Short answer: Wowza Video is the more direct fit if you want a hosted 24×7 channel with a documented RTMP route to YouTube, provided your account is eligible and its limits work for you. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a managed encoder within a configurable AWS workflow; YouTube recognizes it as a verified encoder, but that does not make it a turnkey 24/7 YouTube service. If you want uploaded videos to loop on YouTube without maintaining an AWS or Wowza workflow, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud alternative.
First, identify which Wowza product you mean
“Wowza” can mean two different products here. Wowza Video is the hosted service with documented 24×7 channel functionality and a tutorial for sending a stream to YouTube over RTMP. Wowza Streaming Engine is separate software with private-cloud and on-premises deployment options. Their deployment models and pricing are not interchangeable, so a Wowza Video quote should not be compared as though it were a Wowza Streaming Engine plan.
AWS Elemental MediaLive is a managed live encoding service. An AWS channel takes content from attached inputs, transcodes it, and packages it into configured outputs. That makes MediaLive an encoder component in a workflow, rather than a one-button service that by itself guarantees a continuously running YouTube channel.
How the YouTube connection differs
Wowza Video: a documented RTMP target
Wowza’s YouTube tutorial describes creating the live stream in YouTube Studio, retrieving its stream URL and key, and configuring a custom target in Wowza to send the stream or a transcoder rendition to YouTube over RTMP. The tutorial requires a subscription that supports passthrough. Confirm that your particular account and plan are eligible before building around this route; the existence of the tutorial does not mean every subscription includes it.

YouTube lists AWS Elemental MediaLive among its verified encoders. That establishes recognition at the encoder level, not that every MediaLive setup automatically creates a YouTube event, manages the stream key, or runs unattended around the clock. You still need to configure the AWS channel and output, create or select the YouTube live event, and connect the output using the current AWS and YouTube instructions. The available material does not establish a universal click-by-click MediaLive-to-YouTube procedure, so treat those steps as configuration work rather than a fixed recipe.

For Wowza Video, choose a broadcast region near the source and verify that the 24×7 mode is enabled for the account. Its billing mode cannot be changed after channel creation, so verify the intended mode and feature limits before starting. Wowza’s setup documentation explicitly says 24×7 streams cannot be recorded.

MediaLive’s documented channel input limits are not a promise that every combination of inputs and features is supported. Check the relevant AWS constraints for the planned channel, especially if you need redundancy or several source feeds. The pricing model also warrants attention: AWS can charge for an output configured in a running channel even when that output is paused.
What a fair cost comparison includes
Do not compare a MediaLive line item with a Wowza Video subscription quote and call the result an apples-to-apples total. The complete cost depends on the architecture and workload, including:

- Input count and type, including any redundant feeds.
- Codec, resolution, frame rate, output count and bitrate.
- Whether the channel runs continuously and the applicable 24×7 subscription terms.
- Packaging, origination, storage or recording requirements.
- Where the stream is delivered: YouTube alone, or YouTube plus owned players and other endpoints.
- Region, monitoring and support requirements.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives one illustrative US East (N. Virginia) scenario: approximately $69.74 for a one-hour SD 540p event with about 1,000 viewers and 791 GB of CloudFront distribution. Its estimate includes about $2.50 for live encoding and packaging—$1.99 for MediaLive, $0.11 for MediaPackage ingest and $0.40 for packaging/origination—and $67.24 for CloudFront distribution. The guide says the example excludes test-player storage. These are figures for that specific worked scenario, not a quote for a YouTube-only stream or a 24/7 channel.
In that example, CloudFront distribution makes up most of the estimate. Do not multiply the one-hour total by 24 to forecast a day, or treat it as the cost of sending an encoder feed to YouTube. For a YouTube-only destination, YouTube receives the encoder feed and handles viewer delivery. If the same workflow also serves your own web player or other endpoints, packaging, origination and CDN charges may apply; model those separately using the actual delivery path and workload.

Wowza’s public pricing information distinguishes its products. The Wowza Video/Flowplayer enterprise offer describes 24×7 streaming at scale but directs buyers to contact Wowza rather than publishing a direct 24×7 quote. Wowza Streaming Engine’s Basic Monthly plan is listed at $195 per month for one instance, including up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels. That price is for Streaming Engine, not Wowza Video 24×7.
