If Batman: Arkham City crashes, refuses to start, shows a black screen or ignores your controller, work through the fixes in this order: update graphics and audio drivers and Windows, remove overclocks, verify the Steam installation, reset the game’s per-user configuration, then lower or disable demanding rendering features. Only after those reversible checks should you try the older PC-specific DX11 shader-cache or PhysX workarounds.

The steps below apply to the Windows GOTY release sold through Steam. They separate documented publisher guidance from community-maintained fixes, explain which changes are reversible, and show what to do for each symptom without treating a hardware purchase as a cure for every problem.

Start with the safest crash and launch fixes

WB Games identifies outdated or corrupted video and sound drivers, pending Windows or DirectX updates, overclocked hardware, damaged game files and excessive graphics load as common causes of PC crashes. Complete the following sequence before reinstalling the game or replacing files. It is deliberately ordered from the least invasive checks to the more specialized changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you start: record the symptom and protect your files

Note whether the game closes immediately, reaches a splash screen, reaches the main menu, or fails only in a particular scene. Record whether the display is black while audio continues, whether an error appears, and whether the controller is visible in Steam. These distinctions determine which branch below is relevant. Exit the game before changing files, and make a separate copy of your saves and the Batman Arkham City GOTY folder. Test one category of change at a time; otherwise you cannot tell which step helped.

1. Update graphics, audio and Windows components

  1. Install the current graphics driver from your GPU or computer manufacturer.
  2. Install the current audio driver supplied for your motherboard, laptop or sound card.
  3. Run Windows Update until no important updates remain, then restart.
  4. Launch Arkham City again before changing several other settings at once.

WB Games specifically calls out video and sound drivers and DirectX as common crash causes. A driver problem can prevent the game from reaching its menu, so this step applies to an immediate crash, a failed launch and a window that closes after the introductory splash. Restarting after updates gives Windows an opportunity to load the new components. If the symptom is unchanged, continue rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers.

2. Return every overclock to factory settings

Temporarily undo GPU, CPU and memory overclocks, including automatic turbo or performance profiles in the motherboard or graphics utility. Run the game at manufacturer defaults while diagnosing it. A system that is stable in other games can still fail in this older port because its rendering and PhysX workloads behave differently. Keep a note of the original profile so you can restore it after testing. If the game becomes stable at stock settings, the overclock—not necessarily the game installation—was part of the failure.

3. Verify the Steam installation

  1. Open Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Batman: Arkham City GOTY and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files (called Local Files in some Steam versions).
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the operation to finish.
  5. Start the game again. Reinstall only if verification reports a problem that it cannot repair.

Verification checks whether the files expected by the Steam client are present and intact. It is faster and less disruptive than deleting the installation, and it preserves your existing saves and configuration. If a later shader-cache experiment changes files, verification is also the clean way to restore the Steam versions. A reinstall is a last resort after verification, because it removes a large installation without addressing a bad driver, configuration or rendering setting.

4. Check antivirus or security software

If an antivirus product quarantined an executable or data file, restore it only when the copy is from your legitimate Steam installation and add the game to that product’s exception list. If the security suite offers a gaming mode, enable it for the test. Re-enable normal protection and remove temporary exceptions if they do not solve the problem. Do not disable security broadly or trust files from an unofficial download; the exception step is intended to test a legitimate installation whose files were incorrectly blocked.

Reset Arkham City’s Windows configuration without losing saves

A corrupted per-user configuration can cause a crash or a black window even when Steam files verify correctly. The Windows configuration is stored at:

  • Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
  • Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
  1. Exit the game and Steam.
  2. Open File Explorer, paste the path into the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Copy the entire Batman Arkham City GOTY folder to a separate backup location. Back up saves before deleting or moving anything.
  4. Rename the Config folder to Config.backup.
  5. Start the game. It should generate a fresh default configuration.

Renaming, rather than deleting, makes the change reversible. If the fresh configuration fixes the launch, copy back individual settings only when needed; do not replace the whole folder immediately, or the original corruption may return. If the folder is not visible, confirm that Steam and the game are closed and that you pasted the path into your own user profile. The important point is to reset the Config directory, not to erase your backed-up saves.

Black-screen troubleshooting by where it occurs

When the screen goes black First actions More targeted action Change type
Before the main menu Update drivers and Windows/DirectX; verify Steam files; reset Config Start with a lower graphics profile after the game launches Reversible settings and file checks
After the NVIDIA or introductory splash Verify files and reset configuration Disable or reduce DX11 features; consider the shader-cache workaround Settings first; file replacement only with a backup
During a particular introductory or Iceberg Lounge scene Complete the general crash sequence Test the documented PhysX installation or disablement workaround Community-maintained compatibility step

Black screen before the menu

Start with the official sequence: update graphics and sound drivers, install pending Windows and DirectX updates, return clocks to factory values, verify Steam files, and reset the per-user configuration. If the game reaches its options, choose a lower graphics profile and relaunch. These checks address both a bad configuration and a rendering load that the legacy port cannot handle reliably on the current system. Because each step is reversible, they should be exhausted before replacing any files.

