success was keeping a 2D mindset throughout the development process, adhering to the stylistic characteristics and aesthetics of 2D art.” In his account, expressive, exaggerated forms and bold color draw on anime, animated films, graphic packaging and Marvel’s history. He says the rendering approach combines stylized textures with physically based rendering (PBR) and non-photorealistic rendering (NPR), balancing detail with a stylized appearance. That is an explanation of the visual approach, not a claim that every asset uses identical settings.

How a concept moves into a 3D character

The interview frames modeling and texturing as part of the production pipeline, but gives more detail about Cyclops’s design, rigging and animation than about specific modeling software, texture maps or technical settings. It does not describe a complete studio production manual. What it does show is how a design decision can carry forward: the visor, for example, affects both the model’s identity and the way its face must be rigged.

Rigging for expression and alternate looks

The team says Cyclops’s rig was relatively standard, but his default visor made the eye area a special consideration. Artists needed to preserve expressive animation with the visor on while also supporting alternate costumes that do not include it. This is a practical example of concept art meeting implementation: a strong silhouette or signature accessory has to work with the character’s face and animation, not just look convincing in a still image.

How movement and abilities are developed

For Cyclops, the team says it establishes basic actions—idle, running and jumping—before developing skill animations. Those foundational movements set the character’s movement style, giving later abilities a consistent base. The team says it prioritizes function while drawing on signature comic moves, so an animation can feel true to the hero and communicate what is happening in play.

Why visual effects are part of a character’s identity

In Marvel Rivals, effects are not merely decoration around an ability. The art team says they are central to representing each character’s identity: “In Marvel Rivals, visual effects are central to representing each character’s identity.” Its description combines a shared comic-inspired rendering framework with character-specific materials, intellectual-property elements and dynamic rhythm.

Marvel Legends Series Marvel Rivals Spider-Man & Luna Snow, Video Game-Inspired Collectible 6-Inch Action Figures
  • TEAM-UP WITH A MARVEL RIVALS 2-PACK: Spider-Man and Luna Snow figures are inspired by their appearance in the Marvel Rivals video game where Super Heroes and Super Villains from across the Marvel Multiverse use their incredible abilities to battle
  • GAMING-INSPIRED ACCESSORIES: Hasbro Marvel Legends action figures come with 6 accessories. Spider-Man figure includes 2 alternate hands. Luna Snow figure includes alternate head, 2 alt hands and snowflake power effect which snaps to her wrist

  • THWIP AND FLIP: Swinging around the arena on his signature weblines, Spider-Man catches his rivals by surprise with sneaky, sticky bursts of webbing and unexpected attacks from above

That balance lets effects belong to the game as a whole while still expressing an individual hero. The team also describes hero entrances and MVP highlights as opportunities to create a small narrative connecting costume, animation and environment. In those moments, the character’s appearance and movement can work together with the setting to suggest more than the mechanics of a single attack.

How designs stay readable in costumes and combat

Alternate costumes can change a hero’s look, but the team says it preserves recognition through body silhouette, logos, signature weapons and color schemes. Those elements matter both for identifying a character across variants and for keeping the cast visually distinct during multiplayer combat.

Recognition and combat clarity are related but not identical. A costume can be faithful to a character’s history yet still need to work amid effects, movement and other players. The sources identify visual clarity as a design concern, but do not report a numerical readability benchmark or formal scoring system. They also do not disclose character-team sizes, production time or per-character budgets.

What the interviews reveal—and what they do not

The official Marvel Rivals Art Vision Vol. 03 diary introduces character concepts and visual effects, while the more detailed workflow described here comes from the 80 Level art-team interview and Creative Bloq’s interview with Dino Ma. Together, these accounts explain the design logic and selected production decisions; they do not establish a current 2026 roster of staff, a fixed schedule, a software list or a complete internal workflow.

The useful takeaway is the connected nature of the work: research identifies what makes a hero recognizable; concept design adapts those traits to the game’s visual identity; 3D production and rigging make the concept workable; animation and effects give it movement and presence; and costume decisions have to preserve recognition in combat. Cyclops demonstrates how one signature element—the visor—can shape both the look and the technical demands of a character.
