In a 2022 demonstration, the 95-m container ship SUZAKU completed a 790-km round trip from Tokyo Bay through Ise Bay and back using an integrated autonomous-navigation system. It was not an unattended voyage: a shore-based Fleet Operation Center monitored the ship and could take over remote ship-handling in an emergency.
What was the SUZAKU voyage?
The Nippon Foundation’s fifth MEGURI2040 demonstration ran from February 26 to March 1, 2022. SUZAKU sailed from Tokyo Bay through Ise Bay and returned, covering 790 km in total. The vessel measured 95 m and had a gross tonnage of 749, according to the Foundation’s account.
The Foundation described it as the first demonstration of a comprehensive fully autonomous navigation system for a container ship operating in a congested sea area. That describes the system being demonstrated, not a ship sailing without human oversight or a commercial service already in operation.
How did the ship navigate?
The DFFAS (Designing the Future of Full Autonomous Ship) system linked equipment aboard SUZAKU with shore-based monitoring and ship-to-shore communications. The IMO Maritime Safety Committee’s 2022 information paper describes three main parts:

- Ship-side navigation: systems aboard the vessel controlled its autonomous-navigation functions.
- Land-side monitoring and support: the Fleet Operation Center in Chiba monitored the vessel and could support it through remote ship-handling.
- Ship-to-shore communications: a communications system connected the vessel and the shore operation.
The center monitored weather, sea conditions, traffic and ship equipment. It could switch to remote operation in an emergency. The voyage therefore tested autonomous functions within a supervised system that retained a human intervention option; it did not establish that SUZAKU completed the route with no people able to intervene.
Why test in Tokyo Bay?
The route mattered because of its traffic as well as its length. The IMO paper says roughly 500 ships pass through Tokyo Bay each day. For context, it gives roughly 40 ships a day for the Panama Canal and roughly 320 for the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. These are the paper’s approximate traffic figures, not proof that the waterways have identical counting methods or operating conditions.

In a crowded coastal area, an autonomous-navigation system must contend with surrounding traffic while planning and following a route, and it must maintain a working link to shore for monitoring and possible intervention. The demonstration placed those functions in a demanding real-world setting. The published facts establish the route, traffic context and system arrangement; they do not provide a collision-avoidance success rate or detailed performance results for each function.
Who built and supported the system?
DFFAS brought together 30 companies from different fields. The Nippon Foundation supported MEGURI2040, and the Fleet Operation Center in Chiba supplied shore-based oversight. Furuno says it contributed marine-radar and wireless-communications expertise to MEGURI2040 and lists the DFFAS 790-km test as completed in March 2022.

Riviera Maritime Media reported that NYK’s SUZAKU trial used Orca AI technology and achieved about 98% complete autonomy over approximately 40 hours. That figure is trade-publication reporting, not a primary event record in the available accounts; it should not be treated as a definitive measure of how much of the 790-km route was autonomous or as evidence that the vessel was unattended.

It demonstrated that an integrated autonomous-navigation system, paired with shore monitoring and the capability for remote operation, could be used on a container ship in a crowded sea area on a Tokyo Bay–Ise Bay round trip. The test addressed a potential response to aging crews and crew shortages, accident reduction, and Japan’s ambition to develop an autonomous-shipping industry.

A demonstration is not the same as certification, routine commercial deployment or proof that cargo ships generally can operate without crews. The reported voyage alone does not establish current certification status, commercial availability, or that the same performance would apply to other vessels and routes. Those are separate questions from what SUZAKU demonstrated in 2022.
