Serve AVIF first, WebP second, and keep a JPEG or PNG fallback. The HTML <picture> element lets each browser select the best format it can decode. AVIF generally produces smaller files and adds HDR and wide-color-gamut support, while WebP has the safer compatibility profile across current browsers and image tools. Testing both at the same dimensions and visual quality, then checking your own visitor analytics, gives you a reliable production choice.

The practical answer

For most websites serving a mixed audience, publish all three layers in this order:

  1. AVIF for browsers that support it.
  2. WebP for browsers that do not accept AVIF.
  3. JPEG or PNG for clients that cannot decode either modern format or for workflows that still require those formats.

This arrangement avoids making a site-wide bet on one codec. A capable browser receives the more efficient AVIF asset; another browser can receive WebP; an older or unusual client still gets a conventional image. The browser makes the choice from the ordered sources in your markup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you control the audience and your analytics show dependable AVIF support, AVIF can be your primary encoded asset. If compatibility simplicity is more important than the smallest possible transfer, WebP is a sensible baseline. In either case, retain a fallback until you have verified every client and publishing workflow that matters.

What AVIF and WebP are

AVIF

AVIF is the AV1 Image File Format in a HEIF container. MDN describes it as open source and royalty free. It supports lossy and lossless compression, animation, alpha transparency, HDR, and wide color gamut. Those capabilities make it useful for ordinary photographic images as well as graphics that need transparency or a wider color range.

Its principal web advantage is compression efficiency: MDN generally describes AVIF as compressing better than WebP. A smaller file can reduce transfer time and bandwidth, but the result depends on the source image, encoder settings, dimensions, and the visual quality you accept. AVIF has an important display limitation: it cannot progressively render. The browser must download the complete file before it can display the image, so decode and display behavior should be checked on representative devices and connections.

WebP

WebP is Google’s modern web-image format. Google documents both lossy and lossless compression, animation, and alpha transparency, and describes WebP as producing smaller files than older web formats. WebP is natively supported in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, as well as by many image tools and libraries.

WebP is therefore a dependable compatibility layer. It covers modern browsers while preserving transparency and animation, without requiring every visitor to handle AVIF. Can I Use maintains a current browser-support table for WebP; check it when your support policy includes specific browser versions or embedded browsers.

AVIF vs. WebP at a glance

Criterion AVIF WebP
Compression Generally better compression than WebP at comparable visual quality, according to MDN; measure your own images. Modern lossy and lossless compression that is generally smaller than legacy formats; AVIF often goes smaller at an equivalent target quality.
Browser coverage MDN lists Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93, and Safari 16.1 for support. These version figures are compatibility references, not a guarantee for every webview or embedded client. Google documents native support in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, plus many tools and libraries. Exact support still depends on the browser version and client environment.
Lossy and lossless modes Both supported. Both supported.
Animation Supported. Supported.
Alpha transparency Supported. Supported.
HDR and wide color gamut Supported. Not stated in the cited Google material; do not assume equivalent HDR or wide-gamut behavior without testing your pipeline.
Progressive display Not supported: the complete file must be downloaded before display. Progressive behavior is not stated in the cited material; test the display behavior relevant to your implementation.
Fallback strategy Place before WebP, then provide JPEG or PNG in the <img> fallback. Place after AVIF and before the conventional fallback.

The table compares format capabilities, not a promise that every encoder or browser exposes every feature identically. Encoding settings, color profiles, animation timelines, and the browser’s decoder can change the result.

How to compare them fairly

A file-size comparison is meaningful only when the candidate files represent the same image at the same display size and an equivalent perceptual quality. Comparing an aggressively compressed AVIF with a high-quality WebP, or comparing different pixel dimensions, answers the wrong question.

  1. Start with the same source. Use the same original image, crop, orientation, and color treatment for both encodes.
  2. Create matching dimensions. Generate the AVIF and WebP at the pixel dimensions the page actually needs. Do not let one format use a smaller or larger source.
  3. Choose a quality target. Adjust each encoder until details, edges, gradients, and text look acceptably similar. A numeric quality value is not portable between codecs, so compare the rendered output rather than matching numbers.
  4. Record transfer bytes. Measure the encoded file sizes and the sizes of responsive variants, not only the largest original.
  5. Inspect difficult content. Check faces, foliage, fine text, sharp UI edges, shadows, gradients, and transparent boundaries. Compression artifacts often appear in these areas first.
  6. Test decoding and display. Include the oldest supported browser, representative mobile hardware, and the network conditions your audience actually experiences. AVIF’s complete-file requirement makes this step especially important.
  7. Review analytics after deployment. Confirm which source browsers receive, whether fallbacks are being used unexpectedly, and whether any client reports decode failures.

