Short answer: AWS Well-Architected Agent is an AI-powered public-preview service announced on October 1, 2026. It analyzes AWS resources, applications, and infrastructure-as-code against cost optimization, security, resilience, and performance goals. AWS has not announced a separate Agent price. Access requires an eligible AWS Support plan—Business+ or higher in every account inside the monitoring boundary—and the service remains subject to beta limitations and human review.
The Agent can monitor up to 100 AWS accounts in one profile, review workloads in any commercial AWS Region, and host profiles only in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), or US West (Oregon). Architecture reviews accept Terraform, CloudFormation, and AWS CDK templates.
What AWS Well-Architected Agent does
AWS Well-Architected Agent continuously analyzes AWS infrastructure and turns findings into prioritized recommendations aligned with business goals. Its scope is broader than a checklist review: it can identify issues at the level of an individual resource, a complete application, or an infrastructure-as-code architecture.

The four optimization pillars
- Cost optimization: recommendations intended to reduce unnecessary or poorly matched AWS spending.
- Security: findings related to protecting identities, data, networks, and workloads.
- Resilience: improvements intended to keep applications available and recoverable.
- Performance: changes aimed at improving efficiency, latency, or capacity behavior.
AWS documentation identifies these four pillars as the Agent’s optimization framework. The service can target resources such as EC2 instances, Lambda functions, and RDS databases. At the application level, it considers related resources together instead of treating each resource as an isolated object. Architecture recommendations analyze an infrastructure-as-code project.

What a recommendation can contain
The October 1, 2026 preview announcement says proposed fixes may include Systems Manager (SSM) runbooks, prescriptive command-line scripts, guided console walkthroughs, and updated infrastructure-as-code templates where applicable. These are suggested implementation paths, not an automatic guarantee that every finding will have a one-click fix.
Because the output is AI-generated, AWS tells customers to thoroughly review every recommendation before taking action. Validate the proposed change against your application’s dependencies, data-retention rules, deployment process, recovery objectives, and security approvals.
How much does AWS Well-Architected Agent cost?
No separate Agent price has been announced. AWS’s public-preview announcement and user guide do not state a per-use fee or a subscription price. An October 1, 2026 AWS Builder Center article describes the public position as “No pricing has been announced.” That does not mean using the surrounding AWS environment is free: Support-plan fees and charges from other AWS services remain separate.

Eligibility is controlled by the AWS Support tier on every account included in the monitoring boundary. AWS’s onboarding guidance requires an active plan at Business+ or higher in each monitored account.

If an organization mixes support tiers, check each account that will be monitored. A qualifying plan in the management account alone is not enough when another account in the boundary is below the requirement.
Cost Explorer charges
Cost Explorer integration is optional and makes cost recommendations more specific. If Cost Explorer is not enabled, AWS says the Agent estimates costs from public AWS pricing. Cost Explorer API requests and resource-level granular-data preferences can incur charges, even though the Cost Explorer console itself has no charge. Treat those possible API and data-granularity costs as separate from the unannounced Agent price.
Which AWS workloads and Regions are supported?
Account coverage and Region behavior
One Agent profile can monitor up to 100 AWS accounts. The profile itself is hosted in one of three Regions named for the public preview:
- US East (N. Virginia)
- US East (Ohio)
- US West (Oregon)
Hosting is limited to those three locations during the preview, but the workloads being onboarded can reside in any commercial AWS Region. The hosting Region therefore does not restrict your application to North America; it determines where the Agent profile is managed.

Application-level coverage
An application context tells the Agent what it is evaluating. AWS allows context fields for:
- Application overview
- Accounts and Regions
- Tags
- AWS services and resource types
- Industry and application type
- Criticality
- Architecture overview
- Additional context
Use this information to define boundaries and business priorities. For example, identifying a workload as business-critical gives the recommendation engine context that a small availability improvement may matter more than a modest savings opportunity. AWS also warns that some resource types are unsupported, so confirm the current unsupported-resource list before promising coverage for a particular service or configuration.

You can provide an Amazon S3 URI or upload a single document. The output is an architecture recommendation, with an updated template where applicable. This workflow is different from continuous resource monitoring: it evaluates the template you submit, so keep the submitted version aligned with the code you intend to deploy.

