Use AWS Well-Architected Tool for a structured, human-led architecture review and a durable governance record. Use AWS Well-Architected Agent for continuous, environment-aware analysis and prioritized remediation when your monitored accounts have an eligible Business+ support entitlement. They are complementary rather than mutually exclusive: the Tool records decisions, risks, milestones and improvement plans, while the Agent repeatedly analyzes configured AWS environments and surfaces resource-, application- and architecture-level actions.
The short decision
Choose the AWS Well-Architected Tool when your immediate need is to review a workload with architects and engineers, answer best-practice questions, document why decisions were made, and track corrective work through governance checkpoints. It is the better fit for architecture reviews at major development milestones, launches, migrations, audits and other moments when people must discuss trade-offs and approve a plan.
Choose AWS Well-Architected Agent when you want an automated service to inspect configured accounts and Regions on an ongoing basis. It analyzes four optimization pillars—cost optimization, security, resilience and performance—and produces prioritized recommendations scoped to individual resources, applications or an overall architecture. Scheduled recommendations refresh weekly, subject to AWS’s seven-day minimum generation cooldown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse both when you need operational coverage between formal reviews. Keep the workload record, custom governance questions, milestones and accepted decisions in the Tool. Configure the Agent to detect drift, waste, risk and design issues between those reviews, then validate each suggested change and record the approved work in the Tool’s improvement workflow.

What the AWS Well-Architected Tool does
The Tool is a cloud service for measuring workloads against AWS best practices and documenting the outcome. Its central workflow is a human-led questionnaire: a team identifies a workload, works through questions associated with the relevant Well-Architected Framework lenses, records answers and explains exceptions, then reviews the risks and recommendations that AWS derives from those answers.
This process is deliberately conversational and contextual. A question may expose a design trade-off that an automated scan cannot understand, such as why a team accepted a recovery-time objective, which regulatory control drove a data-location decision, or which dependency is intentionally outside the workload boundary. The written rationale becomes part of the workload record instead of remaining in meeting notes or an individual architect’s memory.
Core outputs
- Documented answers: the team’s assessment of how the workload addresses Well-Architected practices.
- Identified risks: areas where an answer indicates a potential architectural weakness.
- Prioritized improvement plan: recommended work that the team can assign, schedule and revisit.
- Milestones: checkpoints for reviewing the workload at meaningful stages of its lifecycle.
- Custom lenses: additional technology-specific or governance questions that your organization wants to apply alongside AWS’s standard lenses.
- Cross-account sharing: a way to involve the owners and reviewers who need to contribute to a workload assessment.
A review can therefore function as both an architecture conversation and a governance artifact. AWS recommends repeating reviews at major milestones rather than treating them as a one-time certification exercise.
What AWS Well-Architected Agent does
AWS Well-Architected Agent is a preview, AI-powered cloud optimization service announced by AWS on October 1, 2026. Instead of asking a team to answer a questionnaire first, it scans the AWS accounts and Regions that you configure, interprets resource and configuration data, and generates personalized, prioritized recommendations.
You define an Agent profile with the accounts and Regions to monitor, the optimization pillars to consider, business goals, and application context. That context helps the service relate individual resources to an application or architecture rather than presenting an undifferentiated list of findings. A profile can analyze up to 100 AWS accounts. Profiles are hosted in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio) or US West (Oregon), while scans can cover all commercial AWS Regions supported by the service.
Recommendation scopes and pillars
- Resource-level: a finding tied to a specific AWS resource or configuration.
- Application-level: a recommendation spanning resources that make up an application. AWS identifies these recommendations as beta, so treat their interpretation as less mature than a finalized feature.
- Architecture-level: a broader design recommendation that can consider an entire submitted infrastructure definition.
The four pillars are cost optimization, security, resilience and performance. You can focus a profile on the goals that matter to a business, but the service remains an optimization engine rather than a replacement for architecture ownership.

Refresh behavior
Scheduled recommendation generation has a seven-day minimum cooldown. In practical terms, a recurring profile produces a weekly refresh rather than continuously recalculating after every configuration change. That cadence is useful for detecting changes between formal reviews, but it is not a real-time incident detector or a substitute for monitoring and alerting systems.

