“Beginning J2ME: Building MIDlets” refers to two separate 2005-era resources: a chapter in Beginning J2ME: From Novice to Professional, Third Edition, and a standalone InfoWorld how-to article. Both explain Java ME development for MIDP devices; the InfoWorld article describes the historical build sequence, including preverifying and packaging a MIDlet.

Which “Beginning J2ME: Building MIDlets” resource are you looking for?

The phrase has two close matches, and they are not the same publication:

  • Beginning J2ME: From Novice to Professional, Third Edition, by Sing Li and Jonathan Knudsen, contains “Building MIDlets” as Chapter 2. The publisher lists the book as 480 pages with 18 numbered chapters. Apress/Springer’s book listing identifies the edition and its contents.
  • InfoWorld published a separate article titled “Beginning J2ME: Building MIDlets” on May 2, 2005. Its subject is how MIDlet development worked, rather than the complete contents of the book. Read the InfoWorld article.

J2ME was Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition, the historical Java platform for resource-constrained mobile devices. MIDP means Mobile Information Device Profile. InfoWorld describes MIDlets as MIDP applications: Java programs that use the javax.microedition APIs for device-specific functions.

How did the historical MIDlet build process work?

InfoWorld’s 2005 article gives this sequence: “edit, source code, compile, preverify, package, test or deploy.” This is a description of the article’s period and toolchain, not a claim about what a developer should use for a current mobile app.

  1. Edit and write source code: create the Java source for the application.
  2. Compile: turn the source into Java bytecode.
  3. Preverify: perform the additional verification step used in the MIDlet build process described by InfoWorld.
  4. Package: assemble the application for its target environment.
  5. Test or deploy: try the packaged MIDlet in an appropriate environment or deliver it to a device.

The extra preverification and packaging steps are why this workflow is more involved than a basic edit-compile-run cycle. The cited article documents the historical sequence; it does not establish compatibility with current development tools, operating systems, or devices.

What does the third edition of the book cover?

Chapter 2, “Building MIDlets,” sits within a broader survey of Java ME development. The book’s contents move from MIDlet fundamentals and user interfaces through the capabilities developers could use in compatible devices:

  • Persistence, including the MIDP Record Store, File Connection, and PIM API
  • Network connections, Wireless Messaging API, Bluetooth, and OBEX
  • Custom user interfaces and the Game API
  • 3D graphics, sound, music, and video through MMAPI
  • Performance tuning and protecting network data

That range makes the book a historical overview of mobile Java development, not evidence that the same APIs or workflow are a current platform recommendation.
