Short answer: The best alternative depends on what you need to automate. Use the AWS Well-Architected Tool for a repeatable, human-governed review record; 6pillars AUTOMATE+ for AWS-directory-listed workflow automation and optional remediation; nOps when cost governance drives the review; the AWS Samples well-architected-iac-analyzer for a self-hosted, customizable IaC check; and an AWS-validated partner or consultant when undocumented constraints require expert judgment. Keep the AWS Well-Architected Agent for cases where you want AWS to analyze CDK or Terraform from Amazon S3 and return updated templates with prioritized, remediation-ready recommendations.
The Agent is an AWS service in preview, so it should complement—not replace—change control, testing, and an auditable review process. Its architecture-review path is specifically IaC-focused, while the alternatives cover governance, multi-account operations, cost management, self-hosting, or human advice that the Agent does not fully provide.
What the AWS Well-Architected Agent does—and where its boundaries are
AWS describes the Well-Architected Agent as an AI-powered service that analyzes an AWS environment across cost, security, performance, and resilience. It uses declared business goals to rank recommendations, so the output is intended to be more contextual than a generic checklist. AWS also describes remediation-ready, automation-oriented changes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For on-demand architecture reviews, the documented workflow accepts infrastructure-as-code projects written in AWS CDK or Terraform from Amazon S3. The service evaluates those templates against the AWS Well-Architected Framework and can return updated templates in the source language. You select the Well-Architected pillars to review rather than receiving an unbounded scan of every concern.

| Agent architecture-review detail | Documented limit or behavior |
|---|---|
| Accepted project types | AWS CDK and Terraform projects uploaded from Amazon S3 |
| ZIP upload limit | Up to 25 MB per ZIP |
| S3 folder limit | Up to 100 MB total, with no individual file larger than 1 MB |
| Review framework | AWS Well-Architected lens with selected pillars |
| Output | Recommendations and updated templates in the source language, described by AWS as deployment-ready fixes |
| Quota | Five architecture reviews per day per profile |
These limits matter operationally. A monolithic repository may need to be split into reviewable packages, and a team running many account or pull-request checks can hit the daily profile quota. The generated template is still a proposed change: run it through normal code review, security testing, policy checks, and deployment controls before applying it.

AWS Well-Architected Tool: the governance-first alternative
The AWS Well-Architected Tool is the strongest choice when the deliverable is a defensible review record rather than an automatically edited template. AWS organizes work into workloads, lenses, and milestones. Teams answer questions, record risks, assign owners, and revisit decisions as the system changes.
Use it when a person must approve the decision
- You need named owners and due dates for high-risk items.
- Auditors or customers expect saved answers, milestones, and evidence.
- Your architecture uses a custom lens or organization-specific control set.
- The important constraints are business, regulatory, or operational and cannot be inferred from IaC.
What it does better than an IaC-only scan
A template can show configuration, but it rarely captures recovery objectives, data residency decisions, staffing limits, or accepted residual risk. The Tool gives reviewers a place to document those decisions and to distinguish an unanswered question from a consciously accepted exception. AWS launch material also confirms that the existing Tool remains available for manual evaluations and user-defined lenses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere it falls short for remediation automation
The Tool guides the review and records findings; it does not promise to rewrite your Terraform or CDK. Teams must translate findings into issues, pull requests, or runbook changes. That extra step is worthwhile when approval and traceability matter more than speed, but it is a limitation for teams seeking a one-click repair loop.
6pillars AUTOMATE+: workflow automation around the AWS review process
AWS’s partner directory describes 6pillars AUTOMATE+ as automating the creation of Well-Architected test workloads, detecting workload posture, and autofilling review questions. It also describes safe, opt-in self-healing and auto-remediation. Those capabilities make it the clearest third-party candidate for organizations repeating similar reviews across many accounts or customers.

