Choose Avowed for first-person, real-time fantasy combat, fast weapon-and-spell experimentation, and a mostly solo adventure in Eora’s Living Lands. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for turn-based fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons tactics, a recruitable party, relationship-driven choices, and multiplayer. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on whether you want to control one hero in the moment or direct a party through a cinematic campaign.
Avowed and Baldur’s Gate 3 at a glance
These games are both large fantasy role-playing games, but they ask you to play in fundamentally different ways. Avowed puts your viewpoint in the action and lets you switch among weapons, spells, abilities and shields as situations change. Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you a party, a fifth-edition D&D rules foundation and time to plan each turn. The table below translates those design differences into practical buying decisions.
| What matters to you | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate, real-time control | Avowed | Its combat is presented from a first-person perspective, with direct weapon, spell and ability use. |
| Turn-based tactics and D&D-style character building | Baldur’s Gate 3 | It is a party-based RPG built on fifth-edition D&D, so positioning, action choices and party composition drive encounters. |
| Deep companion relationships | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Recruitable companions and relationship consequences are central to its player-driven campaign. |
| Exploration and conversation without constant party management | Avowed | Obsidian frames fighting, exploration and responses to the Living Lands as flexible ways to shape the journey. |
| Playing online with friends | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian documents four-player online multiplayer, split-screen options and later cross-play and cross-platform progression across supported systems. |
| Subscription-first access on Xbox or PC | Avowed | It launched with day-one Game Pass availability in addition to storefront purchases. |
Which game has better combat?
Avowed: direct, first-person action
Avowed is designed around the feeling of performing the attack yourself. You see the Living Lands through a first-person camera by default and can combine a range of weapons, abilities and powers in real time. A sword, spell, gun or shield can therefore be part of the same encounter plan rather than a choice made only between turns. If an enemy changes distance or a fight suddenly becomes crowded, you react immediately by changing equipment or ability use.

Baldur’s Gate 3: deliberate, party-level tactics
Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based combat within a fifth-edition D&D framework. Instead of aiming and striking continuously, you decide what each member of your party should do, in what order and from which position. The appeal is less about reflexes and more about evaluating options: which character should act, which ability is worth spending, and how the group’s choices interact.
That structure makes character and party management part of every serious encounter. A decision can be strong because it protects another party member, creates an opening for a later turn or fits the capabilities of the group you assembled. Players who enjoy pausing to read the situation and then committing to a plan will find more of the game’s identity here than in a first-person action system.
Choose by tempo, not by claims of objective superiority
- Pick Avowed if “better combat” means responsive movement, immediate attacks and changing tools while the fight is happening.
- Pick Baldur’s Gate 3 if it means layered decisions, party synergy and the satisfaction of solving an encounter over several turns.
- If you like both styles, use your tolerance for micromanagement as the tiebreaker: Avowed keeps the focus on your active character, while Baldur’s Gate 3 asks you to direct a team.
How role-playing and choices differ
Avowed’s journey through Eora
Obsidian describes Avowed as a game in which you shape the journey through combat, exploration and conversation choices. That wording matters because it presents role-playing as a blend of how you fight, where you go and how you respond to people in the Living Lands. You are not confined to a single prescribed method of interacting with the world; your preferred mixture of those activities forms the character you are playing.

The Living Lands setting is part of Eora, the world established by Obsidian’s earlier role-playing games. You do not need to treat Avowed as a party-management exercise to engage with its setting. Its first-person presentation and optional third-person view keep the emphasis on inhabiting the environment and deciding what to do next.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s player-driven D&D campaign
Larian calls Baldur’s Gate 3 an expansive, cinematic, player-driven RPG based on fifth-edition D&D. Its official description emphasizes choices that shape fellowship and betrayal, survival and sacrifice, and the lure of absolute power. In practical terms, role-playing is expressed through the party you recruit, the relationships you build and the consequences that follow from decisions made during the campaign.

