AutoPay is usually the better fit if you want renewals handled automatically or your eligible unlimited plan qualifies for a discount; manual payment is better if you want to authorize every renewal yourself and can reliably pay on time. AT&T processes AutoPay before the renewal deadline, so it is not a way to wait until the due date to decide whether to renew. Check the discount and payment options for your specific account before choosing.
How AutoPay and manual payment differ
| Factor | AutoPay | Manual payment |
|---|---|---|
| When payment happens | AT&T says it charges one day before the monthly due date, or one day before a non-monthly plan balance expires. AT&T PREPAID support (last updated March 18, 2026). | You submit payment when it is due to keep service, according to AT&T’s PREPAID support guidance. |
| Effort | After enrollment, renewal is charged automatically using the payment method on file. | You must remember to make each payment by the renewal deadline. |
| Discount | AT&T advertises up to $15 off per month for unlimited plans. The amount and eligibility depend on the current plan and account terms. | The support guidance does not state that manual payments receive the AutoPay discount. |
| Control over each renewal | Less need to act each month, but you should review the payment method and upcoming charge before renewal. | You initiate each payment, giving you a direct decision point before paying. |
| Risk of a missed renewal | Payment is automatic, but a failed charge or outdated payment method can still require attention. | If you miss the due date, AT&T warns that service can be turned off. |
When AutoPay is the better choice
Choose AutoPay if convenience and avoiding a forgotten renewal matter more to you than submitting every payment yourself. It is also worth considering if you have an unlimited plan: AT&T’s support page says customers can get “up to $15 off per month” with AutoPay, but does not establish the exact discount for every currently offered PREPAID plan. Confirm the amount shown for your plan or account rather than budgeting for the maximum.
AT&T says the recurring charge covers the plan and any auto-renewing add-ons, plus taxes and fees. Before enrolling, make sure the payment method on file is current and that you are comfortable with that charge being made ahead of the renewal date.
When manual payment is the better choice
Manual payment suits you if you want to submit each renewal yourself and can reliably pay by the deadline. It gives you a moment to decide whether to make the next payment, but it also makes keeping service your responsibility: AT&T says you need to pay when due if you do not use AutoPay. If the payment is missed, service may be turned off; AT&T says an unpaid PREPAID number may be reassigned after 60 days.
