If an Azure VM runs out of disk space while streaming to YouTube, first identify which volume is full and what is using it. The timing alone does not prove that YouTube or the streaming application caused the growth. Remove only files you have confirmed are disposable; if cleanup cannot provide enough room, expand the Azure managed disk and then extend its volume in Windows.
1. Find the full volume and the files consuming space
Before deleting anything, determine whether the full volume is the Windows OS disk, an attached managed data disk, or the VM’s temporary disk. In Windows, check the free space shown for each drive, then inspect the largest folders and files on the affected drive. Confirm the path, size, last-modified time, and which application owns each item.
The available information does not identify the streaming application, its configured log or cache paths, or the files responsible for this VM’s disk growth. Do not assume that streaming created the problem or that a particular application directory is safe to remove. If the streaming software has its own storage or retention settings, inspect those settings and its documentation before changing or deleting files.
Check logs before removing them
Microsoft’s Azure IaaS VM logs guidance lists files that may be collected for troubleshooting with customer consent. Windows examples include Azure agent and diagnostics logs in Azure-related system locations. The list is for support collection; it does not establish that those logs are large, safe to delete, or the cause of a full disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Check your organization’s retention requirements and whether the logs are needed to diagnose an active failure. If you need support, preserve relevant logs before cleanup. Delete only identified files whose contents are no longer needed, using the owning application’s documented cleanup or retention process where possible.
2. Treat the Azure temporary disk differently
Azure’s temporary disk is not a managed disk. Microsoft describes it as short-term storage for applications and processes, with examples such as page files and SQL Server tempdb. On Windows it is drive D by default, but verify the VM configuration rather than assuming that letter identifies temporary storage.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Temporary-disk contents can be lost during maintenance, VM redeployment, or stopping the VM. Microsoft says the data persists through a successful standard restart. These lifecycle characteristics do not mean every file on the temporary disk is safe to erase: confirm what is stored there and whether the workload can regenerate it. The available documentation does not establish how a particular YouTube streaming application uses temporary files.
3. Expand the managed disk if cleanup is not enough
If the volume remains too small after safe cleanup, the Azure remedy is a two-part operation: increase the managed disk’s size in Azure, then extend the corresponding Windows volume so it can use the added capacity. Increasing the disk alone does not automatically extend the Windows partition.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Check eligibility and plan the Azure change
Follow Microsoft’s current Windows VM disk expansion guide for the affected disk. Whether the VM must be deallocated depends on the disk type, VM configuration, and applicable feature conditions; check the guide against your current setup before scheduling the change. The source guidance does not support a universal downtime claim for every configuration.
Back up important data and verify that you have selected the correct managed disk before changing its capacity. Do not attempt to reduce its size: Microsoft warns, “Shrinking an existing disk isn’t supported and might result in data loss.”

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Extend the Windows volume after the Azure resize
Once Azure reports the larger disk, extend the matching Windows volume. Microsoft’s PowerShell example for expanding Windows disks uses Get-PartitionSupportedSize to find the supported size and Resize-Partition to extend a selected drive. Verify the drive letter and target partition before running commands; do not copy a command targeting one volume to another without checking it.
If Windows does not show the added capacity, confirm that the Azure resize completed and that you are inspecting the correct disk and partition. Then follow the Windows-side expansion procedure for that disk configuration.

4. Troubleshoot the likely causes without guessing
- The OS drive is full: Identify large files and application data on that drive. Do not delete Windows, Azure agent, or streaming-software files just because they are logs or temporary-looking files; confirm their purpose and retention needs first.
- A data drive is full: Check the data disk’s actual contents and the applications configured to write there. If more capacity is required, resize that managed disk in Azure and extend its Windows volume.
- Drive D appears full: Verify that D is the VM’s temporary disk in this configuration. Establish what the workload stores there and whether it can be regenerated before clearing it.
- Azure shows a larger disk but Windows does not show more usable space: The Windows volume may not have been extended. Complete the Windows-side partition or volume expansion for the verified target.
- Space disappears again after cleanup: Recheck which files are growing and identify the owning process or application. The available sources do not establish the streaming application’s log, cache, or temporary-file behavior, so consult its configuration and documentation rather than relying on a guessed path.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the broader goal is to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, the uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