When the Tool is the better choice
You need a defensible record of decisions
Choose the Tool when reviewers must see not only what the architecture looks like, but also why it looks that way. The answer history, rationale, identified risks and improvement milestones create an auditable narrative for engineering leadership, security teams and operations.
The workload is still being designed
Early designs often contain alternatives that do not yet exist in an AWS account. A questionnaire can examine those choices before deployment, while an environment scanner has little or nothing to inspect. The Tool lets a team discuss proposed boundaries, failure modes, operational processes and governance requirements before infrastructure is created.
Your organization has custom controls
Custom lenses are important when a standard Framework lens does not capture an internal policy, regulated workload requirement or platform convention. Add those questions to the same review so an architecture decision is evaluated against both AWS guidance and your own controls.
You are preparing for a milestone
Use a Tool review before a production launch, after a major migration, when a service changes ownership, or at another governance gate. The milestone gives reviewers a fixed point at which to accept residual risk, assign improvements and decide whether the workload is ready to proceed.
When the Agent is the better choice
You need coverage between formal reviews
A weekly recommendation cycle can reveal configuration changes, unused capacity, security exposure or resilience gaps that appear after the last human review. This is especially useful in environments where many teams deploy independently and a central architecture group cannot manually inspect every change.

You want recommendations tied to real resources
The Agent can associate findings with resources and, when application context is supplied, with applications. That makes the first triage step more concrete than a generic best-practice statement: an owner can identify the affected component, assess the business impact and decide whether to remediate, accept or defer the finding.
You are evaluating infrastructure as code
For architecture reviews, the Agent accepts CloudFormation, Terraform or AWS CDK templates and returns recommendations with guidance for an updated template. This allows a team to inspect a proposed change before it is applied, although the output still requires engineering review and testing.
You have the required support entitlement
Agent access is not available on the Developer or Business support tiers listed in AWS’s entitlement table. AWS lists Business+, Enterprise On-Ramp, Enterprise Support and Unified Operations as eligible tiers. The entitlement must apply to the account boundary you configure for monitoring.

How to run a Well-Architected Tool review
- Define the workload boundary. Identify the application, accounts, Regions, data flows and dependencies that belong in the review. A clear boundary prevents answers from mixing unrelated systems.
- Select the relevant lenses. Start with the standard Well-Architected questions that apply to the workload. Add a custom lens when an internal control or technology-specific requirement must be assessed.
- Invite the right reviewers. Include the people who understand architecture, development, security, operations and business requirements. Cross-account sharing can bring workload owners into the same review.
- Answer questions with evidence and rationale. Record the current implementation, not the intended future state. Where a practice is not met, explain the constraint and the risk it creates.
- Review the generated risks and recommendations. AWS evaluates the answers and returns a prioritized improvement plan. Confirm that each item applies to the workload and adjust its owner or priority to match your operating reality.
- Turn improvements into milestones. Assign accountable owners, target dates and a milestone at which the work will be checked. Revisit the assessment after significant changes rather than waiting for an annual exercise.
The Tool does not perform the remediation for you. Its value is the consistency of the review, the quality of the written decision record and the ability to track whether identified work was actually completed.
How to configure and use the Agent
- Confirm eligibility. Verify that the account boundary you intend to monitor has Business+, Enterprise On-Ramp, Enterprise Support or Unified Operations. Developer and Business support tiers do not provide Agent access according to AWS’s entitlement table.
- Plan the profile boundary. Decide which of your accounts and Regions should be analyzed, which optimization pillars matter, and how applications map to resources. One profile can analyze up to 100 accounts.
- Choose a supported hosting Region. Agent profiles are hosted in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio) or US West (Oregon). Hosting location does not restrict the scan to that Region; the service can scan all commercial AWS Regions it supports.
- Create the IAM roles. AWS documents an access role and an execution role. The access policy is read-only for resource metadata and configuration, while the execution role assumes the access roles needed to inspect the configured accounts.
- Add business and application context. State the outcomes you care about and identify application groupings. Better context helps recommendations reflect business priorities instead of treating every finding as equally important.
- Run an initial analysis. Review the first set of resource-, application- and architecture-level recommendations for scope, severity and relevance. Application-level recommendations are beta and deserve particularly careful validation.
- Schedule recurring generation. Set a cadence that respects the seven-day minimum cooldown. Use the weekly refresh to identify changes and new recommendations, not as a real-time control loop.
- Route findings to owners. Assign each accepted recommendation to the team that can change the resource, application or template. Record the decision and expected outcome in your normal change-management system and, where appropriate, in the Tool.
Infrastructure-as-code reviews: what the Agent can and cannot do
The Agent’s architecture review accepts CloudFormation, Terraform and AWS CDK templates. Its output includes recommendations and guidance for an updated template, which can be useful before a pull request is merged or a platform module is published.
That capability does not make the Agent an IaC compiler, policy gate or complete static analyzer. A recommendation may depend on runtime traffic, data sensitivity, recovery objectives or organizational controls that are not expressed in a template. Validate the proposed change with your normal unit tests, plan or synthesis step, security checks, integration tests and deployment review.