Use the result to set policy by image category. A photographic hero may justify AVIF’s extra savings, while a small interface icon may show no meaningful benefit after encoding overhead. Keep the same visual-quality threshold for every format so your choice is based on the trade-off your visitors experience.

Browser support and what the version numbers mean

MDN’s AVIF guide lists support beginning with Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93, and Safari 16.1. Those numbers identify browser releases with documented AVIF support; they do not describe the percentage of your visitors using those releases, nor do they cover every in-app browser, operating-system image viewer, crawler, or email client.

WebP’s support profile is broader and longer established. Google lists native support in the major Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera families, along with many tools and libraries. That makes WebP the safer single modern format when you cannot maintain multiple encodes. It is still worth checking the current Can I Use WebP table if your requirements include a particular browser release, kiosk, smart-TV browser, or embedded webview.

Your analytics should decide how aggressively you rely on AVIF. Look at actual user agents and device classes, not only the browsers used by your development team. A small but business-critical group of clients may justify keeping WebP and JPEG or PNG even when the overall AVIF percentage is high.

Implementing AVIF, WebP, and a fallback with picture

The basic pattern is an ordered set of source elements followed by an ordinary img. The browser evaluates the sources in order and uses the first format it supports. The final img remains the fallback and supplies the alternative text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<picture>
  <source srcset="hero.avif" type="image/avif">
  <source srcset="hero.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="hero.jpg"
       alt="Descriptive alternative text"
       width="1600"
       height="900">
</picture>

Keep the AVIF source first. If a browser understands AVIF, it will not need to request the WebP or JPEG source. If it does not, the browser proceeds to WebP and then to the fallback. The type attributes make the format intent explicit.

Use responsive dimensions, not one oversized file

Generate several widths for each format when the image appears at different sizes. The following example gives the browser width candidates while preserving the same format order:

<picture>
  <source
    type="image/avif"
    srcset="hero-800.avif 800w, hero-1600.avif 1600w"
    sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1600px">
  <source
    type="image/webp"
    srcset="hero-800.webp 800w, hero-1600.webp 1600w"
    sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1600px">
  <img
    src="hero-1600.jpg"
    srcset="hero-800.jpg 800w, hero-1600.jpg 1600w"
    sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1600px"
    width="1600"
    height="900"
    alt="Descriptive alternative text">
</picture>

The width and height on the fallback image describe the intrinsic ratio and reserve layout space before the image arrives. Use dimensions that match the actual variants; incorrect values can distort the image or reserve the wrong amount of space. Write useful alt text once on the img, because that element is the semantic fallback regardless of which source is downloaded.

When to use a single source instead

If your controlled audience has a verified, uniform browser baseline, a single AVIF or WebP URL can simplify templates. That is an operational decision, not a format capability. The moment you serve a mixed audience, the picture pattern is the safer default because it keeps unsupported clients from receiving an undecodable asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a format for specific image requirements

Choose AVIF first for maximum reduction or advanced color

Prioritize AVIF when bandwidth reduction is a major goal, when your images benefit from HDR or wide color gamut, or when you need AVIF’s feature set for animation and transparency. Confirm that the browsers and devices important to your site decode it reliably, and keep the WebP and conventional fallbacks in place while you validate the rollout.

Choose WebP first for a broad, simple baseline

WebP is the practical choice when you want modern compression, animation, and alpha transparency with broad native browser support. It is also useful when your existing image-processing tools, CMS, or asset pipeline already handles WebP but does not yet generate AVIF.

Offer both for a mixed audience

Serving both formats costs storage and encoding time, but it avoids forcing a single compromise on every visitor. AVIF-capable browsers can take the smaller or more feature-rich file; other current browsers can use WebP; clients outside both support sets receive JPEG or PNG.

