1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a straightforward YouTube Live broadcast of a prerecorded video, OBS is the more direct option. OBS can play a media file in a scene and send the resulting live stream to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a desktop player or encoder: in AWS’s live architecture, an upstream service such as MediaLive sends it a stream, and MediaPackage packages and originates outputs for players or CDNs. Use the AWS route when those managed cloud-processing and delivery features solve a real requirement—not just to play one file on YouTube.
A prerecorded file sent through YouTube Live is still a live broadcast, distinct from uploading the file as a normal YouTube video. This comparison focuses on that live-broadcast use case.
What each product does
OBS: playback, production, and streaming from a computer
OBS is desktop streaming and production software. Add a media source to a scene, configure the stream, and send the live output to YouTube. The computer running OBS and its network connection need to remain available for the broadcast. OBS documents how to add media sources to scenes in its Media Sources guide.
MediaPackage: cloud packaging and origination
A MediaPackage live channel is an entry point for a stream from an upstream encoder. MediaPackage then provides packaged outputs through origin endpoints; it is not itself the local-file player or live encoder. AWS describes the live flow as an upstream encoder, such as MediaLive, sending a stream to MediaPackage, after which a device or CDN requests an endpoint output. See AWS’s live content documentation and live processing flow.

Which should you choose?
| Requirement | OBS-led route | AWS MediaPackage route |
|---|---|---|
| Play one prerecorded file as a YouTube Live broadcast | Direct fit: play the file as a scene source and stream from OBS. | MediaPackage does not play or encode the local file; an upstream component must send it a live stream. |
| Package a live feed for playback by players or a CDN | Not MediaPackage’s role. | MediaLive or another upstream encoder can feed MediaPackage, which can package outputs such as HLS and DASH. See AWS’s supported inputs and outputs. |
| Send a live stream to YouTube | Configure OBS using the ingest details shown for the event in YouTube Live Control Room. | AWS has documented MediaLive workflow options for social-platform outputs including YouTube; verify current service support and configuration before designing around it. |
| Setup and operating costs | Fewer cloud components for a desktop-only workflow, but a capable host and network are required. | More services and configuration. AWS’s RTMPS example says its resources are not covered by Free Tier and incur charges while running; check current regional pricing. |
Decision rule: start with OBS when the goal is one file, one YouTube Live broadcast, and local playback control. Consider MediaPackage as part of an AWS pipeline when managed cloud ingest/origination and packaged outputs justify the extra services, configuration, and usage costs.
Stream a prerecorded file to YouTube Live with OBS
Labels and available options can vary by OBS version and YouTube account. Use the current YouTube Live Control Room for event-specific ingest details, and consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for current resolution and bitrate guidance rather than relying on old presets.

- Create or open a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event. Check that live streaming is available for your channel and follow any eligibility or activation prompts YouTube displays.
- Get the event’s ingest details. In the event’s stream settings, use the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Prefer entering it in OBS’s stream settings rather than exposing it in a scene or recording.
- Prepare the file in OBS. Open a scene and add a media source, then select the prerecorded video. Configure whether it should restart when the source becomes active and whether it should loop, according to the intended broadcast. Preview the scene and check that the video and audio play correctly. For a single play-through, do not enable looping; for a continuous repeat, enable it and test the transition at the end of the file.
- Set the stream connection. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter or connect the event’s server and stream key as appropriate for the installed version. Confirm the selected service and destination before going live.
- Choose output settings. In Settings > Video and Output, choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your computer, upload connection, and YouTube’s current guidance can support. Set a keyframe interval that matches YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. There is no single best bitrate for every resolution and frame rate; use the values on YouTube’s current settings page and avoid exceeding your stable upload capacity.
- Run a preflight check. Confirm the correct scene and file, monitor audio, verify that OBS reports a stable connection, and check the event preview in Live Control Room. Make sure the content and music are cleared for livestream use. When ready, start streaming in OBS and confirm that the event has received the stream before treating it as live.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop streaming in OBS when the event is finished, then check Live Control Room to confirm the stream has ended. If the file is looping, it will otherwise continue playing until the stream is stopped or interrupted.
When the AWS route makes sense
MediaPackage belongs in a managed pipeline, not as a direct replacement for OBS’s media-source playback. AWS documents MediaPackage v2 live inputs as HLS and CMAF over HTTPS, with a video track required; supported codecs and output formats are listed in its input and output reference. In the documented live pattern, an upstream encoder sends the stream to MediaPackage, which provides packaged endpoint outputs.
AWS’s RTMPS example uses OBS, a load balancer, MediaLive, and MediaPackage: MediaLive does the upstream encoding, while MediaPackage handles packaging. AWS warns that example resources incur charges while running. It is architectural guidance, not a minimal recipe for turning a local MP4 into a YouTube broadcast: AWS RTMPS streaming example.

AWS has also described a MediaLive workflow wizard with input options including RTMP and MP4 and output options including MediaPackage origination and direct social platforms such as YouTube. That example is architectural context, not a guarantee of current account, region, or workflow availability, nor a complete current MP4-to-YouTube procedure. Verify the current AWS workflow and YouTube event configuration before building on it: AWS MediaLive workflow-wizard example.
Do not confuse live ingest with VOD delivery
AWS documents both live and VOD delivery, but they are distinct paths. The VOD workflow uses source content stored in S3; a live MediaPackage input instead receives an upstream stream. AWS’s MediaPackage documentation describes these separate use cases. An MP4 input option appearing in a MediaLive workflow is not evidence that MediaPackage alone takes an arbitrary local MP4 and pushes it directly to YouTube.
