Choose PC if your computer meets Larian’s requirements and you want adjustable settings or supported mods; choose PS5 or Xbox for a console-first setup; choose Steam Deck if handheld play matters more than split-screen. PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox now support cross-play and cross-platform progression, so matching a friend’s platform is less important than it used to be.
Which platform should you choose?

Before buying, weigh the hardware you already own and the cost of any new hardware against how you plan to play. Consider whether you need split-screen, whether your friends play on other platforms, whether mods matter to you, and—on PC—whether your system and storage meet the requirements.
How cross-play and cross-platform progression work
Larian’s Patch 8 announcement says PC, Mac, Xbox, and PS5 players can play multiplayer together and share cross-platform progression through the Larian Network. You need to connect your platform account to a Larian account and enable “Allow Cross-Play.” Saves intended for cross-play may also require cross-play to be enabled.
When a multiplayer lobby uses mods, everyone joining must have compatible versions of the same mods. Third-party mods cannot be used on consoles, so a modded PC session may not be suitable for console players. See Larian’s cross-play setup instructions.

What cross-save stores—and what it does not
Cross-save is useful if you want to continue a campaign on another supported platform, but Larian’s server copies are not a permanent archive. Its account FAQ says cross-save syncs a copy of the ten most recent saves; those copies are kept for up to six months before older ones are deleted. This limit applies to copies stored on Larian’s servers, not saves kept locally on your PC or console. Keep important saves on your own device or in another backup location. Larian also notes that inactive cross-saves older than six months displayed on Larian Accounts expire on September 29, 2026. Details are in the Larian Account FAQ.
Can your Windows PC run Baldur’s Gate 3?
Larian’s published specifications are a useful compatibility check, not a promise of a particular frame rate in every area or graphics setting. The requirements below are for Windows; Larian lists macOS requirements separately on its system requirements page.

If your PC falls below the minimums, these specifications alone cannot tell you how playable the game will be. If you are buying hardware specifically for this game, compare the full system against the recommended column and check current platform options before spending.
Does platform choice still matter if your friends use another system?
Less than it did at launch: Larian’s Patch 8 announcement includes cross-play between PC, Mac, Xbox, and PS5. You still need Larian account setup, cross-play enabled, and compatible mods where applicable. Steam Deck is a way to play the PC version handheld, but it does not remove the stated split-screen limitation.

There is no like-for-like performance comparison here for PC, PS5, Xbox, and Steam Deck. Avoid choosing based on an assumed universal winner in frame rate or image quality; your PC’s components, settings, and preferred screen or play style all affect the experience.
