You can automate a 3270 mainframe green-screen workflow with Cucumber by connecting its Gherkin steps to Java code that drives a Jagacy3270 session. Cucumber describes and reports the business scenario; Jagacy handles terminal interaction; screen objects and an assertion library keep the implementation maintainable.
What Cucumber and Jagacy each do
Cucumber runs executable specifications written in Gherkin. A scenario uses Given, When, and Then steps to describe a behavior; Java step definitions bind those steps to the code that performs the test. Cucumber reports whether each scenario passed or failed.
Jagacy3270 is the Java library in this pairing that interacts with a 3270 host session. The workflow uses its Session3270 interface to open a session, navigate screens, submit input, and read results. The 2016 DZone tutorial describes Jagacy3270 as supporting SSL, TN3270E, internationalization, and more than thirty languages; those are product capability claims, not performance or test-coverage measurements.
Cucumber is not itself a terminal driver. Nor is Selenium the right tool for a green-screen interface: Selenium automates browsers, whereas this approach communicates with the host through a 3270 session.

How a Cucumber-Jagacy test is organized
Keep the scenario about business behavior
Write the feature in language that describes what a user needs to accomplish, not which keys or terminal coordinates the test presses. For example:
Feature: Find a faculty member in the university phonebook
Scenario: Search by faculty name
Given the phonebook is available
When I search for a faculty member by name
Then the matching phonebook records are displayedThis is an illustrative feature, not a complete runnable test: the actual step definitions and test data must match the application and environment.

Put terminal mechanics behind screen objects
Step definitions should translate business steps into calls on reusable screen or page objects. Those objects encapsulate navigation, field entry, submission, and screen reading. This separation prevents feature files from becoming a script of terminal commands and keeps host-specific interaction out of business-facing scenarios.
Cucumber’s architecture guidance favors loosely coupled, well-encapsulated components. Keep step definitions thin, reuse screen behavior where appropriate, and avoid burying application logic inside test steps. Full-stack tests that reach a UI, services, or databases tend to be slower and more brittle than tests at lower levels, so reserve this approach for behaviors that genuinely need host-level acceptance coverage.

End-to-end workflow
- Define the scenario. Describe the business outcome in Gherkin and identify the deterministic test data it needs.
- Establish the session. In a setup hook, create and open the Jagacy session using environment-specific connection settings rather than values embedded in feature files.
- Start from known state. Navigate to the expected application and screen before acting. The setup should make the host and application state predictable for each scenario.
- Perform the task through screen objects. Have the step definition call reusable screen-level operations to enter inputs and submit them through
Session3270. - Read and assert the result. Extract the relevant screen data, normalize it if needed, and compare it with expected records using a chosen Java assertion library.
- Capture failure evidence. Attach a screenshot or other diagnostic to the Cucumber report when useful, especially when a scenario fails.
- Release resources. Close the session in teardown so the next scenario does not inherit an open or contaminated terminal session.
The published example follows this pattern for a university phonebook: it opens the application, searches by faculty name, compares returned records with expected records, embeds screenshots, and closes the session.
Choose assertions that verify the data
Cucumber does not include an assertion library. Its Java guidance lists JUnit 5, AssertJ, Hamcrest, JUnit 4, and TestNG as options. Choose one that fits the project, and keep the Cucumber Java and runner dependency versions aligned.

For an acceptance test, assert the returned records or other normalized screen data against expected values. A screenshot helps a person diagnose a failed interaction, but it is not a machine-readable assertion and cannot establish that the expected business result appeared.

Cucumber can be used in a CI pipeline: its executable returns a nonzero exit status if one or more scenarios fail, and the official CI guidance describes publishing JUnit formatter output in Jenkins and other CI systems. Configure the pipeline to preserve both the process result and the report so failures are visible to the build and useful to investigate.

Keep environment-specific settings outside the feature files. In particular, configure host credentials, terminal connection settings, test-data reset, and whether the job targets an emulator or a live host. Add parallel execution only after sessions and test data are isolated; otherwise, concurrent scenarios can interfere with each other’s application state.
When this approach fits—and what it does not establish
Use Cucumber with Jagacy when the acceptance behavior depends on the 3270 interface and you want readable scenarios plus Java-based host interaction. For browser behavior, use browser automation; for service behavior, use API-level tests where they provide the needed coverage. Cucumber can sit over different automation tools through step definitions, but it does not perform those interactions by itself.
There is no published numeric performance or coverage result for the specific Cucumber-Jagacy implementation described here. Treat it as an integration pattern, not evidence that a particular suite will meet a speed target or cover a stated share of an application.
