One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube stream, set the output keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds (never exceed 4 seconds), then choose the playback latency mode in YouTube Live Control Room. Use normal latency if you need 4K; choose low or ultra-low only when faster viewer feedback matters more than buffering margin. A 24-hour run also needs its own failover, monitoring and recording plan: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive of one 24-hour event.
Separate encoder latency from viewer playback latency
Latency can mean the time added while MediaLive encodes and sends a feed, or the delay viewers experience during playback. MediaLive’s output timing and keyframe structure affect the contribution side; YouTube’s selected latency mode and each viewer’s conditions affect playback. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and the event appearing on the stream.
For a direct RTMP or RTMPS contribution, use YouTube’s encoder guidance as the compatibility target, then choose the playback mode in the YouTube event settings. Selecting a low-latency mode does not guarantee a fixed end-to-end delay.
Set the direct MediaLive output for YouTube
Choose a compatible protocol and format
- For a conservative compatibility choice, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance also lists HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the codec and bitrate row matching the output you actually configure.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. Ensure the configured bitrate is sustainable for the path from MediaLive to YouTube; a target that the contribution path cannot maintain can undermine a low-latency playback choice.
Set the keyframe interval
Configure the MediaLive output’s GOP/keyframe cadence for one keyframe every 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Translate that interval into the appropriate GOP size for the output frame rate rather than entering a frame count without considering the frame rate.

Use the matching H.264 bitrate guidance
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not AWS MediaLive service limits. The figures below apply to the listed resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s matching row for other formats or codecs.
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the program and available contribution capacity. Do not treat the recommended bitrate as a guarantee of a particular viewer latency or as evidence that a 24-hour run has been tested.

Choose YouTube’s playback latency mode
Set the mode in YouTube Live Control Room for the event. YouTube’s descriptions of typical viewer delay are not guarantees; actual delay varies with viewer and network conditions.
| Mode | Typical use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | 4K, maximum compatibility, or when fast interaction is not important | More viewer delay than the low-latency modes; YouTube says all resolutions and live features are supported. |
| Low latency | Faster updates when the audience does not need highly interactive conversation | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds. It can increase buffering, and low-latency modes do not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive or conversational streams where near-real-time feedback matters | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 5 seconds. Buffering risk is higher, and 4K is unavailable. |
Use normal latency when 4K is a requirement. For an interactive program, test low latency first if buffering tolerance is limited; ultra-low latency prioritizes faster feedback and can make the viewing experience less resilient to network or ingest disruption.

Do not apply the HLS segment setting to direct RTMP
AWS’s one-second segment recommendation applies to its low-latency HLS workflow using MediaPackage v2. It is not a universal MediaLive-to-YouTube RTMP setting. In that AWS workflow, segment length, GOP size, retries, cache duration and restart settings can affect latency; AWS recommends one-second segments, a retry interval equal to segment length and a lower file-cache duration.
YouTube says HLS delivery has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream because it sends segments, and the ultra-low-latency option is disabled for HLS. HLS may still be required for particular codecs or features, but use the requirements for the actual HLS workflow rather than copying the MediaPackage v2 settings into a direct RTMP output.

Plan resilience for a 24-hour run
Prepare for input or pipeline failure
- Consider two identical MediaLive pipelines as a resilience option. AWS also documents schedule actions for switching inputs. Choose and rehearse the failover or input-switch behavior that fits the source and program.
- Decide what should happen when the input is lost: whether to switch to a backup source, show a slate, or resume when the primary source returns. Validate the chosen behavior before an unattended run.
- Test the full path to YouTube, including a planned failure and recovery. YouTube recommends testing, previewing and monitoring stream health.
Monitor the run and keep an independent recording
- Watch stream health and alerts during the event, and assign someone to respond if the feed degrades or stops. A configured failover is not proof that every failure case will recover as intended.
- Arrange an independent local or cloud recording if the full program must be preserved. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for one 24-hour event.
- Verify current YouTube behavior and your recording’s available capacity before relying on an archive. The under-12-hour archive statement is not a stated maximum stream duration or a claim that YouTube necessarily ends a longer stream.
Troubleshoot latency and continuity problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers report more delay than expected | The event’s playback mode, contribution settings and viewer conditions all affect observed delay. | Confirm the selected YouTube mode and the 2-second keyframe interval; test end-to-end with the intended output and audience conditions. |
| Low-latency viewers see buffering | Low and ultra-low latency trade buffering margin for quicker playback; ultra-low has the greater buffering risk. | Check stream health and contribution stability. If buffering is more harmful than delay, test a less aggressive mode. |
| 4K is unavailable with the selected mode | YouTube’s low and ultra-low latency modes do not support 4K. | Use normal latency when 4K is required. |
| The direct RTMP output does not improve after setting one-second HLS segments | That segment recommendation is for AWS’s MediaPackage v2 low-latency HLS workflow, not a direct RTMP output. | For direct delivery, configure the YouTube-compatible keyframe cadence and playback mode; if using HLS, follow that workflow’s own requirements. |
| The event has no complete YouTube archive afterward | The documented automatic archive condition covers streams under 12 hours, not a 24-hour event. | Use the independent recording plan and confirm the current archive behavior before the event. |
| The feed drops during the run | Input, pipeline, contribution path or YouTube ingest may be involved; no single cause is established by the symptom alone. | Check stream health and MediaLive alarms, rehearse input switching or failover, and verify recovery before the next unattended run. |
When a cloud looping service is a better fit
MediaLive is the relevant path when you need to encode and contribute a live feed. If the goal is instead to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so a computer, OBS and home connection do not need to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud.
There is no computer that has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