Keep JPEG or PNG where a workflow requires it

A fallback is not only for old browsers. Some third-party systems, image editors, document generators, or established publishing workflows may require JPEG or PNG. Keep those originals or generated variants where they are part of a contractual, operational, or compatibility requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transparency, animation, HDR, and color decisions

Both AVIF and WebP support alpha transparency, so either can replace a transparent PNG when the encoded result meets your quality needs. Inspect semi-transparent edges against light and dark backgrounds; a format choice does not remove the need to check compositing artifacts.

Both formats also support animation. For animated assets, compare the complete sequence, frame timing, dimensions, and visual quality rather than comparing a single still frame. Verify playback and memory behavior on the devices you support, because the format’s ability to contain animation does not guarantee identical runtime behavior everywhere.

AVIF additionally supports HDR and wide color gamut. Use those capabilities only when the source, color-management pipeline, display targets, and browser behavior are all prepared for them. If your page is standard sRGB content, AVIF’s color features may not provide a visible benefit; its compression advantage can still be the reason to use it.

Deployment workflow for a production site

  1. Inventory your image classes. Separate photographs, illustrations, logos, icons, transparent graphics, and animations. Record where each class appears and its typical display dimensions.
  2. Define support requirements. List the browsers, operating systems, embedded clients, crawlers, and partner systems that must receive an image. Include any accessibility or archival requirement for a conventional format.
  3. Generate matched variants. Produce AVIF and WebP files from the same source at the same dimensions and quality target. Generate the JPEG or PNG fallback at the dimensions your fallback clients need.
  4. Build the markup. Put AVIF first, WebP second, and the fallback in the img. Add accurate alt, width, and height attributes, then add srcset and sizes when display widths vary.
  5. Verify source selection. In each supported browser, inspect the requested URL and confirm that the intended format, width, and pixel density were selected.
  6. Test visual output. Check representative images for detail loss, halos, banding, transparency edges, animation timing, and color differences.
  7. Test failure paths. Temporarily block AVIF requests, then WebP requests, and confirm that the next source loads. Test a client that cannot decode either modern format to verify the JPEG or PNG fallback.
  8. Monitor after release. Watch error logs, real-user performance data, and browser distributions. If a client group fails to decode AVIF, keep it on WebP or the conventional fallback while you investigate.

Common mistakes and fixes

Putting WebP before AVIF

Symptom: AVIF-capable browsers download WebP. Fix: reorder the sources so the AVIF source appears first, followed by WebP and then the fallback image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Omitting the fallback image

Symptom: an unsupported client shows a broken image. Fix: keep a real JPEG or PNG URL in the img src; do not rely on the browser understanding either modern source.

Comparing unlike encodes

Symptom: one format appears to win only because it uses fewer pixels or a lower quality target. Fix: regenerate both from the same source, match dimensions, and judge visual quality before comparing bytes.

Using incorrect dimensions

Symptom: layout shifts, a distorted image, or a browser choosing an unsuitable candidate. Fix: make the declared width and height match the intrinsic aspect ratio and make sizes reflect the CSS layout.

Assuming AVIF will appear progressively

Symptom: an AVIF hero remains blank until the entire file arrives. Fix: account for AVIF’s full-download requirement, optimize its dimensions and bytes, and test the experience on slow connections. Use the WebP or conventional fallback where a different display behavior is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trusting a desktop test alone

Symptom: the page works on a developer laptop but fails for a mobile or embedded client. Fix: test the actual browser versions and device classes in your support policy, then confirm with production analytics.

Assuming every pipeline understands both codecs

Symptom: a CMS, editor, thumbnailer, or external integration drops an image or strips its transparency. Fix: verify tool and library support, retain the source and conventional fallback, and make generation failures visible rather than silently publishing a missing asset.

A decision framework you can apply today

  • Need the smallest practical transfer and have verified client support? Generate AVIF and put it first.
  • Need a broadly compatible modern format with one simpler delivery path? Use WebP as the baseline.
  • Serve a mixed or unknown audience? Publish AVIF, WebP, and JPEG or PNG through picture.
  • Need HDR or wide-gamut imagery? Favor AVIF, but validate the entire color pipeline and supported displays.
  • Need transparent or animated assets? Both formats support those features; choose using measured bytes, visual quality, and client behavior.
  • Have an established integration that requires JPEG or PNG? Keep that format as an explicit fallback or source of record.

The decision is not AVIF versus WebP in isolation. It is a delivery policy: which encoded variants you generate, the order in which browsers may select them, the quality and dimensions you publish, and the fallback behavior you are prepared to support.
