Check whether your computer meets the official minimums
Steam lists separate minimum specifications for Windows and macOS. These are floors, not performance guarantees. The Windows listing targets 30 frames per second at 1,920 × 1,080, and the macOS listing gives the same target. A system at or below the floor can fail to launch, according to Steam’s support guidance.

How to check Windows specifications
- Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and confirm that the edition and build are Windows 11 64-bit. - Open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag, and inspect the Display tab for the GPU and DirectX information. - In File Explorer > This PC, check the free space on the drive that contains the Steam library.
The listing requires 2 GB of free storage. Keep additional headroom rather than filling the drive to that exact number: Steam may need working space for updates and shader-cache files. The extra margin is a practical precaution, not an additional published requirement.
How to check macOS specifications
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac and confirm Monterey and the listed Intel processor and memory.
- Open System Settings > General > Storage (or About This Mac > Storage on older Monterey layouts) and verify at least 2 GB is free on the system volume.
- Check whether the Mac uses Intel Iris Graphics 6100 or another GPU. A different GPU is not automatically unsupported, but it is outside the exact minimum configuration shown by the listing.
Install the correct Steam app
The store has a distinct item named Beastfolk Barber Demo. It is a free demo, not the full game or a shortcut copied from another computer.

- Open the Steam client and search for Beastfolk Barber Demo.
- Open the listing and select Install Demo.
- After installation, open Library, select the demo’s entry, and choose Play from there.
- Let Steam finish any download, update or first-time setup before launching again.
If the Library entry has a different name, remove that shortcut and install the item whose title exactly includes “Demo.” Starting a copied executable outside Steam can bypass the client’s file and runtime setup.

Verify the demo’s installed files before reinstalling
Steam identifies corrupted extracted files as a common reason a title remains at Preparing to Launch. Verification is less disruptive than deleting the installation and should be your first file-repair step.
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Beastfolk Barber Demo and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files (the label may appear as Local Files in an older client).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check. If it reacquires files, allow that download to finish.
- Close the Properties window and launch from the Library.

- Restart Windows after the installation, then start the demo from Steam.
Do not assume that a recent Windows update installed the newest graphics driver. Conversely, do not force a driver intended for a different GPU family.

Repair DirectX and Visual C++ components
The listing specifies DirectX 11, and the topic-specific setup guidance recommends repairing DirectX and Visual C++ redistributables when a Windows launch fails. Use Microsoft’s official installers or repair options for the components already present on the computer. Restart after repair and test again.
A missing-component message should be treated as a runtime problem, not solved by downloading an isolated DLL from an unverified website. Such files can be the wrong version or contain malware.
Check Windows security blocks
If Steam reports that the executable cannot run, inspect Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history for a quarantine or block associated with the demo. Only restore or allow a file when you recognize the path and the alert is clearly a false positive; otherwise contact the game’s support channel.

Test without overlays and capture tools
Temporarily disable Steam’s in-game overlay and any GPU overlay, screen recorder or capture utility, then launch once. This is a diagnostic test rather than evidence of a confirmed Beastfolk Barber bug. If the demo starts only with an overlay disabled, re-enable tools one at a time to find the conflict.

macOS: use the supported launch path
Confirm Monterey and available space
Steam lists macOS Monterey, an Intel 2.7 GHz dual-core Core i5, 8 GB RAM, Intel Iris Graphics 6100 and 2 GB storage as the minimum configuration. An operating system older than Monterey is below the published floor. Keep free space beyond the 2 GB figure so Steam can complete updates and cache work.
Launch through Steam, not a copied app bundle
- Open the Steam client and select the demo in Library.
- Choose Play and allow Steam to perform its first-run setup.
- Do not drag an app bundle from the Steam folder to another location and start that copy; it may not have the expected client context.
Review macOS privacy prompts
macOS can block an application that has not been granted the required permission. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security after a failed attempt and look for a message offering to allow the blocked application. Approve it only when the app is the Steam-installed demo, then retry from Steam. If no prompt appears, verify the files and restart the Mac before trying again.

The official listing provides Windows and macOS minimums, not a native Linux or SteamOS specification. That means a Linux or Steam Deck launch is not guaranteed by the store page. Steam Support notes that games without Linux support may require Proton and community guidance.
- In the demo’s Steam Properties, open Compatibility and enable the Proton option only if you are prepared to test a compatibility layer.
- Try the Proton version recommended by Steam or by current community guidance for this title; Proton behavior can change as versions are updated.
- Keep the SteamOS system and graphics stack current, then verify the files from Properties > Installed Files.
- If one Proton version fails, record that version before trying another. A successful result on one Deck does not establish universal support.
A Deck that remains at Preparing to Launch may still be dealing with incomplete files rather than a Proton issue, so verification remains the first non-destructive check.

Choose the fix by symptom
The demo closes immediately
- Compare the OS, CPU, GPU, RAM and storage with the relevant Steam minimums.
- On Windows, update the graphics driver and repair DirectX and Visual C++ components.
- On macOS, confirm Monterey and launch from the Steam client.
- Disable overlays and capture software for one test launch.
- Verify the installed files if the checks above do not change the behavior.
Steam is stuck on “Preparing to Launch”
- Wait for any pending Steam download or update to finish.
- Confirm that the library drive has more than the required 2 GB free.

A black window appears

When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall only after you have checked the requirements and run file verification. A clean reinstall is reasonable when verification repeatedly reacquires the same files, the installation was interrupted, or Steam cannot complete the validation. Before uninstalling, note the library location and confirm that the drive has room for the download and temporary update data.
