First enable live streaming and create a broadcast in YouTube Studio; then connect the encoder using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. A continuous stream still needs monitoring and recovery planning, and YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not an indefinite broadcast.
Before you set up a 24/7 stream
Confirm the channel can go live before choosing an encoder. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature in advance rather than immediately before a scheduled launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Decide what will play continuously: a single recording, a rotation of recordings, or a playlist. Use only material you own or are authorized to broadcast. Permission to use a track or video does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID for licensed material to avoid being interrupted.
Choose how to keep the feed running
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming through software, dedicated hardware, and listed cloud tools. The right choice depends on whether a computer or server must stay on, how much setup and monitoring you want to manage, and the service’s current cost and recovery behavior. YouTube’s verified-encoder listing identifies product categories, not guaranteed uptime or an endorsement.

- Software encoder on a local computer. YouTube supports software encoders generally. You control the machine and its looping setup, and the computer and network must remain available for the feed to continue. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify a particular looping configuration for a particular program.
- Dedicated hardware encoder. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders. This is optional, not a platform requirement; no specific model or minimum specification is established here.
- Other cloud services. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Check a provider’s current pricing, supported formats, restart behavior, recording options, and rights workflow before choosing it. The listing does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Restream documents how to add a YouTube channel for multi-platform delivery, but its cited support page does not establish unattended looping of prerecorded video. Do not treat it as an automatic 24/7 looping solution on that evidence alone. See Restream’s YouTube streaming instructions.
Connect an encoder in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming. Complete channel verification and activation, allowing up to 24 hours for first-time access if needed.
- Create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create the stream. YouTube’s exact interface can change; follow the current encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in the encoder or cloud service. Treat the stream key as a secret credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots.
- Configure the source and start sending. Select the recording or playlist in the encoder, then start the encoder so it sends the feed to YouTube. Confirm the incoming preview and broadcast status in Studio before relying on the stream being live to viewers.
- Check the result and recovery path. Verify that the intended video is playing and that the stream remains active. Decide how you will detect a stopped feed and restore it; YouTube’s connection instructions do not promise that an encoder, network, cloud provider, or YouTube connection will never fail.
Plan the archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise of a complete replay for a longer continuous broadcast. If viewers need a replay, record a separate copy or divide programming into shorter broadcasts, then check the current archive behavior in Studio. YouTube’s guidance is at its encoder setup page.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Review every video, song, and other included material for broadcast rights before going live. If content is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
- You cannot start a broadcast: Check channel verification, the live-streaming restriction history, and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive video: Recheck that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key from the broadcast you created in Studio. Keep the key private; if you believe it has been exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check whether the local machine, network, encoder process, or cloud service stopped sending. Restore the feed from the encoder or service and set up a way to detect interruptions; the YouTube setup instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
- The stream is replaced or interrupted: Check YouTube’s live copyright notices and review the material being broadcast. Resolve the rights issue with the rights holder, including Content ID allowlisting when applicable.
- There is no complete replay: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube’s stated automatic archive threshold is for streams under 12 hours; use separate recording or shorter sessions when a replay is essential.
Cost and operating trade-offs
A local software encoder may avoid a cloud-streaming subscription, but it depends on a computer and internet connection staying available and requires you to handle monitoring and recovery. Dedicated hardware is optional and adds equipment considerations. Cloud services shift the always-on workload away from your home computer, but their prices, storage limits, supported formats, and recovery terms differ and should be checked with each provider before purchase.