Why teams consider it
- It can reduce repetitive questionnaire work when accounts follow a standard pattern.
- Posture detection can provide a starting point before a human validates the answers.
- Opt-in remediation introduces a control point instead of silently changing production.
- It is positioned as workflow automation around the AWS Well-Architected process rather than as an unrelated scanner.
Questions to verify before adopting
Partner-directory descriptions are not a substitute for a current technical evaluation. Confirm which AWS accounts, regions, lenses, and resource types are supported; whether remediation creates pull requests, changes through an approved role, or uses another mechanism; how rollback works; and how findings map back to AWS Well-Architected Tool records. Obtain current commercial terms and data-handling details directly from the provider.
nOps and FinOps-led platforms
A 2026 comparison lists nOps as a cloud-operations platform with cost-optimization capabilities and a Well-Architected review module. This route fits organizations where architecture quality is evaluated alongside spend visibility, rightsizing, tagging, and operational governance.
When the FinOps angle is decisive
If the trigger for a review is an unexpected bill, idle capacity, or inconsistent tagging, a platform that starts with financial and operational data may get to an actionable backlog faster than a pure questionnaire. It can help connect a Well-Architected concern to an owner responsible for budgets and account hygiene.
Keep the evidence boundary clear
The Well-Architected feature is secondary evidence in the available product information. Verify the current product page for supported lenses, account coverage, exports, ticketing, and whether recommendations modify IaC or only report findings. Do not assume that a cost recommendation is a complete security, reliability, or performance review.
AWS Samples well-architected-iac-analyzer: a customizable open-source baseline
AWS Samples publishes well-architected-iac-analyzer, an open-source project for evaluating infrastructure code and architecture diagrams against AWS Well-Architected best practices. It is useful when engineers need to inspect IaC before deployment, integrate checks into an internal pipeline, or change the rules to match local standards.

Advantages
- No managed-service workflow is required; your team controls where analysis runs and what data it receives.
- Pipeline integration can make architecture checks part of pull-request review.
- Rules and output handling can be adapted to internal naming, policy, or evidence requirements.
Responsibilities you assume
- Maintain the runtime, dependencies, and integrations.
- Track AWS service changes and decide when checks are outdated.
- Validate findings against the current Well-Architected guidance rather than treating sample rules as a complete framework implementation.
- Build your own ownership, ticketing, approval, exception, and rollback process.
This is a practical engineering component, not a managed replacement for the Agent or the AWS Well-Architected Tool. Its value is control and extensibility, not guaranteed coverage or turnkey remediation.
The Tool Desk

AWS maintains a directory of technically validated partner solutions integrated with the Well-Architected Tool. Consultant-led reviews remain appropriate when the architecture includes undocumented constraints, regulated workloads, organizational trade-offs, or a requirement for independent sign-off.
What a consultant adds
- Interviews that uncover constraints absent from templates and diagrams.
- Trade-off analysis for availability, recovery objectives, data protection, and operating-model decisions.
- Implementation support, workshops, and a prioritized remediation roadmap.
- Independent evidence for a customer, board, regulator, or acquisition process.
What you give up
Consulting cost and scheduling are less predictable than a software workflow, and results can vary with the individual reviewer. Define the scope, deliverables, evidence format, ownership of follow-up, and treatment of confidential data in the statement of work. A consultant can also combine the AWS Tool with automated scans rather than forcing a choice between people and software.