The D&D foundation also makes character concepts and party composition a central part of the experience. You are not only selecting dialogue or a route through a location; you are guiding a group whose capabilities and loyalties affect how problems can be approached. If you want a campaign where social decisions and tactical decisions constantly inform one another, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the stronger match.
Which choice system suits you?
- Avowed fits players who want role-playing to emerge from a personal adventure: choose a route, decide how to fight and answer conversations in the moment.
- Baldur’s Gate 3 fits players who want choices to reverberate through a large cast, a party structure and a cinematic D&D story.
Companions, relationships and social play
Why Baldur’s Gate 3 is the companion-focused choice
Baldur’s Gate 3 is explicitly party-based. Larian documents recruitable companions, relationship consequences and a campaign built around fellowship, betrayal, survival and power. Companions are therefore more than occasional helpers: they are part of how the story is experienced and how the group functions in play.

This structure is ideal if you like learning a cast over a long campaign, weighing personal loyalties and seeing your decisions affect relationships. It also creates a management responsibility. You are coordinating several characters, considering who belongs in the active group and accounting for how their abilities and reactions fit your plans.
Avowed’s less party-centric emphasis
Avowed’s official positioning centers on your combat experimentation, exploration and responses in the Living Lands rather than on a four-person D&D-style party. That makes it the more natural choice when you want the world and your own moment-to-moment decisions to stay in the foreground. It does not ask you to approach the game primarily as a social-management simulation.
If your favorite role-playing scenes involve extensive companion conversations and relationship branching, start with Baldur’s Gate 3. If you prefer to maintain a clear personal viewpoint and let exploration and combat define the rhythm, Avowed will feel more direct.

Is Avowed like Skyrim or Baldur’s Gate 3?
Avowed shares a broad fantasy role-playing category with both games, but its documented design points in a specific direction. Like a first-person action RPG, it lets you experience the world from the character’s viewpoint and handle fights in real time. That makes the comparison to Skyrim more useful for camera and combat feel than for story structure. Avowed is not presented as a fifth-edition D&D party campaign.

Baldur’s Gate 3, by contrast, is explicitly a cinematic, party-based RPG in the Forgotten Realms. Its identity comes from turn-based D&D tactics, recruitable companions and decisions that shape the campaign’s social and narrative outcomes. If you are asking whether Avowed is “another Baldur’s Gate 3,” the answer is no: the games overlap in fantasy role-playing, not in their core control model.
Which RPG is better for solo play?
Avowed for a focused solo adventure
Avowed is built as a solo-focused adventure. Its first-person action and flexible mix of weapons, spells and abilities let you concentrate on one hero’s decisions without making party coordination the defining task. Exploration, conversation and combat are all framed as ways you can shape your own journey.
Baldur’s Gate 3 for a solo campaign with a full party
Baldur’s Gate 3 can also be played as a single-player campaign, but its design remains party-based. Solo here means that one person directs the group, not that the game removes companion management. Choose it if you want to experience a rich D&D campaign on your own while still making decisions for a team and following companion relationships.
The distinction is simple: Avowed is the better solo fit when you want uninterrupted control of one active character; Baldur’s Gate 3 is better when solo play means directing an ensemble and watching the group’s relationships evolve.

Can you play either game with friends?
Baldur’s Gate 3 multiplayer
Larian’s multiplayer documentation lists four-player online multiplayer and split-screen options. Its final major-patch announcement also documents cross-play and cross-platform progression for PC, Mac, Xbox and PlayStation 5. Because platform and multiplayer features can change with updates, check the current support information for the exact combination of systems you and your friends use before buying.
Multiplayer changes the nature of the campaign: each participant can contribute decisions while the party tackles the same story. That makes Baldur’s Gate 3 the clear choice when shared role-playing is a requirement rather than a bonus.
Avowed’s documented focus
The official Avowed materials used for this comparison present it as a solo-focused adventure. They do not document a comparable cooperative campaign. If playing with friends is the deciding factor, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the safer selection based on the published multiplayer features.
World, camera and atmosphere
Avowed: the Living Lands in first or third person
Avowed takes place in Eora’s Living Lands. Its first-person perspective makes the environment feel like a place you are moving through directly, while the optional third-person mode lets you see your character and equipment from outside. This flexibility is useful if you prefer an immersive viewpoint for exploration but want a wider view of your character during traversal or combat.
The setting is also tied to your practical choices: Obsidian highlights combat, exploration and conversation as routes through the journey. The result is a world best suited to players who want to set their own pace between fights, discovery and dialogue.