What you need before setup
A profile is mandatory before you can view personalized recommendations or run an architecture review. Several prerequisites can prevent a profile from becoming usable even when the console appears configured.
- An eligible AWS Support plan in every monitored account.
- At least one application context when you want scheduled recommendations.
- Cross-account IAM execution and access roles configured for the monitored accounts.
- Organization service-control policies (SCPs) that allow profile creation and resource scanning.
- Resource types that are supported by the current Agent implementation.
How to configure the Agent
- Confirm support eligibility. Inventory every account that will be inside the monitoring boundary and verify Business+, Enterprise On-Ramp, Enterprise Support, or Unified Operations is active in each one. Accounts on Developer or Business plans will not satisfy the requirement.
- Choose a hosting Region. Create the profile in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), or US West (Oregon). You can then onboard workloads from any commercial AWS Region.
- Create the cross-account roles. Follow AWS’s onboarding flow to create the required IAM execution and access roles in the relevant accounts. Check trust policies, permissions, and the account list before scanning.
- Check organization guardrails. Review SCPs for explicit denies affecting the Agent’s profile operations, IAM role use, or resource discovery. An organization-level deny can block creation or produce an apparently empty scan.
- Add application context. Enter the application’s accounts, Regions, tags, services, resource types, criticality, architecture overview, and other context. At least one application context is required for scheduled recommendations.
- Enable Cost Explorer if needed. This is optional. It can improve cost specificity, but API requests and resource-level daily-granularity preferences may add charges.
- Wait for initial data. AWS says a correctly configured profile begins generating scheduled recommendations within 24 hours. Cost Explorer data can take up to 24 hours to appear, while resource-level daily-granularity data can take up to 48 hours to propagate.
When recommendations appear and what they cover

Scheduled recommendations depend on a valid profile and application context. Without at least one application context, AWS says the profile is invalid for scheduled generation and scheduled recommendations do not run. Architecture reviews are on demand, so they follow the submission workflow rather than the scheduled-monitoring cadence.
Preview limitations you should plan for
Application recommendations are beta
AWS describes application-level recommendations as a new format currently in beta and says it is actively seeking customer feedback on their quality and relevance. Treat application findings as useful decision support, not as a finished automated approval system.
Every AI recommendation needs review
Review the evidence, scope, estimated effect, and rollback path before applying a suggestion. A script or updated template can be syntactically valid while still conflicting with an application’s availability target, compliance control, deployment pipeline, or maintenance window.

Unsupported resources limit coverage
The Agent does not promise universal coverage for every AWS resource type. A scan may therefore be complete for supported resources while omitting an unsupported service. Confirm the current unsupported-resource documentation when defining the application’s scope.
No preview end date is stated
The public materials reviewed do not provide a preview end date or a general-availability commitment. Availability, behavior, supported resources, and pricing may change before a production release.
Data is not immediate
Allow the documented 24-hour scheduled-recommendation window, up to 24 hours for Cost Explorer data, and up to 48 hours for resource-level daily-granularity data before treating an empty or incomplete result as a configuration failure.
AWS Well-Architected Agent versus AWS Well-Architected Tool
The Agent does not simply replace the existing AWS Well-Architected Tool. They address different review styles and have different maturity and access conditions.

Use the Agent when you need automated analysis across accounts, resource-level findings, application context, or IaC review and you can meet the Support-plan requirement. Use the Well-Architected Tool when a team wants a structured manual review, custom lenses, or a process that does not depend on preview-stage AI recommendations. Many organizations can use both: the Agent can surface candidates for improvement, while engineers validate decisions through a formal review.
Practical troubleshooting checklist
No profile or personalized recommendations
- Confirm that the profile was created in one of the three supported hosting Regions.
- Check that every monitored account has an eligible Support plan.
- Verify the cross-account IAM execution and access roles.
- Look for SCP explicit denies affecting profile creation or resource scanning.
Scheduled recommendations never start
- Ensure at least one application context exists; without it, AWS marks the profile invalid for scheduled generation.
- Allow the full 24-hour initial-generation period after configuration.
- Check that the application context points to the intended accounts, Regions, tags, and supported resource types.
Cost findings are missing or too general
- Without Cost Explorer, the Agent estimates costs from public AWS pricing rather than your detailed usage data.
- If Cost Explorer was enabled recently, allow up to 24 hours for data availability.
- For resource-level daily granularity, allow up to 48 hours for propagation.
- Review Cost Explorer API and granular-data settings for possible charges.
An architecture review fails or omits content
- Submit one supported Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK document, or provide its Amazon S3 URI.
- Confirm that the URI is readable by the configured roles.
- Separate template-analysis expectations from resource-monitoring coverage; they are different workflows.
Is AWS Well-Architected Agent ready for production use?
It is usable as a preview-stage analysis aid when the organization accepts Support-plan requirements, delayed data, unsupported-resource gaps, and mandatory human validation. It is not yet a fully mature substitute for engineering judgment or a formal architecture review. The safest operating model is to treat findings as prioritized hypotheses, test changes in a controlled environment, and retain the existing review and change-management process.
