Portrait and Landscape lock the screen in the selected orientation. To lock the tablet’s current position, enable Auto rotate, hold the tablet the way you want it, then tap the rotation control again.
What Auto rotate, Portrait, and Landscape mean
- Auto rotate: The display responds to how you hold the tablet, changing orientation when you turn it. Samsung’s Quick settings control uses a device-and-arrows icon, though its appearance can vary by software version.
- Portrait: Keeps the screen upright instead of changing orientation when you turn the tablet.
- Landscape: Keeps the screen sideways instead of changing orientation when you turn the tablet.
Samsung describes the controls as a way to rotate freely or lock the screen in one position. A compatible app may still use a particular orientation as designed, even when the tablet is locked. Samsung US Support: Turn your Galaxy phone or tablet’s screen rotation on or off.
How to lock the tablet in portrait or landscape
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick settings. Samsung’s current US instructions describe swiping from the top right; the gesture and panel layout may differ by model or software version.
- Find the screen-rotation control. If it says Portrait or Landscape, tap it to switch to Auto rotate. If it is missing, open the panel’s Edit control and add the rotation button back.
- With Auto rotate on, hold the tablet upright for portrait or sideways for landscape, and wait for the display to turn.
- Open Quick settings again and tap Auto rotate. The control changes to Portrait or Landscape, matching the tablet’s current position, and locks that orientation.
- To change the lock or resume automatic rotation, tap the control and select or use Auto rotate again.

Why the screen may not rotate
The app or screen does not support that orientation
Some apps open in, or support only, a particular orientation. A tablet’s rotation setting cannot make an app display in a mode the app does not support. Some screens also do not support every position, such as turning the device upside down. Samsung’s rotation guidance describes these limits.

Auto rotate is off
Check the Quick settings control. If it reads Portrait or Landscape, the screen is locked; tap it to enable Auto rotate before turning the tablet.
The sensor or software may need attention
Samsung says the tablet uses an internal accelerometer to determine how it is being held. If rotation still fails in an app that supports both orientations, check that Auto rotate is on, install available software updates, and restart the tablet. If the issue persists, Samsung advises checking for physical damage; these checks do not guarantee that every fault can be resolved without service. A temporary way to keep the current view
Samsung says that with Auto rotate enabled, keeping a finger on the screen while turning the tablet temporarily preserves the original orientation. Release your finger to allow rotation. Samsung gives reading a PDF or document as an example. Samsung US Support.
