The current Beats Pill wireless Bluetooth speaker carries an IP67 rating. The “6” means it is dust-tight under the IEC 60529 test, while the “7” covers temporary immersion under specified conditions, commonly summarized as up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.
That does not make the speaker waterproof. Beats and Apple describe it as water- and dust-resistant, not waterproof or dustproof. Light rain and incidental splashes are reasonable uses, but avoid showers, pressurized spray, pools, the ocean, soap, steam rooms, intentional submersion and charging while the speaker is wet.
What IP67 means on the Beats Pill
IP is short for Ingress Protection, the classification system defined by IEC 60529. The two digits describe protection against different kinds of intrusion; they are not a single score for every type of water exposure.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The first digit: 6 for dust
The first digit, 6, is the highest dust-protection level in the IP code. It indicates that the enclosure is dust-tight under the specified test conditions. For everyday use, that means ordinary airborne dust and many dry particles should not enter the enclosure in the way they could with an unrated product.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dust-tight does not mean the speaker is immune to damage from sand, grit or impacts. Particles can collect around openings, and forcing a gritty connector or button can cause mechanical damage. A dusty speaker should be cleaned gently rather than shaken, scraped or blasted with air.
The second digit: 7 for temporary immersion
The second digit, 7, indicates protection against temporary immersion under defined laboratory conditions. A technical summary of the EN/IEC 60529 test commonly describes this level as immersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes. That figure describes the test condition, not a recommended activity for the owner.
The test does not turn every body of water into a safe operating environment. It does not promise protection from a shower jet, moving water, salt, chlorine, soap, heat, steam, repeated dunking or a speaker that has been dropped and damaged. Seals can also lose effectiveness as the product ages.
What the manufacturer’s wording means in practice
Apple’s current support guidance says, “Your Beats Pill is water- and dust-resistant*, but not waterproof or dustproof.” The asterisk matters: resistance is measured under controlled conditions and can decrease with normal wear. The enclosure may be less protective after drops, cracks, deformation, repeated exposure or damage around a port or grille.

Beats also warns against charging the speaker when it is wet and directs owners to Apple Support for cleaning and drying instructions. Treat IP67 as a boundary for accidental exposure, not as permission to use the Pill underwater.
Exposure guide for the Beats Pill
| Exposure | Recommended approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light rain | Generally acceptable for short, ordinary use; keep water away from openings and dry the speaker afterward. | This is the kind of incidental moisture a water-resistant enclosure is intended to tolerate, but prolonged wetness still increases risk. |
| Incidental splashes | Usually acceptable when they are brief and not pressurized. | IP67 does not authorize high-velocity or forceful water. |
| Shower | Avoid. | Apple specifically excludes pressurized or high-velocity water, and a shower combines spray, heat, steam and often soap. |
| Garden hose or pressure washer | Avoid. | Jet pressure can drive water past seals that withstand a controlled immersion test. |
| Swimming pool | Avoid. | Apple lists pool water among liquids to avoid; chlorine and other treatment chemicals can attack materials and seals. |
| Ocean or salt water | Avoid. | Salt water is specifically excluded and can leave conductive, corrosive residue. |
| Soapy water, sunscreen or lotion | Avoid contact. | Soap, detergent, oils, lotions and sunscreen can affect enclosure materials and seals. |
| Sauna, steam room or extreme humidity | Avoid. | Heat and vapor create conditions outside the ordinary water-resistance use case. |
| Accidental drop into water | Retrieve it, disconnect cables, wipe it and leave it uncharged until completely dry. | The rating does not guarantee that an impact followed by immersion caused no damage. |
| Dust or sand | Keep exposure brief, avoid impacts and clean gently with a dry, soft cloth. | The enclosure is dust-tight in the IP test, but grit can still damage ports, buttons or surfaces. |
Can you use a Beats Pill in the shower?
No. The shower is a poor match for the Pill even though its IP67 label includes an immersion test. Shower water is delivered at speed and can strike the grille and seams repeatedly. The room may also contain steam, high humidity and soap residue. Apple’s guidance explicitly says to avoid pressurized or high-velocity water, so placing the speaker on a shower shelf or carrying it under the spray is outside the recommended use.
If you want music in a bathroom, keep the speaker outside the wet area, away from the spray and from surfaces where condensation can collect. A brief splash from a sink is a different exposure from a continuous shower jet, but it should still be wiped off rather than allowed to remain on the enclosure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan the Beats Pill go in a pool or the ocean?
It should not be taken into a pool or the ocean. The manufacturer specifically lists pool water and salt water among liquids to avoid. Chlorinated and salt water contain dissolved chemicals that can remain on the speaker after evaporation. Those residues may affect materials, contacts and seals even when the initial immersion appears brief.