How to run an AWS Agent IaC architecture review safely
- Prepare a reviewable project. Select the CDK or Terraform root and include the modules, variables, provider configuration, and diagrams needed to understand dependencies. Remove secrets and unrelated files before packaging.
- Meet the upload limits. Use a ZIP no larger than 25 MB, or an Amazon S3 folder no larger than 100 MB in total. Every file in the S3-folder option must be 1 MB or smaller.
- Upload to Amazon S3. Place the review package in a controlled bucket and record the commit or version identifier so the result can be reproduced.
- Create the architecture review. In the Agent workflow, choose the Well-Architected lens and the pillars relevant to the decision. Submitting more reviews than the documented five-per-day-per-profile quota allows will require scheduling or a different approved profile.
- State the business goals accurately. Goals such as recovery time, data protection, latency, or cost ceiling influence how recommendations are ranked. Do not enter a goal that the service is not authorized to use as a decision constraint.
- Inspect findings and generated templates. Check that resource references, variables, modules, regions, and provider versions survived the transformation. Treat every change as a proposed patch, even when AWS describes the output as deployment-ready.
- Test outside production. Run formatting, validation, security scanning, policy checks, unit tests, integration tests, and a plan or synthesized-template diff in an isolated account.
- Approve and deploy through normal controls. Require code review, change approval, backup or rollback preparation, and post-deployment verification. Save the original input, generated output, review date, selected pillars, and accepted exceptions.
How to combine an alternative with the Agent
These tools are not mutually exclusive. A practical layered model uses a fast IaC check on every change, a deeper Agent review for significant architecture revisions, and the AWS Well-Architected Tool for the durable record.
- Pull-request stage: run the AWS Samples analyzer or an equivalent internal policy check against changed CDK, Terraform, and diagrams.
- Design stage: submit a bounded project to the Agent when a new service, data path, region, or recovery strategy is introduced.
- Governance stage: record decisions, owners, milestones, and exceptions in the AWS Well-Architected Tool.
- Operations stage: use 6pillars AUTOMATE+ or a FinOps-led platform when posture, account scale, or cost signals require recurring workflows.
- Escalation stage: bring in a validated partner when evidence is incomplete, the workload is regulated, or the organization needs independent sign-off.

Choose the Agent when
Your infrastructure is represented in CDK or Terraform, the review can be packaged within the S3 limits, and generated source-language changes would materially shorten remediation.
Choose 6pillars AUTOMATE+ when
You repeat standardized reviews across many AWS accounts and want posture detection, question autofill, and explicitly approved remediation in one workflow.
Choose nOps when
FinOps signals—spend, rightsizing, tagging, and operational hygiene—are the main reason architecture work is being prioritized, subject to confirming the current Well-Architected feature set.
Choose the AWS Samples analyzer when
You need a customizable, self-hosted control in CI/CD and have engineers willing to maintain rules, dependencies, and evidence handling.
Choose a consultant or partner when
The decisive facts live outside code: regulatory interpretation, organizational responsibilities, undocumented dependencies, or a need for independent assurance.

Common failure modes and fixes
IaC does not represent the deployed environment
Drift can make a clean template review misleading. Export or inventory live resources, reconcile them with source control, and review the drift separately before trusting generated changes.
Generated remediation is applied without a diff review
Require a pull request or equivalent approval, inspect destructive changes, and test in a non-production account. Preserve the pre-change template and a rollback path.
The review package is too large
Split unrelated stacks, remove build artifacts, and use the S3-folder format while keeping each file at or below 1 MB and the folder total at or below 100 MB. Keep a manifest linking each package to its source commit.

Reserve Agent reviews for architecture-changing events rather than every commit. Use a lightweight analyzer for routine changes and schedule the five-per-day-per-profile allowance for approved review windows.
Posture automation answers questions incorrectly
Require a human to verify inferred answers, especially for recovery objectives, data classification, and accepted risk. Record corrections in the governance system instead of silently overriding them.
A sample project is mistaken for a supported product
Assign ownership for updates, pin dependencies, test the analyzer against representative stacks, and document which controls it does not cover.
Implementation checklist
- Define whether the review targets live resources, IaC, diagrams, human decisions, or all four.
- Choose the system of record for findings, owners, milestones, exceptions, and evidence.
- Classify which recommendations may be automated and which require architecture-board approval.
- Set package-size, secret-scanning, and source-version checks before an Agent submission.
- Measure useful outcomes such as time to validated fix, unresolved high-risk items, drift reduction, and review completion—not just the number of findings.
- Revalidate third-party integrations, supported AWS services, data handling, and commercial terms before signing a contract.
Bottom line
No single alternative covers every review mode. The AWS Well-Architected Tool is the dependable governance anchor; the Agent is the most direct path from supported CDK or Terraform input to prioritized, remediation-ready templates; 6pillars AUTOMATE+ targets repeatable posture and remediation workflows; nOps fits FinOps-led operations; the AWS Samples analyzer gives engineers a customizable pipeline component; and consultants supply judgment where code cannot. Select based on the evidence you need, the level of automation you can safely approve, and who will own the resulting fixes.