Keep the original template and the Agent’s suggested change together in version control. If the recommendation is rejected, document the reason—such as cost, compatibility, latency or an accepted risk—so a later reviewer does not repeatedly reopen the same decision.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Remediation: automation versus AI-generated procedures
Some recommendations derived from Trusted Advisor have pre-built AWS Systems Manager (SSM) Runbooks. AWS describes these as deterministic automation: the steps are predefined and can be executed through the documented runbook process after the required permissions and approvals are in place.
Other Agent findings provide AI-generated guided actions for the AWS console, CLI, SDK or IaC. AWS warns that generated standard operating procedures can contain errors or incomplete information. Treat them as drafts, not as commands to run blindly in production.
- Check the affected account, Region, resource identifier and dependency chain.
- Read every command and parameter; remove broad permissions and destructive steps that are not required.
- Test the procedure in a non-production environment or with a reversible change.
- Confirm backups, rollback steps, maintenance windows and owner approval before execution.
- Capture the final change and its result in your change record and Well-Architected improvement plan.
Cost and entitlement differences
AWS states that there is no additional charge for the AWS Well-Architected Tool; you pay for the underlying AWS resources that your workloads use. The Tool’s review, lens and improvement-plan functions do not add a separate Tool service fee.
Agent availability is tied to a support entitlement. Business+, Enterprise On-Ramp, Enterprise Support and Unified Operations are listed as eligible, while Developer and Business are not. Support-plan charges apply separately. The cited AWS material establishes eligibility but does not state a separate Agent service price, so do not describe Agent as free or quote an invented per-account rate.
Can you use both services together?
Yes. AWS explicitly documents simultaneous use of the manual Tool workflow and the Agent’s automated analysis. A practical operating pattern is:

- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Establish the baseline in the Tool. Create the workload record, select lenses, answer questions and document known constraints.
- Set governance milestones. Decide when the architecture will be reviewed again and which improvements must be complete before each milestone.
- Configure the Agent. Add eligible accounts and Regions, define business goals and application context, and set up the documented IAM roles.
- Triage weekly recommendations. Classify findings as accepted work, accepted risk, false positive or requires-more-information. Route valid work to owners.
- Validate before production. Review any generated procedure, test the change and use deterministic SSM Runbooks only when their prerequisites and scope are understood.
- Update the governance record. Record accepted changes, residual risks and new decisions in the Tool’s improvement workflow, then use the next milestone review to reassess the workload.
This division prevents two common failures: relying on a questionnaire that becomes stale after deployment, or relying on automated findings without recording why a team accepted or rejected them.
Preview limitations and risk controls
Agent is a preview service, and application-level recommendations are beta. Expect behavior, coverage and recommendation quality to evolve. Keep a human accountable for architecture and production changes, particularly when a finding crosses application boundaries or conflicts with an explicit business objective.
The Agent’s scan is also bounded by what you configure and what its supported integrations can observe. An absent account, Region, resource type or application relationship can produce an incomplete picture. Review profile membership and IAM permissions when results appear unexpectedly sparse.
There is no independent performance benchmark, adoption statistic or customer-success figure established for this comparison. The concrete limits documented by AWS are the 100-account profile maximum, three profile-hosting Regions, all-commercial-Region scan coverage, the seven-day generation cooldown and the support-tier eligibility table.
A practical choice checklist
- Choose the Tool first if you need stakeholder discussion, a written architecture rationale, custom governance questions or milestone-based approval.
- Choose the Agent first if you have eligible support, a defined multi-account boundary and a need for recurring, resource-aware recommendations.
- Choose both if the Tool is your governance system and you want the Agent to discover actionable changes between reviews.
- Do not choose Agent solely for automatic execution: AI-generated procedures require review, testing and approval.
- Do not treat a weekly Agent refresh as real-time monitoring or incident response.
- Do not treat a completed Tool questionnaire as proof that a rapidly changing environment remains compliant; refresh it at meaningful milestones.