Baldur’s Gate 3: a cinematic Forgotten Realms campaign
Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in the Forgotten Realms and is presented as a cinematic D&D adventure. Its atmosphere is built around the campaign’s cast, the party’s changing situation and the consequences of choices. The camera and turn structure support observing a scene, considering your options and directing the group rather than inhabiting a single first-person viewpoint.
Choose Avowed when camera perspective and physical presence in the environment are priorities. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when you want the feeling of directing a cinematic tabletop-style campaign.
Platforms, access and value
| Game | Documented platforms and access | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Avowed | Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC storefronts, Battle.net, Steam and cloud; day-one Game Pass availability at launch | Xbox Wire documented the February 18, 2025 launch. Obsidian later announced a PlayStation 5 version; verify its current release status and edition details before purchase. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | PC, PlayStation 5, macOS and Xbox Series X|S; purchase routes include Steam, GOG, PlayStation and Xbox | Platform features, cross-play and progression are update-dependent, so confirm current support for your region and system combination. |
For an Xbox or PC player who already subscribes to Game Pass, Avowed’s day-one inclusion can reduce the upfront cost of trying it. That is a subscription-access consideration, not a claim that the game is free without the subscription. Baldur’s Gate 3 is sold through its listed storefronts, with physical editions also documented by Larian.

Should you play Avowed or Baldur’s Gate 3 first?
Start with Avowed when:
- You want to swing a weapon, cast a spell or change equipment without waiting for a turn.
- You prefer first-person exploration, with third-person available as an alternative view.
- You want a solo-focused adventure in the Living Lands rather than a party-management campaign.
- You like experimenting with several combat tools and letting exploration and conversation shape the route.
- You are on Xbox or PC and want to use its documented day-one Game Pass availability.
Start with Baldur’s Gate 3 when:
- You enjoy fifth-edition D&D systems and turn-based tactical planning.
- You want recruitable companions whose relationships and reactions matter throughout the story.
- You prefer a cinematic Forgotten Realms campaign with branching consequences.
- You want four-player online multiplayer, split-screen options or documented cross-play and cross-platform progression on supported systems.
- You enjoy directing a party and solving encounters through coordinated character decisions.
If you are still undecided
- Decide whether your ideal fight is an action sequence or a tactical puzzle. This usually settles the choice faster than setting or graphics preferences.
- Decide whether companions are the heart of the experience. If yes, favor Baldur’s Gate 3; if not, Avowed keeps the focus tighter on your own adventure.
- Decide whether friends need to join the campaign. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when multiplayer is essential.
- Check your hardware, platform and current store terms. Avowed’s documented launch support differs from Baldur’s Gate 3’s broader platform list, and live availability can change.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The official materials establish each game’s format, setting, choice model, platform support and multiplayer features. They do not provide a directly comparable review score, sales figure or completion-time statistic. No hands-on test was used to rank graphics, performance or encounter quality. The recommendation here is therefore a playstyle match based on documented design, not an invented numerical winner.
Platform support and online features are especially time-sensitive. Avowed’s PlayStation 5 announcement and Baldur’s Gate 3’s later cross-play documentation show that availability can expand after launch. Recheck the current platform pages, patch notes and store listings if your decision depends on a specific console, operating system, edition or multiplayer combination.
Final verdict
Avowed is better for the player who wants a personal, first-person fantasy adventure with immediate combat and room to mix weapons, spells and abilities. Baldur’s Gate 3 is better for the player who wants a D&D campaign in which a party, companions, relationships and turn-by-turn tactics drive the experience. Treat “better” as a description of your preferred way to play: choose the action-focused Living Lands journey for Avowed, or the cinematic, multiplayer-ready Forgotten Realms campaign for Baldur’s Gate 3.
