AP reported that the co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of FlyDubai flight FZ1073 had previously been barred from flying for Oman Air over concerns about extremist views. UAE authorities described the September 30 incident as an attempted terrorist act, but the investigation has not established the co-pilot’s motive, what information FlyDubai had when it hired him, or whether any screening requirement was breached.

What happened aboard FlyDubai flight FZ1073

On September 30, 2026, flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when, according to UAE authorities, the co-pilot attacked the captain with the cockpit crash axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. The plane made an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. AP reported that 182 people were aboard.

On October 3, UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi described the incident as an attempted terrorist act. That is the government’s characterization while the investigation is ongoing, not a reported court finding or conviction. Anadolu Agency, reporting the statement carried by state-run WAM, quoted al-Shamsi as saying the investigation would examine the circumstances, motives and related connections, with final findings to be announced after necessary procedures were complete. Anadolu’s English version is a translation, not an independently verified English transcript.

What AP reported about the co-pilot’s earlier employment

AP reported that the co-pilot was an Omani national named Hamam al-Hammami, citing three people familiar with the matter, including diplomats, who spoke anonymously. AP said he was born in the United Arab Emirates. The agency reported that officials said Oman Air had barred him from flying because of concerns about extremist views and moved him to an administrative job before he was later hired by FlyDubai.

The account is attributed reporting, not a completed official finding. AP said officials did not provide details about the views that prompted the reported Oman Air decision, and the available reporting does not set out its documentary basis or exact timeline. The label “flagged” should not be read as proof that the co-pilot had a militant affiliation or had been found guilty of an offense.

What is known—and not known—about FlyDubai’s checks

AP reported that a Gulf diplomat described standard security checks before the FlyDubai hiring and suggested they may have focused on criminal convictions rather than signs of radicalization. AP also said it was unclear how extensively the co-pilot had been vetted. This account does not establish FlyDubai’s formal hiring policy, what the airline or a regulator knew, or which checks applied in this case.

FlyDubai told AP it could not comment beyond its official statements and said there were “many questions at this stage.” The reporting raises a question about whether information from the reported Oman Air decision reached those involved in the later hiring, but it does not answer that question or establish a breach of procedure.

AP’s October 2 report said Saudi, Emirati and Israeli authorities were investigating with assistance from the United States and Oman, and that the incident had prompted scrutiny of aviation-security measures. That scrutiny is not itself evidence that a particular security measure failed. The available reporting does not provide a final account of recruitment checks, flight-security decisions or the authorities’ findings.
