The Bambu Lab R1 is a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver—not a 3D printer. Announced on September 22, 2026, it has a 600 × 300 mm work area and is designed to cut several common materials, including transparent acrylic, while engraving materials such as glass. Its headline capacity, speed and alignment figures are manufacturer claims; the safety classification also depends on whether the machine is used with its standard enclosure or optional accessories.
What is the Bambu Lab R1?
Bambu Lab describes the R1 as its first standalone product outside 3D printing: an enclosed CO₂ laser cutter and engraver. The machine uses a 55 W laser and is controlled with Bambu Suite on Windows and macOS. Bambu Lab says it also shares the company’s account and MakerWorld ecosystem. Its launch description is available in Bambu Lab’s September 22, 2026 launch article.
That makes the R1 a different kind of tool from Bambu Lab’s 3D printers. Instead of building a part layer by layer, it uses a laser to cut or mark sheet materials and objects. Whether it fits a project depends chiefly on the material, its dimensions, the required cut, the chosen accessories and the machine’s safety configuration.
What materials can the R1 cut or engrave?
Bambu Lab lists wood, acrylic, leather, paper and fabric for cutting and engraving. It also lists glass, stone and coated metals for engraving. The company specifically says its CO₂ laser energy is absorbed by clear acrylic and glass, enabling the R1 to cut acrylic and engrave glass.

| Material | Capability Bambu Lab lists |
|---|---|
| Wood | Cutting and engraving |
| Acrylic, including transparent acrylic | Cutting and engraving |
| Leather, paper and fabric | Cutting and engraving |
| Glass, stone and coated metals | Engraving |
These are material categories in Bambu Lab’s launch information, not a guarantee that every material formulation, thickness or finish will work the same way. The company gives two maximum cut examples: up to 18 mm black walnut plywood and up to 20 mm acrylic. Treat those as stated examples, not universal thickness limits for all woods or acrylics, or as independently validated results. Cutting performance can depend on the specific stock and job settings; the launch article does not establish a result for every material variant.
How large a project can it handle?
The published work area is 600 × 300 mm. For longer stock, Bambu Lab says its optional Conveyor supports material up to 3,000 mm long. That figure describes supported material length with the accessory; it does not change the standard work area into a single 3,000 mm-wide work surface. The Conveyor is therefore relevant for feeding long designs through the machine, while the standard area is the more useful figure for a piece that must fit within the machine for a job.

Bambu Lab also claims a maximum processing speed of up to 1,000 mm/s. That is a company-published maximum, not a promise that every material or cut will run at that rate or finish within a predictable time.
What alignment and motion features does Bambu Lab claim?
Auto Laser Alignment
Bambu Lab says Auto Laser Alignment checks beam position and uses motorized mirror actuators to correct optical-path misalignment. The company describes the process as taking about a minute. This is a manufacturer-described calibration feature, not an independent measurement of alignment performance.

TriSense
Bambu Lab describes TriSense as combining cameras, lasers and encoders to locate material and designs, measure surface height and track motion. It says the system supports work on curved objects and alignment of designs with printed graphics to under 0.2 mm. That precision is a company claim and should be read in the context of its stated alignment use, not assumed for every operation.
Optional Vision Encoder
The separately sold Vision Encoder is described as compensating for mechanical drift and maintaining absolute motion accuracy within 0.1 mm over 600 mm of travel. If that specification matters to a project, confirm the current package and operating requirements with Bambu Lab; the launch information does not establish independent test results.

What accessories are available, and which projects need them?
Bambu Lab lists these separately sold R1 accessories: Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary attachment, medium- and long-focus lenses, Vision Encoder, E1 Pro air purifier and Auto Fire Extinguishing system. The included lens at launch was the short-focus lens. The launch article does not establish current bundle contents, so check the regional store listing before purchasing.
- Conveyor: Consider it for stock longer than the standard work area; Bambu Lab lists support for material up to 3,000 mm long. Installing it also changes the machine’s safety configuration, described below.
- Rotary attachment: Bambu Lab lists it as an accessory for the R1. The launch description does not specify supported object dimensions or compatibility details.
- Medium- and long-focus lenses: These are listed as optional lenses; the short-focus lens was included at launch.
- Vision Encoder: An optional motion-accuracy accessory with a manufacturer-stated specification of within 0.1 mm over 600 mm.
- E1 Pro air purifier: Bambu Lab says it connects to the exhaust outlet and uses multiple filter layers, including activated carbon, to capture smoke and fine particles and reduce odors. This description is not a guarantee of safe ventilation or a substitute for required exhaust practices.
- Auto Fire Extinguishing system: Listed as a separately sold fire-safety accessory; the launch information does not provide further operating specifications.
- Riser Base: Listed as an optional accessory. Installing it changes the machine from its standard enclosed safety configuration.
What does the R1’s safety classification mean?
Bambu Lab states that the R1 is Class 1 under IEC 60825-1 in standard enclosed operation. The company also says fitting either the Riser Base or Conveyor makes the enclosure incomplete and changes the device to Class 4. In that configuration, Bambu Lab says CO₂ laser safety goggles and professional use by trained personnel are required.

Do not assume the standard-enclosure classification applies after adding either accessory. Bambu Lab also describes a lid-open stop, flame sensors and an emergency stop, with the automatic fire-extinguishing system available separately. These features do not remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions, use the machine in the required configuration and provide appropriate exhaust practices.
How much did the R1 cost, and when was it due to ship?
In its September 22, 2026 launch article, Bambu Lab listed a US price of $2,499 before tax, with shipping included, and an EU price of €2,499 including tax, with shipping excluded. It said preorders began September 22 through its official store and shipping would start in October 2026. The official Bambu Lab forum announcement also gave an October shipping start and cautioned that price and availability vary by region. These are launch-period details, not confirmation of current price, stock or delivery timing; check the store for your region.
Is the Bambu Lab R1 the right kind of machine?
The R1 is worth considering if a project calls for CO₂-laser cutting or engraving in the listed material categories, especially transparent acrylic cutting or glass engraving. Its 600 × 300 mm work area suits projects that fit within that footprint; the optional Conveyor addresses longer stock but changes the safety classification according to Bambu Lab.
Before choosing it, compare alternatives on the material and finish you need, usable work area, supported stock length, thickness and speed for the specific material, alignment and motion requirements, enclosure configuration, ventilation, software workflow, included accessories and regional price. Bambu Lab’s launch article explains its distinction from diode lasers for transparent acrylic and glass, but does not establish comparative competitor specifications or performance, so it is not enough to rank other machines.
