AWS egress is not one universal fee. The amount you pay to move data out depends on the service sending it, the destination, the AWS Region, the network path and your monthly volume. Internet downloads from EC2, S3 and many other services are normally billed as data transfer out (DTO); uploads into AWS are generally free. Inter-Region traffic bills the source-side outbound leg, while the destination-side inbound leg has no charge. CloudFront can remove the AWS-origin transfer charge, but it still bills delivery to viewers and requests.
What “AWS egress” means on an AWS bill
In cloud billing, egress usually means data leaving a provider. AWS generally labels this data transfer out (DTO). The most important question is not simply how many gigabytes you moved, but where each byte started and ended.
- Internet DTO: data leaving AWS for users, another provider or an on-premises network over the public internet.
- Inter-Region transfer: data moving between AWS Regions, such as Ohio to Frankfurt.
- Availability Zone transfer: traffic between zones in one Region, which can be billable even though it remains inside AWS.
- Service-specific transfer: S3, CloudFront, Direct Connect, S3 Transfer Acceleration and other services apply their own pricing rules.
- Intermediary processing: NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink and similar services can add processing or transfer metering to the path.
AWS states that there is no charge for data transfer from the internet into AWS. That does not make every internal or outbound path free: a request can enter through one service and then incur charges when the response leaves through another.

| Monthly internet data transfer out tier | Illustrative rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| First 10 TB per month | $0.09 per GB | EC2 example for US East (Ohio) |
| Next published tier | $0.085 per GB | Applied according to the current EC2 volume schedule |
| Next published tier | $0.07 per GB | Applied according to the current EC2 volume schedule |
| Higher-volume tier | $0.05 per GB | Applied according to the current EC2 volume schedule |
AWS also provides a 100 GB monthly data-transfer-out allowance to the internet. It is shared across eligible AWS services and Regions; it is not 100 GB for every Region or every service. For a simple illustration, 1,000 GB of eligible EC2 internet DTO at the $0.09 rate would leave roughly 900 GB after the allowance, or about $81 before any other charges, taxes or tier effects. Your bill can differ if traffic uses another service, crosses a tier boundary or is not eligible for that allowance.
Do not read the Ohio table as a promise that every EC2 Region uses the same numbers. AWS publishes service- and Region-specific rates, and those rates can change.
How direction and endpoint change the charge
Internet uploads into AWS
Data transfer from the public internet into AWS is generally free. This commonly covers a user uploading an object to S3 or sending an API request to a workload, although the receiving service can still have its own request, storage or processing charges.

When EC2, S3 or another AWS service sends bytes to a browser, another cloud or an external data center, the traffic is outbound from AWS and may be billed as DTO. The source service and Region determine which pricing page applies.

Traffic between Regions
Inter-Region transfer has two conceptual legs. AWS charges the source Region’s outbound leg under the applicable service rate. The destination side does not add an inbound data-transfer charge. In other words, moving a database backup from one Region to another can produce a charge where it leaves the first Region, but not a second inbound fee merely because it arrives in the destination Region.
Replication services may add their own request, storage or management costs. Treat the transfer price and the replicated data’s ongoing storage as separate lines in your estimate.
Same-Region traffic can still cost money
“Same Region” does not automatically mean “free.” A common example is traffic between EC2 instances in different Availability Zones. The EC2 pricing example lists $0.01 per GB in each direction for EC2-family cross-Availability-Zone transfer in the same Region. A two-way exchange can therefore create metered traffic in both directions.
Other network designs can add charges even when the source and destination are in one Region:

Map the actual path—source, Availability Zone, intermediary, destination and return path—rather than estimating from the application’s logical architecture alone.
S3 transfer rules: direct delivery versus AWS-internal paths
S3 uses service-specific exemptions that differ from a generic EC2 internet estimate. AWS lists internet transfer out from S3 as billable, while several common paths are free.
| S3 path | Data-transfer treatment | What to check separately |
|---|---|---|
| Internet to S3 | Free data transfer in | Request, storage and any ingest-related service charges |
| S3 to the public internet | Internet transfer out is billable | Region-specific S3 DTO rate and the shared allowance where eligible |
| S3 bucket to S3 bucket in the same Region | Free transfer case listed by AWS | Requests and any replication or batch-operation charges |
| S3 to an AWS service in the same Region | Free transfer case listed by AWS | The receiving service’s processing, request or compute charges |
| S3 to CloudFront | AWS-origin transfer to CloudFront is free | CloudFront viewer transfer and request charges |
| S3 Transfer Acceleration | Separate acceleration pricing applies | Acceleration data-transfer rates and S3 request charges |
S3 Transfer Acceleration is not a way to make all S3 delivery free. It uses edge locations and has its own rates, so compare its latency benefit with direct S3 delivery and CloudFront for the geography and object sizes you actually serve.

