GnosisDAO reported about $128 million drained across chains; Balancer DAO later described roughly $8 million recovered through whitehat and internal operations for its recovery process, while StakeWise handled about $19.7 million in osETH and osGNO separately. Gnosis Chain also pursued its own recovery through a hard fork and a Merkl-powered claim portal. These are distinct processes and measures, and the available proposal record does not establish that all affected users have been made whole.
What happened in the November 2025 Balancer exploit?
GnosisDAO’s November 5, 2025 update put the loss at roughly $128 million across multiple chains, including about $9.4 million on Gnosis Chain. Balancer’s post-incident report said the theft primarily affected V5 Composable Stable Pools, a subset of legacy Balancer V2 pools. It said Balancer V3 and other V2 pool families were unaffected; vulnerable V6 Composable Stable Pools that were still within their pause window were paused.
Balancer stated: “Balancer V3 was completely unaffected by this attack.” The incident should therefore not be described as an exploit of every Balancer pool or of V3. (Sources: Balancer Protocol, “Nov 3 Exploit Post-Mortem”; GnosisDAO, “Balancer Hack: Update.”)
How much was recovered—and what do the figures mean?
Balancer DAO’s BIP-892 records approximately $8 million in user funds recovered through whitehat and internal operations across networks. The same proposal identifies approximately $19.7 million in osETH and osGNO handled separately by StakeWise. Those are separate recovery categories, not a statement that either amount was distributed in full to affected users. They should not be added to the roughly $128 million loss as if all figures measured the same thing.

There are several stages that should not be confused: assets recovered or brought under control, amounts allocated to eligible users, amounts claimed, and amounts still unclaimed. The figures above do not establish total final payouts or complete reimbursement. (Source: Balancer DAO, BIP-892.)
What is the Balancer DAO recovery route?
BIP-892 sets out an allocation framework for external recovered assets that ties eligibility to the affected pool and network. For those assets, the proposal uses a pro-rata allocation based on LPs’ pool-token holdings at specified snapshot blocks, with distributions made in the tokens recovered. It deducts a 10% bounty from eligible external whitehat recoveries; internal rescue funds are treated separately.

In July 2026, BIP-923 said approximately $920,000—roughly 500 ETH at the proposal’s time—remained unclaimed. It proposed extending the original 180-day claim period by a further six months. It also proposed postponing a decision on remaining recovered assets, including USDe and USDC rebates from Ethena and ShapeShift, until the extended period closed. The $920,000 is a dated proposal estimate, not a confirmed current balance. The accessible proposal thread links Snapshot votes but does not establish their final outcome. What an affected LP should verify
- Identify the affected pool and network; the framework is pool- and network-specific.
- Check the relevant snapshot block and whether the wallet’s pool-token holdings qualify under the proposal.
- Confirm which recovered token is being distributed and whether the amount is allocated, claimable, already claimed, or still awaiting a governance decision.
- Check the current claim window and official governance status. BIP-923’s accessible record does not confirm the final result of its proposed extension.
How Gnosis Chain’s separate recovery works
GnosisDAO described a distinct chain-level process for recoverable funds controlled by the exploiter on Gnosis Chain. Its February 2026 post says a hard fork on December 22, 2025 transferred control of those funds to a DAO-controlled Safe. GnosisDAO published affected addresses and amounts for review and later updated the post to say a claim portal powered by Merkl was open. This is separate from the Balancer DAO’s BIP-892 allocation process; the approximately $9.4 million Gnosis Chain loss is not itself a confirmed amount claimed through that portal.

If you believe you are affected on Gnosis Chain, use the official GnosisDAO “Balancer Hack: Claim Process” announcement to locate the current portal and review the listed addresses and amounts. Confirm the site is linked from the official announcement before connecting a wallet, and check the portal’s eligibility and claim details directly. The available announcement establishes that the portal was open when the post was updated, but it does not establish a current deadline or a total claimed amount.
How the two recovery routes differ
| Route | Who controls the process | Eligibility or allocation | Interface and status established by the cited records |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balancer DAO framework | Balancer DAO | External recovered assets allocated pro rata to LPs from the affected pool and network, using holdings at specified snapshot blocks; in-kind distributions. A 10% bounty applies to eligible external whitehat recoveries; internal rescue funds are treated separately. | BIP-892 establishes the framework. BIP-923 reported about $920,000 unclaimed in July 2026 and proposed a claim-period extension, but its accessible record does not establish the final Snapshot vote result or a current balance. |
| Gnosis Chain recovery | GnosisDAO through a DAO-controlled Safe | Recoverable exploiter-controlled funds on Gnosis Chain; GnosisDAO published affected addresses and amounts for review. A comparable pro-rata rule is not stated in the cited claim-process post. | GnosisDAO said the claim portal powered by Merkl was open in a later update. A current claim deadline and total claimed amount are not stated in the cited post. |
Do not confuse this with Balancer’s later V1 exploit
Balancer DAO’s September 2026 BIP-930 concerns a separate exploit of legacy V1 pools on August 31, 2026. It estimates approximately $1,393,694.67 worth of tokens were drained at attack-time prices. That event is distinct from the November 2025 V2 incident reported at roughly $128 million. (Sources: Balancer DAO, BIP-930; GnosisDAO, “Balancer Hack: Update.”)
