New Zealand authorities have recalled several rangoli powder and coloured-sand products after asbestos was detected in some tested samples. The Ministry of Education says listed products should no longer be used, while WorkSafe directs workplaces dealing with opened or used sand to isolate the area and contact licensed asbestos professionals. The available official information does not establish which product was at the Auckland centre, whether anyone was exposed, or when the centre reopened.
What is confirmed—and what is not
The product recalls are confirmed; the centre-specific details are not established in the official information available. A Reddit search result dated 1 October 2026 reported that a Ponsonby early learning service had closed over rangoli-powder asbestos fears, but the post could not be opened and no centre or regulator statement or reliable report verified the circumstances.
There is no confirmed product identity, incident date, exposure assessment, list of affected rooms, or reopening status. The recall notices do not show that a product was used at this centre, and the fact that some samples tested positive does not establish that every batch or colour was contaminated. No confirmed exposure or health effect at the centre is documented in the cited official material.
Which rangoli products were recalled?
New Zealand’s Ministry of Education Early Learning Bulletin, Issue 164, dated 3 September 2026, points to MBIE recall notices and says laboratory testing detected asbestos in some samples. The two notices identify these products:

The Ministry’s Early Learning Bulletin, Issue 164, says to stop using listed products, store them securely, and dispose of them safely. Check the recall records and official guidance rather than assuming an unlisted product is safe or that a centre used a named product.
What an early learning facility should do with suspected recalled sand
WorkSafe New Zealand says recalled coloured sand should be managed as presumed friable asbestos until further notice. Its instructions distinguish a sealed container from sand that has been opened or used.
If the container is sealed
Move it to a secure place away from people. Do not open or use it. Follow the Ministry’s stop-use and safe-disposal guidance for listed products.
If the sand has been opened or used
- Have people leave the area for a sand-free, well-ventilated place.
- Prevent access to the affected area.
- Do not try to clean up the sand.
- Promptly contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist. WorkSafe says the area should not be re-entered until contamination is understood and appropriate clearance has been obtained.
- Notify the Ministry of Education and advise what action the facility took.
WorkSafe says its current approach, based on testing to date, requires Class A removal followed by a Class A clearance inspection. These are workplace instructions, not a general household cleanup procedure. What the preliminary play-simulation study can—and cannot—tell families
An Australian government agency’s 2 July 2026 summary of preliminary Auckland University of Technology (AUT) research described tests on 15 samples: 10 craft-sand samples, four asbestos-confirmed moulding-sand samples, and one control. Airborne fibres were detected during simulated play and cleanup for nine of the 10 craft-sand samples. None were detected for the four moulding-sand samples or the control during the simulated play described.
Those results are not an estimate of exposure or health risk at the Auckland centre. They do not show what product, if any, was present there, what conditions people encountered, or whether anyone inhaled fibres. The Australian agency said the study had not yet been peer reviewed or published as of its 2 July 2026 summary and cautioned that conclusions about health implications were limited. The moulding-sand result also does not establish safety: those samples had been confirmed to contain asbestos before testing.

MBIE’s Pavitrom notice quotes Health New Zealand advice that asbestos-related conditions typically develop over 15 to 40 years; the notice says risk depends on asbestos type and quantity and duration of exposure. That general time range cannot predict an individual’s outcome. No centre-specific exposure statistic or health-outcome figure is provided by the cited sources.