Black screen after the NVIDIA or introductory splash

When the splash appears and the window then turns black or closes, first verify files and generate a fresh configuration. Next test with DX11 features disabled or reduced. Change only the rendering group you are testing and note the result. If disabling DX11 features restores the menu, leave them reduced while you confirm that the game can load and save normally; you can later test individual options rather than turning everything back on at once.

Black screen tied to a particular scene

A failure that repeats in the introductory cutscene or at the first Iceberg Lounge visit points to the PhysX-specific workaround documented by PCGamingWiki. Complete the general steps first, then change the PhysX state as a targeted test. This is different from a black screen at every launch: scene-specific behavior is the reason to try PhysX, and it is not a current WB Games guarantee.

Lower rendering load before replacing files

If the splash screen appears and the display then turns black or the process closes, reduce graphics options and test with DX11 features disabled. Lowering the load is the least invasive way to determine whether the failure is tied to a rendering feature. Change one group of options at a time so you know which setting affects stability. Keep the successful settings recorded; that makes it easier to restore a working profile if a later experiment fails.

  • GlobalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.bin
  • GlobalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM5.bin

Use the current instructions on that community-maintained page to obtain the appropriate replacement files. Before changing anything, copy the original files to a backup folder and record their names. Do not overwrite them blindly: a mismatch can create a new launch problem, and Steam verification can restore the original files if needed. This workaround is less reversible than changing an in-game option, so use it only after drivers, verification, configuration reset and lower DX11 settings have failed. Keep the backup until you have tested the affected scene and a normal restart.

Test PhysX only for scene-specific failures

PCGamingWiki associates crashes in the introductory cutscene and at the first Iceberg Lounge visit with PhysX being installed or disabled. This is not a current WB Games guarantee; treat it as a targeted compatibility test after drivers, verification and configuration reset.

  1. Finish the general troubleshooting steps first.
  2. Change only the PhysX state recommended for your particular failure (install it if it is absent, or disable it if the crash follows an installation).
  3. Replay the affected scene.
  4. Undo the change if it has no effect or causes another problem.

Keep a note of the original state so you can return to it. Because this port is old, a workaround that helps one scene or hardware combination may not help another. Do not combine a PhysX change with a shader-cache replacement in the same test; isolate the variables.

Controller not detected or controls feel wrong

Select the input device before launching

The GOTY manual supports both keyboard/mouse and gamepad play. In Steam’s pre-game Options window, choose the input device before pressing Play. Once in the game, open Options > Controls to review mappings and adjust the Vibration setting. If the game starts with keyboard input selected, changing the pad after launch may not produce the behavior you expect, so close the game and select the intended device before trying again.

Use a clean XInput test

  1. Disconnect competing gamepads, flight sticks, wheels and virtual-input devices.
  2. Connect a wired Xbox-style XInput controller directly to the PC.
  3. Start the game with that single controller attached.
  4. In Steam’s controller settings for the game, inspect the Steam Input layout and select a standard gamepad mapping.
  5. Return to Options > Controls in Arkham City and confirm that buttons respond.

A wired XInput pad is a diagnostic fallback, not a universal fix for crashes. It removes Bluetooth adapters, low batteries and multiple input layers from the test. If it works, add other devices back one at a time to identify the conflict. If it does not work, check the pre-game device selection and Steam Input layout again before changing unrelated graphics files.

Distinguish a cursor quirk from controller failure

PCGamingWiki notes that opening menus can unhide and reposition the mouse cursor. Seeing a pointer move, disappear or reappear does not by itself prove that the controller has failed. Check whether the controller can navigate the menu and trigger an action before changing drivers or buying hardware. A cursor that becomes visible when a menu opens can be normal menu behavior rather than evidence that the game has switched permanently to mouse input.

If software checks do not detect any pad, an Xbox controller for PC is the clearest accessory fallback because the game’s manual explicitly supports gamepads and a wired XInput connection removes Bluetooth variables. Compatibility with every Bluetooth adapter and current stock is not established here, so treat the phrase as a practical hardware-search term, not a promise that every model or adapter will work.