This is a billing-path substitution:
- Your origin—such as S3 or EC2—sends content to CloudFront. AWS-origin transfer to CloudFront is free.
- CloudFront checks its cache at an edge location. A cache hit can avoid another origin fetch.
- CloudFront sends the response from the edge to the viewer. CloudFront’s regional data-transfer-out and request pricing applies.
- For a cache miss, CloudFront fetches the object from the origin, so origin compute, storage, request and processing costs can still occur.
CloudFront has a separate 1 TB per month data-transfer-out allowance across CloudFront edge locations. That allowance is distinct from the 100 GB Region-to-internet allowance described for eligible AWS services. Requests, functions, invalidations and other CloudFront features can still be billed according to their own pricing.
When CloudFront is a strong fit
- Many viewers are geographically distant from the origin.
- Objects are cacheable and are requested repeatedly.
- You want edge delivery, TLS termination or origin shielding as part of the design.
- The workload’s request volume and cache-hit ratio make CloudFront’s request and transfer rates favorable.
When direct delivery may be simpler
- Content is private, rarely requested or effectively uncacheable.
- Viewers are concentrated near one Region and the origin path is already efficient.
- CloudFront features would add operational complexity without reducing origin work.
Compare source and viewer geography, bytes, cacheability, request rate, origin processing and both free-tier allowances. A lower origin-to-edge charge does not by itself prove a lower total bill.
Direct Connect, acceleration and private paths
Dedicated or optimized connectivity does not turn all egress into a single flat price. Direct Connect has connection and data-transfer rules that depend on the port, location and direction. S3 Transfer Acceleration has separate rates. PrivateLink, Transit Gateway and NAT Gateway can meter data processing. Because these services sit in the path, inspect their pricing pages and the exact route before comparing architectures.

Moving all data off AWS
AWS describes a switching-customer process that can provide free DTO when an eligible customer moves all data off AWS. The documented option can apply when moving all data off AWS or all data from a particular service across eligible accounts. It is not an automatic waiver and should not be assumed for a partial export, routine backup or ordinary cross-cloud replication.
Request the benefit through AWS Support under the documented process, confirm eligibility and obtain the approval before scheduling a large transfer. Continue to budget for the destination provider’s ingress or storage charges, network equipment, transfer tooling, compute used to read and package data, and any AWS services involved in the export.
How to estimate your own AWS egress bill
- Draw the path. Record the source service, source Region, Availability Zone, intermediary services, destination Region or provider and final viewer or data center.
- Classify each segment. Mark internet DTO, inter-Region transfer, cross-Availability-Zone transfer, CloudFront delivery, S3-specific transfer, Direct Connect or data processing.
- Measure bytes by segment. Separate uploads, downloads, replication, retries and return traffic. Do not use one total network number for every category.
- Apply the correct allowance. Check whether the traffic qualifies for the shared 100 GB internet allowance or the separate 1 TB CloudFront allowance. Neither is 100 GB or 1 TB per Region.
- Price the volume tier. Use the current service and Region table. The EC2 Ohio figures are illustrative only.
- Add non-egress charges. Include requests, storage, NAT or gateway processing, CloudFront requests, load-balancer processing, replication operations and destination-provider costs.
- Validate with AWS tools. Enter the scenario in AWS Pricing Calculator, then compare the estimate with the account’s Cost and Usage Report (CUR).
In the CUR, inspect usage types such as Region-DataTransfer-Out-Bytes, regional transfer usage and product codes that distinguish CloudFront from ordinary Region internet DTO. Filter by account, Region, service and date so a one-time migration is not confused with normal monthly delivery.
Common mistakes that inflate an estimate
- Multiplying one rate by all bytes: different services and paths can use different meters.
- Treating free transfer in as free transfer out: inbound internet traffic is generally free; downloads are the opposite direction.
- Assuming same Region means free: cross-zone and intermediary processing can still be charged.
- Calling CloudFront free: only the AWS-origin-to-CloudFront leg is free; viewer transfer and requests remain billable.
- Applying the allowance per Region or service: the 100 GB internet allowance is shared across eligible services and Regions.
- Budgeting a migration waiver automatically: the switching program requires eligibility and an AWS Support request.
- Ignoring return traffic: responses, acknowledgements, retries and bidirectional protocols can cross a billed path in both directions.
- Using old rates: published prices are service- and Region-specific and can change.
Choosing an architecture by workload
| Workload | First path to evaluate | Decisive checks |
|---|---|---|
| Public, cacheable web assets | CloudFront with S3 or another AWS origin | Viewer geography, cache-hit ratio, requests and CloudFront allowance |
| Large one-time export | Direct export plus AWS switching-program eligibility | Whether all data is leaving, approval timing, destination costs and transfer duration |
| Continuous cross-Region replication | Service-native replication or a planned transfer pipeline | Source outbound rate, storage, replication operations and sustained monthly volume |
| Private application traffic across zones | Topology review before changing services | Cross-zone bytes, NAT, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink and return traffic |
| Occasional downloads from one Region | Direct service delivery | Internet DTO tier, shared allowance and whether caching would actually help |
The cheapest design is workload-dependent. Compare total path cost, not a single headline egress rate: geography, volume thresholds, cacheability, request count, Availability Zone placement, intermediary processing and one-time versus recurring transfer all matter.
Bottom line
AWS egress is path-dependent. Uploading into AWS is generally free, but internet downloads and source-side inter-Region transfer can be charged. EC2’s illustrative Ohio schedule starts at $0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB per month, with a shared 100 GB monthly internet allowance. S3 has additional free same-Region and CloudFront cases, while CloudFront removes the origin-to-edge transfer charge but still bills viewers and requests. For a migration, check AWS’s switching-customer process before assuming you must pay normal DTO rates, and verify every estimate against the current pricing page and your CUR.
