Ending a YouTube broadcast does not stop an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel. In the AWS console, open the channel in the Region where it was created, choose Stop, and verify that its state reaches IDLE. A stopped channel may still incur idle charges, and related resources such as push inputs, MediaConnect flows, or a multiplex may continue billing independently.
Stop the MediaLive channel and verify its state
- In the AWS Management Console, select the correct AWS account and the Region where the channel was created.
- Open MediaLive → Channels, find the channel, and check its state. If it is RUNNING, select it and choose Stop.
- Check the channel again in the list or its details. Wait until the state is IDLE. STOPPING means the stop transition is still in progress; check again after it settles.
AWS documents the API operation as StopChannel. Stopping the MediaLive channel is separate from ending the YouTube broadcast: YouTube does not automatically send MediaLive a stop instruction. AWS’s 2023 guidance describes an automation workflow for stopping a channel after input loss, while the documented operational action is to stop the channel explicitly (AWS for Media & Entertainment Blog, May 12, 2023).
Why charges can continue after the channel is stopped
IDLE does not necessarily mean free. AWS distinguishes the running state from idle resources: a running channel can incur input and output processing charges even when it is not receiving content or producing output. Pausing pipelines does not make the channel idle; it remains running. Once stopped, a channel can still have an idle channel charge, and an attached push input can also incur an idle charge. An idle pull input does not incur an idle input charge.
MediaLive costs can include input processing, output processing, enabled add-ons, idle resources, and applicable data transfer. The amount depends on the service Region and the channel configuration; the public pricing page alone cannot determine the charge on a particular account. Check inputs and services attached to the channel
Push inputs
Inspect the channel’s inputs. If an attached input is a push input, AWS may charge for that input while it is idle even after the channel is stopped. If you no longer need an unused push input, consider deleting it; retain it if you intend to reuse it. Idle pull inputs do not have this idle-resource charge.
MediaConnect
If MediaConnect feeds the channel, check its associated flow and outputs. MediaConnect outputs do not automatically stop when the MediaLive channel stops; they can continue trying to send data and may generate additional flow charges. Stop unused outputs or flows separately, as appropriate. AWS explains this behavior in its guide to distributing content from MediaConnect to MediaLive.

Multiplex
If the channel is part of a multiplex, inspect the multiplex state as well. Stopping one channel does not stop the multiplex; it can continue accruing charges until the multiplex itself is stopped. Follow AWS’s instructions for stopping activity in a multiplex if the whole multiplex is no longer needed.
Other invoice items
Review the actual AWS billing and usage line items for the relevant date range and Region rather than assuming another service is responsible. Check for other services only if they appear in your account’s charges; the fact that a MediaLive channel exists does not establish that any other service is in use.

Find what your account is actually being billed for
- Open Billing and Cost Management and review service and usage line items for the dates in question.
- Match the charges to the correct Region and, where available, the channel configuration and resource type. Separate MediaLive input, output, add-on, idle-resource, and transfer charges rather than treating the invoice as one undifferentiated channel fee.
- Check the state of the channel and the attached resources against the dates covered by those line items. The current state alone does not identify which resource generated an earlier charge.
There is no universal post-stream bill amount: the rate depends on Region and configuration, and the actual cause and amount require your account’s billing data.
What changes for AWS accounts billed in India?
AWS says accounts with an India tax address are billed by AWS India, with invoices in INR. The account’s tax address determines the billing entity and applicable taxes; it does not change the steps for stopping MediaLive. The service Region and deployed configuration still affect the rate. Confirm the billing entity and tax address in your account, and use its invoice or cost data for an account-specific amount rather than converting an illustrative foreign price into an INR estimate. Deletion is not a substitute for checking related resources
A MediaLive channel must be idle before it can be deleted. Deleting the channel does not itself establish that connected resources such as a MediaConnect flow or multiplex have stopped, so check those resources separately before treating cleanup as complete. See AWS’s guide to editing and deleting a channel.
Troubleshooting: common causes and fixes
- The channel still shows RUNNING: YouTube ending the broadcast did not stop it. Use the channel’s Stop action, then monitor its state.
- The channel shows STOPPING: The state transition has not completed. Check the channel again until it reaches IDLE.
- The channel is IDLE but charges remain: Check for an idle channel charge and attached idle push inputs, then match the charge to its date and usage line item.
- Charges continue after MediaLive is idle: Check whether a MediaConnect output or flow, or a multiplex, is still active; stop unused resources separately.
- The invoice amount does not match an estimate: Verify the account’s Region, channel configuration, billing period, billing entity, and actual usage. Those details are needed to explain the amount.
