The right AT&T Prepaid plan depends on how much high-speed data and hotspot access you need, how you want to pay, and whether you need international service. AT&T’s current offers include a $20-per-month equivalent plan that requires $240 upfront for 12 months, plus monthly options advertised at $25 and $35. Those figures come with different data thresholds and eligibility terms, so compare the full terms—not just the word “unlimited.”
Compare the current AT&T Prepaid phone offers
The prices and features below are advertised by AT&T, not the result of independent speed testing. AT&T says service is subject to its network management policies and that congestion may cause temporary slowdowns. Taxes, fees, eligibility, and other restrictions can also affect the cost or availability of an offer. Check the current AT&T Prepaid plans page before enrolling.
| Offer | Payment and eligibility | Data and slowdown | Hotspot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-month unlimited offer | $240 upfront for 12 months, equivalent to $20 per month. AT&T lists online activation of a new single line and a SIM or phone purchase as requirements; taxes, fees, terms, and restrictions apply. | After 16GB, speeds are reduced to a maximum of 1.5Mbps. | 10GB included. |
| Monthly unlimited offer | $25 per month. AT&T displays it as an online-only offer for a new single line; taxes and fees are extra. | 30GB per month at a maximum of 3Mbps, then speeds are slowed to a maximum of 1.5Mbps. | Not stated in the cited plan offer. |
| Unlimited Saver | $35 per month for a single line; taxes and fees are extra. | 30GB per month at a maximum of 3Mbps, then speeds are slowed to a maximum of 1.5Mbps. | Not stated in the cited plan offer. |
| 5GB hotspot add-on | $10 per month plus taxes; AT&T says it can be added through the prepaid account. | Hotspot data add-on, not a separate phone plan. | 5GB add-on. |
“Unlimited” does not mean unlimited data at the advertised higher speed: the plan details specify thresholds and a maximum speed after those thresholds. The $20 figure is a monthly equivalent, not a month-to-month charge.
How to choose a plan for your usage
1. Match the data terms to your everyday use
Review several billing cycles of phone usage, including video, navigation, uploads, and any activity that regularly runs over cellular data. Then compare your typical use with each offer’s stated threshold and post-threshold maximum. The annual offer lists a slowdown after 16GB; the $25 and $35 monthly options list 30GB at up to 3Mbps before a maximum of 1.5Mbps. These are advertised plan terms, not a guarantee of the speed you will experience; congestion may cause temporary slowdowns under AT&T’s network management policies.

2. Treat hotspot data as its own requirement
If you tether a laptop or tablet, estimate that use separately from phone data. The annual offer lists 10GB of hotspot data, and AT&T advertises a separate 5GB add-on for $10 per month plus tax. The cited offer details do not state a hotspot allowance for the $25 and $35 options, so check the current plan terms rather than assuming it is included.
3. Compare the cash commitment, not only the monthly equivalent
The annual offer costs $240 upfront for 12 months. Its $20 monthly equivalent is useful for comparing over a year, but it requires paying for the full term at enrollment and is tied to new-line activation conditions. The monthly offers avoid that particular 12-month prepayment. Compare the amount due at signup, taxes and fees, and the offer’s eligibility rules against the way you prefer to budget.

4. Check which international use you actually need
Separate calling or texting from the United States from using your phone while traveling. AT&T says select plans include unlimited texts from the U.S. to more than 230 countries and territories, while certain plans include unlimited talk, text, and data in and between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Features depend on the plan and destination; see AT&T’s Prepaid international calling and travel details before relying on coverage.
International calling and travel: what to verify
AT&T describes an International Travel Add-On that provides seven days of unlimited talk and text plus 5GB of data in select countries for $35. The seven-day period begins when the add-on is added, and AT&T advises customers to buy it on arrival. Confirm that your destination is included and check the current terms before travel; the offer is not a blanket statement of coverage in every country.

Using your existing phone and activating service
Bringing your own phone can avoid buying a handset, but AT&T requires a compatible unlocked device. The carrier says most unlocked iPhone 6 and newer models work with AT&T Prepaid; that statement does not establish compatibility for every device or model variant. Verify your exact phone using AT&T’s Bring Your Own Device and eSIM information.
- Supported eSIM devices may activate without a physical SIM; eSIM is not available for every device.
- For a compatible phone using a physical SIM, AT&T says you need an AT&T Prepaid SIM card and plan.
Data-only options are for tablets and hotspots, not phone lines
AT&T also lists prepaid data-only options for tablets and mobile hotspots. These are a separate use case from a prepaid phone line, and AT&T says international data use is unavailable on these prepaid data plans. The listed options are:
| Data-only allowance | Listed price and payment term |
|---|---|
| 15GB | $35 monthly. |
| 20GB | $25 monthly with a $300 12-month prepayment. |
| 50GB | $55 monthly. |
| 100GB | $90 monthly. |
These figures come from AT&T’s prepaid tablet and mobile-hotspot data plan information. Check the current terms and device eligibility before choosing one.