Do not use the IP67 number as permission to float the Pill, attach it to pool equipment or toss it into shallow water for a photograph. Intentional submersion is expressly discouraged. If the speaker falls in accidentally, treat the incident as a recovery and drying procedure, not as a successful waterproofing test.
What to do if the Beats Pill gets wet
Act promptly, but do not try to force water out with heat or pressure. Follow this sequence after rain, a spill or an accidental dunk:
- Move it away from the liquid. Pick up the speaker and place it on a stable, dry surface. Disconnect any charging or audio cable.
- Wipe the outside. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Blot moisture rather than pushing the cloth into a grille, port or seam.
- Leave it uncharged. Do not connect a charger until the speaker and its charging port are completely dry. Moisture at the port can create a risk of damage, electric shock, fire, injury or property damage.
- Let it dry naturally. Keep it in a dry, well-ventilated place and allow adequate time for moisture to evaporate from openings. A dry exterior is not proof that the inside or port is dry.
- Avoid improvised drying tools. Do not use a hair dryer, compressed air or chemical cleaner unless Beats or Apple specifically instructs you to do so. Heat and high-pressure air can drive moisture deeper or damage seals.
- Inspect before reuse. Look for a cracked enclosure, a loose grille, swelling, unusual heat, distorted controls, charging problems or audio that behaves abnormally. Any of these signs is a reason to stop using the speaker and contact Beats support.
Why charging while wet is especially risky
The charging connection brings electrical contacts close to any moisture trapped in the port. Liquid can create an unintended conductive path, corrode contacts or cause a short circuit. Apple therefore says not to charge the Beats Pill until it is completely dry. The warning applies even if the speaker still turns on and appears to play normally.

How drops, cracks and normal wear change the risk
IP testing assumes an intact product. Beats warns that drops and other impacts can damage the enclosure. A crack, dent or shifted seam can create a path for water or dust that did not exist when the speaker was new. A damaged grille or port cover can have the same effect.
Normal wear is another reason not to interpret IP67 as a permanent promise. Apple says water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and may decrease through ordinary use. Frequent handling, abrasion, exposure to chemicals and repeated wetting can all reduce the margin that the original test represented.
If the Pill has been dropped hard, inspect it before taking it outdoors. A protective carry case or pouch can reduce scratches and impact damage, but an accessory does not make the speaker safe for underwater use or replace the manufacturer’s exclusions.

Using the Pill safely around dust and sand
The dust-tight first digit is useful at a beach, campsite or workshop, but sand deserves extra care. Sand grains are larger and more abrasive than household dust. They can lodge around a button, grille or charging port and then scratch surfaces or interfere with a connector.

- Keep the speaker off loose sand when possible; use a clean, stable surface.
- Do not tap or shake it aggressively after exposure, because grit can move into seams.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- Keep cables and the charging connector covered or away from the gritty area.
- Never charge until you are confident the port is both dry and free of debris.
Dust protection also does not cover liquids mixed with particles, such as muddy water or wet sand. Those combinations can be harder to remove and more likely to leave residue.
What IP67 does not tell you
An IP code does not specify sound quality, battery life, buoyancy, resistance to chemicals or repair coverage. The Beats Pill’s published battery figure is up to 24 hours, but that is a separate product specification and says nothing about how long the speaker may remain wet.
The code also does not provide a consumer guarantee after every accident. Test equipment uses defined water conditions and a product in test condition. Real use adds variables such as spray direction, water temperature, dissolved chemicals, pressure, duration, impacts and product age.
How to compare another speaker with the Beats Pill
If you are choosing between portable speakers, compare the entire protection policy rather than selecting the largest-looking IP number. Check these points in the manufacturer’s current documentation:
- Ingress rating and exclusions: Identify both digits and read whether showers, jets, pools, salt water or intentional submersion are excluded.
- Condition and age: Determine whether the maker warns that resistance declines after wear, drops or repairs.
- Wet-charging guidance: Look for explicit instructions about moisture in the charging port and the consequences of connecting power too soon.
- Chemical exposure: Check treatment of chlorine, salt, soap, sunscreen, oils, solvents and other substances you expect to encounter.
- Damage and service terms: Confirm how liquid damage, cracked enclosures and impact damage are handled by support or warranty policies.
A higher-looking number does not automatically make a product suitable for a shower, pool or ocean. The exclusions and care instructions are part of the rating’s practical meaning.
Everyday decision rule
Use the Beats Pill as a water-resistant portable speaker, not as waterproof equipment. Short exposure to ordinary rain or an accidental splash is the reasonable side of the boundary. Pressurized spray, chemically treated water, steam, extreme humidity and deliberate immersion are on the avoid side. After any wet incident, disconnect the speaker, wipe it with a dry lint-free cloth and wait for complete drying before charging.