Know the legacy requirements and modern Windows caveat

Steam lists these original GOTY requirements for the legacy release:

Component Steam’s published requirement
Operating system Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
Processor 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2 4800+
Memory 2 GB RAM
Graphics 512 MB GeForce 8800 GT or ATI 3850HD
DirectX DirectX 9.0c
Storage 17 GB free space

These are historical release requirements, not a promise that the game will work unchanged with modern drivers. Steam’s client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. A current Windows installation can therefore run the Steam client while the game itself still encounters compatibility issues inherited from its older PC code. Meeting or exceeding the old processor, memory and graphics figures does not rule out a driver, configuration, DX11 or PhysX problem.

Choose the next fix by symptom, reversibility and evidence

Symptom Recommended order Reversibility Evidence level
Crash on launch Drivers/Windows/DirectX, factory clocks, Steam verification, configuration reset High; updates and renamed folders can be reversed WB Games guidance plus PC configuration documentation
Black screen before menu General sequence, fresh configuration, lower graphics settings High WB Games guidance and PCGamingWiki path
Black screen after splash DX11 features off, then shader-cache test with backups Settings are high; cache replacement requires restoring files Community-maintained workaround
Crash in intro or Iceberg Lounge General sequence, then PhysX state test PhysX change is reversible Community-maintained workaround
Controller not detected Pre-game input selection, Controls menu, single wired XInput pad, Steam Input mapping High Official manual plus PCGamingWiki controller notes

Use the table as a decision aid rather than a list of simultaneous changes. A launch crash calls for the general sequence; a splash-specific black screen justifies the DX11 branch; a repeatable scene crash justifies the PhysX branch; and an undetected pad calls for input selection and a clean XInput test. The shader-cache replacement has the lowest reversibility, so it belongs last.

When to stop changing files

If verification, a clean configuration and reduced graphics settings do not change the symptom, restore any shader-cache backup and return PhysX and overclock settings to their original known-good states. Avoid stacking several unofficial modifications: you will lose the ability to identify which change helped and may create a second failure. At that point, document the exact crash location, whether the game reaches the menu, the driver version, the controller connection type and the steps already tested before seeking support. Keep the original configuration and cache backups until the issue is resolved.

What should I do when Arkham City shows a black screen after launch?

First verify Steam files and reset %USERPROFILE%DocumentsWB GamesBatman Arkham City GOTYBmGameConfig by renaming the folder. If the black screen follows the NVIDIA or introductory splash, test with DX11 features disabled or reduced. Only then consider the PCGamingWiki shader-cache workaround, keeping backups of both original cache files.

Can I fix an Arkham City launch failure without reinstalling?

Yes. Driver and Windows updates, removing overclocks, Steam file verification and a renamed per-user configuration are all earlier steps. Reinstall only when verification cannot repair the installation and the other reversible checks have failed.

Where is the Batman: Arkham City configuration folder?

On Windows it is %USERPROFILE%DocumentsWB GamesBatman Arkham City GOTYBmGameConfig. Rename Config to something such as Config.backup instead of deleting it, and back up saves first so the game can generate clean defaults without losing your data.

Why does Arkham City crash in the intro or at Iceberg Lounge?

PCGamingWiki documents a PhysX-specific compatibility workaround for those scene locations. After completing the general crash sequence, test the recommended PhysX state—install it if absent or disable it if the crash follows installation—and undo the change if it does not help.

How do I get a controller working in Arkham City?

Choose the gamepad in Steam’s pre-game Options window, then check Options > Controls and Vibration in the game. Disconnect other input devices, connect one wired Xbox-style XInput pad, and inspect the game’s Steam Input layout. Add other devices back one at a time after a successful test.

Is a moving mouse cursor proof that my controller is broken?

No. PCGamingWiki notes that opening menus can unhide and reposition the cursor. Test whether the controller can navigate menus and activate an option before treating cursor movement as a hardware failure.

Do the old Steam system requirements guarantee that Arkham City will run today?

No. The listed requirements—Windows XP/Vista/7, 2 GB RAM, a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2 4800+, a 512 MB GeForce 8800 GT or ATI 3850HD, DirectX 9.0c and 17 GB storage—are historical release figures. Steam’s client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024, but that does not guarantee compatibility between this older port and modern drivers.

The Bottom Line

For most crashes and failed launches, update graphics and audio drivers and Windows, remove overclocks, verify Steam files and rename the per-user Config folder before considering a reinstall. For black screens, lower graphics and disable DX11 features before touching shader-cache files; reserve the PhysX test for repeatable intro or Iceberg Lounge failures. For controller issues, select the device before launch and test one wired XInput pad with a clean Steam Input mapping. Keep backups, change one thing at a time and restore unofficial files when a test does not help.
